Phoenix Area Placements - School of Social Work

CHILD WELFARE SPECIALIZATION
APPROVED FIELD PLACEMENTS
Note: To complete the Child Welfare Specialization Program, students must complete one field
placement in a private agency while the other field placement is performed in a public agency.
Stipend students perform their public placement at a Child Welfare Education Unit near Phoenix,
or Tucson. Other specialization students are also welcome to use these training units as a public
field placement. To complete a field placement not listed here, follow the directions under the
policy governing the approval of Child Welfare Specialization Field Placements located at the
conclusion of this list.
*The field office is always adding and subtracting possible placements so please refer to the IPT
system to confirm that the agency on this list is still actively partnering with the ASU School of
Social Work Field Office.

POLICY FOR APPROVAL OF FIELD PLACEMENTS
IN THE CHILD WELFARE SPECIALIZATION
1. The general guidelines that are applicable to all MSW students as outlined by the Field
Education Office apply to Specialization students.
2. An approved placement is one in which the student's client base consists primarily of children
and their families.
3. Students in the Specialization must have one placement experience in a private setting and
one in a public setting. A public placement is one which is administered by a governmental
agency or which receives the majority of its funding from public sources (municipal, state, or
federal) .In rare special circumstances, a waiver of the public/private requirement may be granted
with the PRIOR approval of Dr. Christina Risley-Curtiss, Co-Director of the Child Welfare
Training Project. It is ultimately the student's responsibility to ensure that he or she fulfills the
public/private requirement.
4. Stipend students must fulfill their public placement requirement by working in one of the
three ASU Child Welfare Training Units.
5. In general, a school placement is considered a public setting.
6. If placed in a counseling agency, the student should primarily (at least 80%) be serving
children and their families, not adult individuals. A similar rule governs hospital-based
placements.
7. PAC students in the Child Welfare Specialization arrange their second-year field placements
through the PAC Committee. The placement must have a child welfare focus. The public/private
requirement applies for PAC students also.
8. The student must be supervised by an ASU approved MSW supervisor.
9. Work variances must be approved by the Field Office and Dr. Christina Risley-Curtiss.
10. Summer Block students will need a Curriculum Variance for the two semesters preceding
their summer block. (This means that the student will not take field the academic year before the
summer block.) It is the student's responsibility to notify the Field Office and request a
Curriculum Variance.
