Matt Captain is a self-assured 13 year-old who plays on his school’s basketball team; the team went to state last year! He also had the lead role in his school’s play, requiring that he read and memorize lots of lines. He feels good that he can read the script over and over and learn the lines, and do well in the play. This sense of capability and accomplishment is critically important in Matt’s view of what his future might hold. wrong order. When he’d write a sentence, he’d put whole words in the wrong order.” It wasn’t just letters that got jumbled. “When we’d cook together, he’d reverse things in the recipe that didn’t make sense, like, ‘cook for 30 - 25 minutes.’ Matt Captain Reading Center Student is confident in his future Matt’s self-confidence was not as strong a few years ago. Reading did not “come naturally” for Matt. He didn’t like it and avoided it. His mother, Kim Captain noticed that something was different about the way Matt processed auditory and written information, and despite regular discussions with her pediatrician, she didn’t have an answer. “When I researched dyslexia, Matt didn’t have what seemed to be “typical” dyslexic traits. But I knew something wasn’t right. When he’d spell a simple, three letter word, he’d get all three letters right, but he’d put them in the Furthermore, he simply did not want to read. He could read some words, but not sentences. Matt had little confidence with reading and would avoid it whenever possible. That’s when his parents brought him to the Reading Center. “I didn’t like reading. I didn’t like long chapter books,” recalled Matt. His mom and dad consciously did lots of reading in front of Matt and his brother Christopher, in order to model reading. But Matt preferred to be read to rather than to read himself. Matt was placed with Master Teacher and tutor, Dorothy Peterson (Miss Dorothy to Matt), and things began to change. “Matt would ask wonderful, thought-provoking questions about (continued on page 4) Philip Schultz Comes to The Reading Center Keynote Speaker at 60th Anniversary Celebration Denise Walser-Kolar Joyce Washechek The Reading Center was honored to welcome Philip Schultz to help celebrate the Reading Center’s 60th Anniversary at the Rochester International Event Center on November 16, 2011. Mr. Schultz recently released his memoir entitled, My Dyslexia, that explores his experience growing up and living with undiagnosed dyslexia. Jill Weirick Barbara Zelinske Philip Schultz learned about his dyslexia when his own son was diagnosed in the 2nd grade, and he experienced what many parents have: the list of his son’s symptoms mirrored his own. As a prize-winning poet, Mr. Schultz had not considered writing about dyslexia until he was approached by an editor whose son was dyslexic. Pulitzer Prize winning poet, Philip Schultz, speaks at 60th “Writing about my dyslexia was a painful subject. I hadn’t had to deal with it myself for many years, since I finished school,” recounted Mr. Schultz in his address to the 600 assembled. Philip was kicked out of school twice for fighting back against bullies who tormented him because he was placed in the “Dummy Class.” (continued on page 4) From the Executive Director’s Desk Greetings from the Chair It is truly an honor to have been asked to be the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Reading Center. Now that we have held a very successful 60th Anniversary celebration for the Reading Center, one’s mind tends toward the question, “What about the next 60 years?” Those who know about non-profit Boards will be glad to know that we typically refresh our Strategic Plan every two years. This gives us a clear direction that is revisited often enough to stay relevant and allows us to be nimble enough to meet newly emerging issues. The Reading Center Board of Directors and Staff will be updating our Strategic Plan this winter. Following in the footsteps of Dr. Terri Edwards is a hard act to follow. Terri has done a fantastic job of leading the Reading Center. The Reading Center is very blessed to have such Rick Haeflinger a dedicated staff and tutors. Chair, Board of Directors During the past two years that I have been on the Board, I have truly been inspired by the commitment of the staff and tutors to the mission of the Reading Center. We will be partnering with the International Dyslexia Association - Upper Midwest Branch to train our presenters in the skills needed to offer webinars. Our goal will be to offer our staff’s expert content but re-tool it in order to offer workshops via webinar. In this way, people who are outside of the Southeastern Minnesota area will be able to participate more easily. I am writing this the day after our 60th Anniversary Celebration and am still feeling the excitement of the event. It was inspiring to see the amount of community It was inspiring support and the number of to see...the number lives that have been touched of lives that have by the Reading Center. Philip been touched by Shultz was a fabulous keynote speaker. The question/answer The Reading Center. session after the event with Jean Osman and Phillip Shultz was well attended and enjoyed by all. I have received and heard only positive comments on how well the event was put together and the impact of the speakers. While the Reading Center has delved into online tutoring in the recent past, the online tools that worked best for Orton-Gillingham tutoring were eliminated. We have been exploring our newest options, and we have identified a new online tool that will enable us to expand our online tutoring