Humphrey Bogart in a bar and
they became fast friends. In
1945, Mr. Bogart and actress
Lauren Bacall eloped at nearby
Malabar Farm.
Louis Bromfield was far ahead
of his time in warning about
pollution, chemical-intensive
farming and indiscriminate
use of pesticides. He
promoted contour plowing,
crop rotation, wetland
preservation and many other
“new” agricultural methods
that have become widely
accepted and practiced today.
In 1935, Pleasant Hill Dam
was built by the Army Corps of
Engineers with the help of
President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s job program. The 865acre lake was developed for
flood control and recreational
activities.
In 1949, Mohican State Park
was established. Originally
named Clear Fork State Park,
the park was renamed Mohican State Park in 1966.
In 1974, Mohican Lodge
opened on April 27th. “Built by
the citizens of Ohio for the use
and enjoyment of all who come
here.”
