1-Principlesforusingawordprocessor
(AA4.2.1)CandidateswithaccesstowordprocessorsatHeartofEnglandareallowedto
dosoinordertoremovebarriersfordisabledcandidates,whichpreventthemfrom
beingplacedatasubstantialdisadvantageasaconsequenceofpersistentandsignificant
difficulties.Theuseofwordprocessorsisonlypermittedwhilstensuringthatthe
integrityoftheassessmentismaintained,atthesametimeasprovidingaccessto
assessmentsforadisabledcandidate.
(AA4.2.2)TheuseofawordprocessoratHeartofEnglandisnotgrantedwhereitwill
compromisetheassessmentobjectivesofthespecificationinquestion.
(AA4.2.3)CandidatesatHeartofEnglandmaynotrequiretheuseofawordprocessor
ineachspecification.Assubjectsandtheirmethodsofassessmentsmayvary,leadingto
differentdemandsofourcandidates,theneedfortheuseofawordprocessoris
consideredonasubject-by-subjectbasis.
(AA4.2.4)TheuseofawordprocessoratHeartofEnglandisagreed/processedatthe
startofthecourse.Candidatesaresubsequentlyawarethattheywillhavetheuseofa
wordprocessorforexaminationsandcontrolledassessments/courseworkforapproved
subjects.
(AA4.2.5)TheuseofawordprocessorforcandidatesatHeartofEnglandisonlygranted
ifitreflectsthesupportgiventothecandidateastheir'normalwayofworking',whichis
definedassupport:intheclassroom;orworkinginsmallgroupsforreadingand/or
writing;orliteracysupportlessons;orliteracyinterventionstrategies;and/orininternal
schooltestsandmockexaminations
2-Theuseofawordprocessor
(AA5.8.1)HeartofEnglandprovidesawordprocessorwiththespellingandgrammar
checkfacility/predictivetextdisabled(switchedoff).
(AA5.8.1)HeartofEnglandonlygrantstheuseofawordprocessortoacandidate
whereitistheirnormalwayofworking(see4.2.5above)withinthecentre.
(AA5.8.1)HeartofEnglandonlygrantstheuseofawordprocessortoacandidateifitis
appropriatetotheirneeds.(Forexample,thequalityoflanguagesignificantlyimproves
asaresultofusingawordprocessorduetoproblemswithplanningandorganisation
whenwritingbyhand).
(AA5.8.3)HeartofEnglandallowcandidatestouseawordprocessorinanexamination
totypecertainquestions,i.e.thoserequiringextendedwriting,andhandwriteshorter
answers.HeartofEnglandarealsoawarethatexaminationswhichhaveasignificant
amountofwriting,aswellasthosethatplaceagreaterdemandontheneedtoorganise

thoughtandplanextendedanswers,arethosewherecandidateswillfrequentlyneedto
type.Examinationswhichrequiremoresimplisticanswersareofteneasiertohandwrite
withintheanswerbooklet.Thecandidateavoidsthedifficultyofvisuallytracking
betweenthequestionpaperandscreen.
(AA5.8.4)Inallcases,HeartofEnglandensuresthatawordprocessorcoversheet(Form
4)iscompletedandattachedtoeachcandidate'stypedscript.
(AA5.8.4)HeartofEnglanddoesnotsimplygranttheuseofawordprocessortoa
candidatebecausehe/shepreferstotyperatherthanwriteorcanworkfasterona
keyboard,orbecausehe/sheusesalaptopathome.
3-WordProcessorandtheirprogrammes

AtHeartofEnglandwordprocessorsare:
• Usedasatype-writer,notasadatabase,althoughstandardformattingsoftware
isacceptable.
• Havebeenclearedofanypreviouslystoreddata,asmustanyportablestorage
mediumused.Anunauthorisedmemorystickisnotpermittedforusebya
candidate.Whererequired,candidatesareprovidedwithamemorystick,which
hasbeenclearedofanypreviouslystoreddata,byanominatedmemberof
centrestaff.
• Areingoodworkingorderatthetimeoftheexamination.
• Areaccommodatedinsuchawaythatothercandidatesarenotdisturbedand
cannotreadthescreen.
• Ifaccommodatedseparately,aseparateinvigilatorisused.
• Usedtoproducescriptsundersecureconditions,andiftheyarenotthenHeart
ofEnglandareawarethattheymayberefusedbytheawardingbody.
• Arenotusedtoperformskillswhicharebeingassessed.
• Arenotconnectedtoanintranetoranyothermeansofcommunication.
• arenotusedonthecandidate'sbehalfbyathirdpartyunlessthecandidatehas
permissiontouseascribe
• AtHeartofEngland:
• Documentsareprintedaftertheexaminationisover.
• Candidatesarepresenttoverifythattheworkprintedistheirown.
• Wordprocessedscriptsareattachedtoanyanswerbookletwhichcontainssome
oftheanswers.
• Candidatesarenotgivenaccesstootherapplicationssuchasacalculator(where
prohibitedintheexamination),spreadsheetsetcwhenusingawordprocessor.
• Graphicpackagesorcomputeraideddesignsoftwareisnotincludedonaword
processorunlesspermissionhasbeengiventousethese.
• Predictivetextsoftwareoranautomaticspellingandgrammarcheckisdisabled
unlessthecandidatehasbeenpermittedascribeorisusingvoicerecognition
technology(thescriptmusthaveascribecoversheetattached),ortheawarding
body'sspecificationpermitstheuseofautomaticspellchecking.

(ICE8.8)AtHeartofEngland
• CandidatesusingaWordProcessorforexaminationsaresentinstructionsvia
emailonceapprovalisgranted.
• CandidatesusingWordpadsoftware(whichdoesnotallowfortheinsertionofa
headerorfooter)areinstructedtohandwritetheirdetailsasaheaderorfooter
oncetheyhavefinishedtheexaminationandprintedofftheirtypedscript.They
arealsosupervisedtoensurethattheyaresolelyperformingthistaskandnotrereadingtheiranswersoramendingtheirworkinanyway.
• Eachpageisappropriatelynumberedbythecandidate.
• Candidatesareprovidedwithatemplatewhichusesminimum12ptfontand
doublespacing.
• Candidatesgrantedtheuseofawordprocessorarepresentattheendofthe
examinationwhentheirscriptisprintedoffsotheycanverifythatthework
printedoffistheirown.
• Wherepossibleexaminationlaptopswillbeprovidedinthemainexamination
hall.