capabilities. Once again, the benefit will be to expand the area in which our tutors are able to serve. Greater reach means that more children who need our specialized services will have access. One final change comes in the area of the label that we use for our tutors. The formal title we use is “Educational Therapist” (most people shorten that to “tutor”). Regardless of common usage, the formal name grew out of definitions that were developed by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA). Over the years, the definitions have evolved. We now recognize that the IDA approved title, “Academic Language Therapist,” is more in keeping with the skills offered by Reading Center tutors. Therefore, beginning in January, 2012, the Reading Center will change our terminology to stay in alignment with the IDA. The committee for the event, Sharon Rome, Chair, Dr. Terri Edwards and Cindy Russell, along with the support of Denise Walser-Kolar did a fantastic job of pulling this evening together. Thank you to all who helped before, during and after the event, the sponsors of the event, those who attended and those who support the Reading Center. Everybody’s involvement made the night truly special. Seeing the history of the Reading Center and how it has developed over the past 60 years is amazing. (If you haven’t seen them already, I encourage you to see the two films produced for the event on our website.) I see the Reading Center’s impact on the Rochester community growing to the state of Minnesota, and beyond. The demand for programs provided by the Reading Center is increasing. It truly is an exciting time to be involved, especially considering the dedicated staff, tutors and Board of Directors. I have no doubt that the Reading Center will continue to rise to meet the issues of a small not-for-profit organization, as it continues to grow. The future is bright and I am eager to see what is ahead. Nothing will change with the high quality of OrtonGillingham tutoring that our tutors provide to students. We will continue to be a source for the best quality OrtonGillingham tutoring available, and we are still one of the only centers west of the Mississippi that is accredited by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators. Only the formal title of our tutors will change in 2012. We embrace the next 60 years of the Reading Center with anticipation. We are exceedingly grateful for your strong support of the Reading Center’s mission and will strive to earn that continued support in the 60 years to come! Have a great holiday season with your families and friends, Rick Haeflinger Chair, Reading Center Board of Directors 2 Cindy Russell Executive Director Why Think About Summer Now? It’s not too early to plan your child’s summer boost. During the long, cold winter, it is often encouraging to think about the warm, sunny days of summer. But there is another reason to think about summer now – the Reading Center’s Best of Basics summer program for grades K -12! The summer program is named Best of Basics for a good reason. The goal is to use the best tools to lay a basic foundation for lifelong abilities in reading, spelling, math, and study skills. Best of Basics provides classes especially designed for individual learning styles and capabilities. These classes allow your child to review and reinforce vital, foundational learning skills to avoid the “summer slide” and actually give your child a boost before school resumes in the fall. The Orton-Gillingham multisensory teaching approach that is applied to all of our programs has proven exceptionally effective for students of all ages. Be sure to plan ahead and mark your calendars now for Best of Basics, July 9 – August 3, 2012! Leave a legacy of effective education. Include The Reading Center in your will. Meet New Member of The Reading Center Board of Directors Kathlene Domaille joins as Treasurer Katie Domaille joined the Reading Center’s Board of Directors in the fall of 2011, serving as the Treasurer of the organization. She came to join the Board when her co-worker at Mayo in Treasury Services, Rick Haeflinger asked her if she knew of anyone who would be interested in serving on the Reading Center’s Board. “I answered, ‘Yes I do – me!’” We are very grateful that Katie is lending her leadership and expertise to the Reading Center. Katie grew up in LeRoy, MN and moved to Rochester to attend college, and she never left! She and her husband of 23 years, Tim, live on 2 acres where they have 2 dogs and enjoy many outdoor activities. She is training one of her dogs to be a therapy dog that will work with children. Katie and Tim also stay active with their 8 nieces and nephews who range in ages from 38 to 3. Kathlene Domaille Reading Center Board of Directors New Board Members are asked to participate in our experiential workshop, “Walk in the Shoes. . . A Dyslexia Simulation.” Katie felt the simulation was very challenging. “I enjoyed the various stations . . . as it gave me a good understanding of how learning disorders can affect a child who is struggling to learn. Not only did I realize how difficult it must be at times for the dyslexic, I also became more aware of how difficult it can be for the teacher to adapt their style of teaching to accommodate many variations of the learning mind. I would recommend this event to everyone. . . . your views of the educational systems will change forever.” 