SECURITY INSTRUCTIONS FOR DORMITORIES RESIDENTS
Following is a list of security guidelines in light of lessons learnt from disasters that have
happened in the country over the last few years. A bit of attention will prevent most accidents.
These guidelines do not replace the College’s procedures or legal regulations.
GENERAL

Report immediately to the dormitories office or the college security center, after business
hours to Tel. 921, on any public safety hazard (broken banister, hole in the sidewalk,
flooding, broken outside lighting, danger of electrocution) and emergency events (fire,
injury, etc.).

Remember that glass doors are hazardous to impact, verify that a red sticker is on the
door, know that a sash window requires extra caution, and take care not to slip in the
shower.
FIRE

Do not bring into the apartments flammable materials like: fuel, turpentine, paint,
thinners, rags, clutter, and explosives (for example, an electric oven or match placed near
thinner is certain to result in fire).

Smoking in the dormitories is forbidden except in a separate room in which student
smokers live that does not disturb the other residents in the apartment.
Be sure to extinguish cigarettes and don’t throw cigarette butts from the window. Also,
computer papers next to a cigarette = fire, so please take care.

Verify the location and operability of fire extinguishing equipment.
HOW TO ACT IN THE EVENT OF A FIRE
-
Discovered a fire? Immediately alert the fire department – Tel. 102. Do not hesitate and
do not allow the fire to spread. Find the source and try to extinguish it at its source.
-
Do not spray water on electrical devices! First disconnect them from the power.
8
-
Should a cooking fire break out in a frying pan of boiling oil, do not pour water on it!
Cover the pan or pot with a wet rag. Take care not to overturn the vessel and cause a fire
or scalding.
-
If you live on the ground floor and cannot overcome the fire, escape immediately from the
dwelling. Do not delay to save items of value, your life is worth more!!!
-
In case fire erupts in the stairwell, the smoke will reach your apartment’s entrance much
sooner than the fire. Do not open the door in any case, approach the door and touch by
hand, if it’s hot do not exit! Prevent the fire and smoke from bursting into your apartment,
seal the open cracks around the door with a wet towel or blanket. In case of need, cover
nose and mouth with a wet wash cloth, go to a window and inhale fresh air.
-
Smoke penetrating an enclosed space is most dangerous! During movement or passage in
a smoke filled space, bend over or even crawl on the floor to a place of fresh air.
-
Get to the window and call for help, scream and wave a white or colorful sheet, and wait
for the rescue team.
-
Under any circumstances, descent via the smoke filled stairwell is forbidden as is the use
of the elevator!
-
Verify location of exits and escape routes. Keep access and escape routes uncluttered.
-
Don’t return to a burning or smoke filled home.
ELECTRICITY
-
Check monthly the workability of the apartment’s automatic circuit breaker.
-
Only use electronic instruments and accessories that are in good working order.
-
Do not fix or change the apartment’s electrical system or electrical devices. You should
order a licensed electrician via the college for care of all electrical problems.
-
Do not connect high energy consumption devices (such as: ovens, air conditioners) to
prevent overload which will cause overheating of electrical wires and fire. Do not insert
an unstable multi plug outlet to the wall socket.
-
Electrical plugs - ensure that plugs are properly inserted and surfaces intact.
-
Electric cooking pot – do not leave it unattended when in use. In general, never leave an
open flame unattended.
9
-
Water and electricity do not go together. Use electrical devices with dry hands while
wearing sandals or flip flops, do not bring electrical equipment into the shower.
-
Heating of the dormitory rooms is by use of convection heaters/air conditioners.
Do not use any space heaters and especially coil heaters. In any exceptional use of a
heater that’s not a coil heater (due to heating problems) do not operate the heater
unattended. Remember that using a heater (or electric blanket) left on while asleep is
liable to cause a short circuit and anything plugged into the socket or operated by a
breaker is liable to result in disaster.
-
Turn off electrical devices and lighting when leaving the room.
-
Never ever touch an electrocuted person (because the person touching is also liable to be
electrocuted) but immediately disconnect the electrical current and move the injured via
an insulated object such as a wooden bar.
-
It’s advisable to take part in safety instruction on the topic of fire fighting and first aid as
announced on the bulletin boards.
