Caterpillar Scale Truck...
Performance Analysis Team and Job Studies
Production analysis and jobsite assessments
are a service that Caterpillar provides to our
customers. This enables our customers to
improve their operations and achieve more
from their investment.
These job studies typically require two days
onsite plus a couple of additional days for
report writing. Our teams focus on a number
of variables and analyses such as:
•
•
•
•
•
Vehicle/fleet productivity
Loading/hauling systems
Equipment operation reviews
Loading tool sizing/matching
Payload weighing/productivity
What can be measured?
• Truck Payload Measurement System (TPMS) verification/calibration
• Fleet Production Cost Analysis (FPC) data collection Production differences for specific machines
2
•
Belt scale checks
What can you expect when we visit
your jobsite?
Our team will perform machine production
studies on your specific pieces of equipment
to prove a production advantage for Cat
products. A general rule of thumb is that a 1%
production advantage will offset a 5% increase
in price. Also, production differences have to
be at least an increment of 10% to be visible
to the human eye. Our team can measure to
+- 1% accuracy.
How does Caterpillar do the job studies?
Our team arrives at your jobsite and sets up
the scales to weigh and gather cycle times.
Anything that digs, loads, hauls weight
or volume over a measured distance in a
specified amount of time can be studied.
Performance analysis is a service that we
provide to help improve operations and
get more from your investment.
How many teams
do we have?
The Edwards (Peoria, IL)
based team visits states just
west of the Mississippi River
and the remainder of the
Eastern United States and
Eastern Canada. The Tinaja
Hills (Green Valley, AZ) based
team visits customers in the
remainder of the Western
United States and Western
Canada. We also have a
Malaga (Spain) based team
that supports all of Europe.

Scomat and Caterpillar
85 YEARS ON MAURITIUS ISLAND
Maqsa
GRUPO MINERO DUMAS MEXICO
MAURITIUS
ISLAND
SOUTH EAST
AFRICA
Cat dealership Scomat and Caterpillar celebrated 85 Years
of presence on Mauritius Island. During the October 2014
celebration Malaga Demonstrator Instructors, Emmanuel
Chatelain and Yoann Avrillier, supported Scomat in the
85th Anniversary by delivering “Eco Drive” operator training
and operator competitions.
The Republic of Mauritius, is an island nation in the Indian
Ocean about 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) off the southeast
coast of the African continent. The country includes the
island of Mauritius, Rodrigues, the islands of Agalega, and
the archipelago of Saint Brandon. The islands of Mauritius,
Rodrigues, and Réunion, form part of the Mascarene Islands.
The capital and largest city is Port Louis.
Just imagine 85 years ago... no fax machine, no e-mail, no
internet, not even a regular airline connection between the
tiny island to the rest of the World, the first bulldozer was
purchased by an Anglo-Ceylan Company from Mauritius
Island. It was 1929, only four years after Caterpillar sold their
first bulldozer in 1925.
Maqsa Certified Dealer Instructor, Hector Ivan Ramirez,
delivered Telehandler certification course for Grupo Minero
Dumas Mexico S.A. DE C.V. Grupo Mexico is a holding
company whose main activities are in the mining-metallurgic
industry, the exploration, exploitation, and benefit of metallic
and non-metallic ores, multimodal freight railroad service,
and infrastructure development. Its principal subsidiaries are
Mining, Transportation, and Infrastructure. The mining division
currently represents the majority of their sales and is comprised
of Southern Copper Corporation, which includes Minera México
and Southern Peru, as well as Asarco in the U.S. Minera’s daily
activities include building ramps, working with Alimaks, and
specializing in road construction.
Madisa
NEMISA, VILLA DE LA PAZ, SLP. MEXICO
The quality and reliability of the equipment with the aftersales service have always been the main strength that
has largely contributed to shape the infrastructure in the
Mauritius of today.
Outside the traditional agricultural sector, Scomat serves
the building and construction sector as well as public works.
Scomat is also the leader in power generation. The main
organizations and luxurious hotels are equipped with Cat
gensets. Three powerful units, using fuel bio-gas extracted
from a local landfill, provide electrical power that is redistributed on the national network.
With a diversified market as it is in Mauritius, Scomat
technicians have no other choice than to be multi-skilled.
They have to be competent on working on a bulldozer, on
a telehandler as well as on a marine engine. To fulfill this
requirement they utilize courses offered through Caterpillar
University and Scomat Academy.
“At Scomat we adapt our vision to that of our Caterpillar partner by
offering quality training to our personnel and by adapting our service
to the needs of our Clients.” says General Manager Jocelyn Labour.

