LAB 01 Windows 8 File Management Assignment Student Learning Outcomes: The purpose of this assignment is to learn file management commands in Microsoft Windows 8. After completing this assignment, you should be able to: ● Use the Windows File Explorer application ● Download and unzip files ● Perform file management commands such as copying, moving, deleting and renaming files ● Create file folders and organize files in folders ● Sort files in the Details View ● View file extensions Preparation: Note: If you do not have Windows 8 that’s OK. You may use your version of Windows or Mac OS. Obviously the lab book and my screen shots will look different compared to your screen shots. See print screens at the end of the document. In preparation for this assignment, you will to: Read Chapter 2 Managing Libraries, Folders, & Files, & Using Search in the Windows 8 Go! Lab book. Zipping and Unzipping Files: • Do the Working with Zip Files lesson at the following website: http://www.gcflearnfree.org/techsavvy/9 File Explorer, Home Tab Commands: ● There are many ways to perform commands in File Explorer: o New to Windows 8 is the Home Ribbon which contains the most common file/folder commands such as copy, paste, cut, Move to, Copy to, Delete, Rename and New Folder. o Select the file or folder and then click the button on the Home Ribbon. ● Also, you can still use the Windows 7 commands as well: o Right-click on the folder or file or blank area to get the Shortcut Menu. o Click and drag files/folders to move them. No menu. o Right-click and drag files/folders will display the shortcut menu with options to move, copy, create a shortcut and cancel. This option is actually a little safer than the click and drag method. Sometimes you have selected the wrong file/folder or you meant to copy and not move the file/folder. From the shortcut menu you can choose to cancel or copy not just move the file/folder. Assignment: 1. Please read through all of the instructions to get a complete idea of what the assignment is about before doing the steps. 2. Note: The instructions in this assignment use the USB drive. You may use your hard drive. If you use your hard drive, then be sure to pay attention to where you download/save your files.
