GENERAL REVIEW OF NIGERIA’S
INDUSTRY ACTIVITIES IN 2000
PETROLEUM
1. SEISMIC AND DRILLING ACTIVITIES:
During the year 2000, seismic exploratory activities were carried out by
two (2) Joint Venture Companies (Shell and Chevron) and four (4)
Production
Sharing
Companies
(Addax
Petroleum,
SNEPCO,
Exxon/Mobil, Esso and ELF (PSC)). (See table 1a for details). A total of
7,121.120 square kilometers of 3-D seismic data were acquired. This is
an increase of about 5,133.12 square kilometers when compared with
1,988 square kilometers acquired in 1999. As in 1999, there was no
length of 2-D seismic data acquired in the year 2000. (See Table 1a).
16,929.35 square kilometers of 3-D seismic data were processed and re
processed by 3 JVCs during the year under consideration compared
with 10,888 square kilometers processed and reprocessed in 1999 (see
Table 1b).
A total number of 32 rigs were in operation in the year 2000 compared
with 20 rigs in operation in 1999. 24 rigs were in operation for Joint
Venture Companies (JVC) while 8 rigs were in operation for Production
Sharing Companies (PSC). While 13 of the rigs were on offshore
operations, 19 were on onshore Land/Swamp operations. Overall the
year 2000 showed a better performance than 1999. This was due to
relative stability and rising crude oil prices witnessed throughout the
year. (See Table 2a)
3
A total number of one hundred and forty-eight (148) wells were
drilled/re-entered. In comparison with one hundred and twenty-five (125)
wells drilled/re-entered in 1999, this shows an increase of twenty-three
(23) wells. The wells were made up of nine (9) Exploratory, nine (9)
Appraisal, ninety-four (94) development wells and thirty-six (36)
workovers. (See Table 2b)
2. SEISMIC AND DRILLING ACTIVITIES:
Overall, crude oil production for the year under review was recorded as

4. CRUDE OIL AND GAS REVENUE FLOW INTO FEDERATION
ACCOUNT
During the year 2000, the total natural gas and crude oil revenue flow
into the Federation Account added up to $14,985.92 million, an increase
of about &7,642.82 million or about 104.10% when compared with that
of 1999, which amounted to $7,343.10 million. This was principally due
to global increase in crude oil prices as a result of measures taken by
the organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to maintain
market stability. The revenue breakdown was made up of $9,562.71
6
million from the sales of NNPC equity in JVCs, $3,262.06 million from
Petroleum profit Tax (PPT), $1,843.51 million from the other sources
such as penalties for gas flared, rentals and receipts from taxes. (see
Table 12).
5. NATURAL GAS PRODUCTION AND DISPOSALS
Available data show that 1,599 Billion standard cubic feet (Bscf) of
natural gas was produced by the seven Joint Venture Companies during
the year, showing an increase of 271 Bscf or 20.41% when compared
with 1,328 Bscf produced in 1999. A total volume of 882.760 Bscf
(55.20%) was flared during operations. Disposals include LNG 253.122
Bscf, Gas Re-injection 299.738 Bscf, Gas used as fuel 78.411 Bscf, Gas
sold to third parties by Shell an Chevron 13.818 Bscf, Gas as NGL
23.061 Bscf and Gas sold to NGC by shell 52.793 Bscf. (see Table 9).
Nigerian Gas Company sold 106.150 Bscf of natural gas at a total value
of N3,185 million while Shell Petroleum Development Company of
Nigeria (SPDC) sold, on behalf of its partners, 83.912 Bscf of natural
gas at N869.642 million during the year. (see Tables 10 and 11).
6. DOMESTIC REFINING
The three domestic refineries, comprising PHRC, WRPC and KRPC,
processed 36,282,790 barrels (averaging 99,133 b/d) of Bonny Light
and Escravos crude oil streams in the year. This shows a decline of
30,126,464 barrels when compared with 66,409,254 barrels of crude oil
processed in 1999. This is due to the shutdown of WRPC for the most
part of the year and other problems facing KRPC and PHRC. The three
7
refineries received 36,189,139 barrels of crude oil while they had
3,860,551 barrels as opening stock, hence total crude oil available for
processing stood at 40,049,690 barrels. The closing stock therefore,
stood at 3,766,901 barrels. (see Tables 22,23 & 24).
The breakdown of crude oil processed by each of the three refineries is
given below:

when compared with the year 1999’s import figure of 2,639,189 mt, the
year 2000 imports show an increase of4,621,816 mt or 175.12%. the
sudden surge in importation is partly due to rising domestic consumption
and partly operational breakdowns of all the local refineries during the
year. (see Table 32)
8. PETROLEUM PRODUCTS EXPORTS AND BUNKER SALES
PPMC exported 1,163,899 mt of petroleum products during the year.
These are made up of High Pour Fuel oil (HPFO) 1,137,666 mt, Low
