Maps are flat, detailed representations of places on Earth. Each half of the
world is known as a hemisphere. The imaginary line that runs west to east,
or horizontally, around our Earth is the equator. It divides the Earth into
northern and southern hemispheres. The imaginary line that runs north to
south, or vertically, around the Earth is the prime meridian. It divides the
Earth into western and eastern hemispheres.