3 Reading Center Receives Top Marks Loyal donors again make the Reading Center the favorite non-profit in Rochester For the second year in a row, The Reading Center received the greatest number of donors, and greatest dollar amounts donated for a Rochester non-profit on Give to the Max Day. Thank you for supporting the Reading Center! This year, Give to the Max Day fell on the very day that we celebrated our 60th Anniversary, November 16th. We maximized this synergy by offering online donation computers at the Rochester International Event Center for guests at the 60th Anniversary Celebration to make Give to the Max Day donations. The Rochester Scottish Rite Children’s Foundation stepped up to offer matching gifts for donors through the online site on Nov. 16th. The entire amount of the match was utilized! Thank you for helping us set new records this year, but especially, thank you for helping us make a difference for children. Our supporters are instrumental in making Reading Center programs and scholarships for students possible. Because of you, the Reading Center is able to change lives, one lesson at a time. Thank you! Philip Schultz story - continued from page 1 Matt Captain story - continued from page 1 “It never occurred to me that the teacher should not have taught with her back to us, the ‘dummies,’ but it was painful to be regarded as unable to learn. One memorable situation occurred in school when his teacher placed a book in his hand and asked him to “pretend to read” because the principal was going to visit the class. words. ‘Where does this word come from?’” recalls Dorothy. Mr. Schultz eventually taught himself to read at age 11, with the help of his mother and the use of graphic novels and comic books. The method he used involved willing himself to take on the identity of another person, a character that he invented who COULD read. This method is the kernel of his approach to teaching writing. This year, the writing school that he founded called the Writers Studio, turns 25. The inspiring transformation of a boy who could not read, into a man who makes his life from writing words, was impactful to the Reading Center audience. She remembers that Matt’s parents were always very up-front about dyslexia with Matt, instead of hiding it or feeling ashamed of it. “They explained matter-of-factly that your brain works differently.” This helped Matt accept himself and learn the way that worked best for him. Dorothy also noticed that Matt’s parents made his tutoring sessions a priority. They rarely missed. “Consistent attendance is so important in order for a child to progress.” And progress he did! After a year and a half tutoring with Ms. Peterson, his standardized test scores soared. His spelling as a 4th grader went from the 2nd grade level to the 6th grade level. His comprehension went up 2 ½ grade levels and his letter blending went up an astounding 7 grade levels! Now, Matt LIKES to read, especially books that interest him: Ted Decker books, Hunger Games, Christopher Paoli books. “It is a lot easier to read longer books. And I’m a pretty good speller because of the prefixes, roots and suffixes that Miss Dorothy taught me.” “When I grow up I want to be an orthodontist or a doctor. I want to be able to make a comfortable living.” Back when Matt was unable to read and spell, that was less of a surety. But now that he has the skills he needs to do well in school, all signs are positive that Matt will do whatever he puts his heart to. “I can do anything I want.” His family attributes this to the strong foundation he received from the Reading Center. “It’s a beautiful thing to see, when he wants to sit and read a book all afternoon. My only wish is that we would have brought him for help sooner,” reflected Kim. Kim sees their commitment to Reading Center tutoring as an investment of time and dollars. “Parents spend so much time and money in private lessons and sports. But reading is integral to school and life. You have to read throughout your whole life. You aren’t going to be playing football at age 35!” Philip Schultz signing copies of his memoir at The Reading Center If you would like a signed copy of Philip Schultz’s memoir, My Dyslexia, The Reading Center has copies available for $22 each. Contact Barb Arens at [email protected] or call 507-288-5271. To learn more about the Writers Studio, visit www.writerstudio.com. The entire Captain family values the help that Matt received at the Reading Center. As was their custom, their family was deciding where to send their charitable dollars. Matt’s older brother Christopher suggested giving to the Reading Center because he could see the huge difference it made in Matt’s life. Matt agreed so the Captains made a Bright Futures Campaign donation, to provide scholarship funds for kids whose families cannot afford tutoring. What a vote of confidence! Matt’s advice for other young people who may be struggling is to, “Keep at it. Don’t be embarrassed if you need extra help. Everyone might need help at something, it is just a stepping stone.” For Matt, tutoring at the Reading Center was his stepping stone to a future wide open to his potential. 4 Former student, Matt Captain, aims for a shot during State Championships Reading Center 60th Anniversary Celebration 600 Friends of the Reading Center, Old and New, Joined the Party The Reading Center hosted 600 friends at the Rochester International Event Center on November 16th to celebrate our 60th Anniversary. 60th Anniversary Event Chair, Sharon Rome and Reading Center Past President, Terri Edwards, were instrumental in creating an evening that was acclaimed as a resounding success. $67,000 was raised to support the mission of The Reading Center.
