Sweets for Your Sweet
Have you ever wondered where the tradition
of gifting chocolate candy in heart- shaped
boxes originated? It started with Richard
Cadbury, of England’s famous family of
chocolate makers. He would design artful
containers shaped as hearts in order to package
the sweets. The containers were often saved to
hold keepsakes. Today, 36 million heart-shaped
boxes of candy are sold each year.
The History of Presidents Day
Presidents Day began in 1885 as a day to
honor the first U.S. President, George
Washington. It was originally celebrated on
February 22nd, Washington’s actual birthday.
However, in 1968, the holiday was changed due
to the Uniform Holiday Act. Now we recognize
the third Monday in February as Presidents Day,
a national holiday. Although, there are still
states who choose to celebrate on February
22nd. Presidents Day honors the birthdays of
President Washington and Lincoln, along with
other past Presidents.
LODGE LANE Honors Culinary Great
Edna Lewis
A chef, cookbook author and teacher, Edna Lewis
(1916-2006) was a champion of Southern cooking who
helped educate and mentor generations of professional
chefs and food enthusiasts. Chef Edna Lewis began her
culinary journey as a young girl in the town of
Freetown, VA, where she learned to cook on the family
farm. Using only the basics, Chef Lewis learned how to
cook over a wood fire without the use of measuring
tools, preparing the food that was harvested on their
land. Manhattan’s East Side is where she got started at
her first restaurant, Café Nicholson, a spot that quickly
grew in popularity for its delicious Southern cuisine.
Through her cookbooks and contributions to the
culinary world, Lewis was able to provide a taste of
early 20th century African American farm life. With
honors such as Cook’s Magazine’s “Who’s Who in
American Cooking” (1986), and the “James Beard
Living Legend Award”, Ms. Lewis will go down in
history as one of the greatest influencers of refined
Southern cooking.
Drink to Your Health
One of the most important
things we can do for our
bodies is to keep it hydrated. It
is a simple process that
basically means we have to
consume enough fluids
throughout the day. You may
ask “What is enough?” For the
average person, 6 to 8 - eight
oz glasses of water is enough
for the day. Water is the best
source of hydration because it
contains no additives. Coffees,
teas and soda contain caffeine
which is alright in moderation,
but not the best choice for
keeping hydrated. They may
also have the opposite effect by
working as a diuretic, causing
us to lose fluids. Keeping our
bodies hydrated is essential for
our skin, cells and muscle
function. When we become
dehydrated, we may feel dizzy
or light-headed. Toxins build
up in the body often causing
confusion & weakness. We
become at risk for dehydration
and increase the occurrence of
urinary tract infections. Not
drinking fluids, because we
don’t want to urinate, is not a
good choice. Urination is a
natural body process that is
critical to eliminate toxins and
waste from the body. So
remember to drink a glass of
water with every meal and then
several times throughout the
day. LODGE LANE offers
hydration throughout the
building. Take advantage and
keep yourself hydrated.
Happy Black
History Month
“If a race has no history, it has
no worthwhile tradition, it
becomes a negligible factor in
the thought of the world, and it
stands in danger of being
eliminated. The American
Indian left no continuous
record, and where is he today?
The Hebrew keenly appreciated
the value of tradition, as is
attested by the Tanakh itself. In
spite of worldwide persecution,
therefore, he is a great factor in
our (American) civilization.” —
Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Black
History Month is an annual
observance in the U.S., Canada
and the U.K. for remembrance
of important people and events
in the history of the African
diaspora. It is celebrated
annually in the United States, in
February. The precursor to Black
History Month was created in
1926 in the United States, when
African American scholar and
historian Carter G. Woodson
announced the second week of
February to be “Negro History
Week”. This week was chosen
because it coincided with the
birthday of Abraham Lincoln on
February 12th and Frederick
Douglass on February 14th. Join
the LODGE LANE Activity
Department in celebrating the
array of contributions made by
African American citizens
toward the development and
improvement of this great
nation.

February 3rd, 1959: The
Day Music Died
The Day the Music Died
commemorates the untimely
death of singers Buddy Holly,
Richie Valens and the Big
Bopper. These three Rock singers
died in an airplane crash on
February 3, 1959, at the height
of their popularity.
Every generation has their
music idols. These three were
among the top of the 1950’s
generation. Those who grew up
in the fifties mourned the
premature deaths of their music
idols. Memorials and
remembrances occurred for
years. Today, there are many
websites memorializing their
deaths and detailing the events
sports fans take part. After all,
watching the great ads and the
super half-time show are as
much a part of the game as the
game itself. Many spectators
readily admit they watch the
Super Bowl just to see the ads.