Caterpillar Demonstration Instructor, Onofre Quintero and
Madisa Certified Dealer Instructor, Jose Cardona collaborated
in a new machine delivery/operator training for the R1700G
Underground Loaders. Training was delivered at “NEMISA”
Negociación Minera Santa María de la Paz y Anexas, S.A. de
C.V. at the customer mine site in the city of Villa de la Paz, SLP.
Mexico. Juan Vallejo from Madisa and Hector Ivan Ramirez
from Maqsa also contributed in order to prepare for the CIAP
process for operator certification on this machine family.
Nine operators and eight mechanics were trained on the new
machine features and characteristics, main component function
and location, preventive maintenance routines and schedules,
proper operation and safety recommendations for underground
machine application.

BACK TO BASICS FOR DEALER OPERATOR TRAINERS:
Carl Thomsen
Caterpillar Service Training
Consultant
The Asia Pacific Equipment Training team has
organized a Back-to-Basics Training for China
Dealer Operator Trainers at the Equipment
Training Centre in Kunshan, China. This
training was in response to dealer feedback
on the need to refresh themselves on the
operating skills and applications for medium
wheel loaders and K-Series Motor Graders.
The training was divided in 2 sessions,
from 17-21 November and 24-28 November
and was attended by 9 Dealer Operators
Instructors from CEL, ECI-Metro and LSH.
The training was delivered on a 140K Motor Grader and 950H and
950GC Wheel Loaders. The course was designed to give participants
instruction on basic surveying, excavating and grading a road
section to a subgrade level, and forming a road to a set design grade
including final trim. Techniques on how to construct V-drains using
the motor grader were also part the motor grader training.
The 950H training included operating techniques to build level pads,
face management and truck loading. The team hired two trucks to
simulate production loading and emphasized the importance of cycle
time and exchange times.
With the availability of 950GC, Dealer Operators were also given NPI
training on the operator-specific features and benefits of the machine.
Wang Jian Wu from ECI-Metro commented, “The training was very
useful to increase my skills on how to operate machine efficiently and
correctly.”
Li Jian Lin from CEL also commented, “I hope this kind of training is
held frequently as this gives us more time to operate machines in
close to real world applications.”
This year the Equipment Training Centre at Kunshan has been
instrumental in hosting 20 training and demonstration events. The
various events were attended by more 250 people from different
Caterpillar business units, dealer sales personnel and operators and
customers.
The training was led by Carl Thomsen and supported by the China team (Qiao Liping,
Zou Tong, Feng Baoxin). Dealer participants were as follows: Yan Hongfei (LSHM),
Zhou Cheng Liang (ECM), Wang Jian Wu (ECM), Li Jian Lin (CEL), Zhou Houyaun
(CEL), Chan Chun Man (CEL HK) Zhang Junting (CEL) and Li Yongping (CEL), Xin Wei
Hua (LSHM).
CAT SIMULATORS NOW AT KUNSHAN TRAINING CENTER:
Caterpillar Equipment
Training Center at
Kunshan has just
opened its Simulator
Room to complement
existing training
machines at the
training center to
support Machine
Orientation and
Xin Wei Hua LSHM
Operator Training.
The team has
completed the installation and testing of the latest generation of
Cat Simulators. The Simulator Room features a large wheel loader
and off-highway truck simulators, which are the latest generation
simulators that will provide a useful tool for the training center.
With limited resources for off-highway truck and large wheel
loaders, this will aid the Operator Trainers and Customers in
developing the skills to operate these machines in a safe and
productive manner.
Cat Simulators are
an easy-to-use,
cost-effective and
reliable training
method. Before
training operators on
valuable equipment
and running the risk
of a mishap, their
training can begin

LAYTON CONSTRUCTION UTILIZES CATERPILLAR UNIVERSITY
Implementing required training can be a challenge, especially when you’re
located all over the country. Chris Bardin, Corporate Safety and Health Director
for Layton Construction, has been utilizing Caterpillar University’s online Customer
Campus for nearly a year to support Layton’s safety training initiative and says
that the ability for employees to complete their required training on their own
time, as well as the company’s ability to track completion, is critical.
“Our employees can go in on their schedule, knock out the two mandatory
modules per month, and we can automatically share completion progress with our
Strategic Business Units,” says Bardin. “It drives competition between the groups
because they can see that they’re lagging behind, and they’ll get on their field
employees to get the training done.”
And while the training is fundamental and friendly competition drives completion,
Layton ensures that knowledge is truly attained through the training and
completes hands-on rating training. They also have realized that while much
of the safety training is job-specific, there’s something for everyone. The wide
variety of topics available through the Customer Campus, truly aligns with
Layton’s safety culture, or LIFE - Layton Injury Free Environment (LIFE) and can be
applied to everyday life.
At the end of December 2014, Layton Construction had completed over 6000
courses in just a few months, with more than 500 students in the system. Over
the next six months, Layton plans to implement online training with everyone in
the company.
Learn more about the customer campus, visit http://cat.com/catu or simply contact
Valerie Cantrell by email [email protected].
