Warrick County, Letters Left at Post Offices as Listed
in the Warrick Democrat, 1850–1860
Wendy L. Adams and Kimberly E. Hunter
During the 1850s, the Warrick Democrat, a Warrick County newspaper first published in
Newburgh and then Boonville, Indiana, printed a “Lists of Letters” waiting to be picked up in the
post offices in either Newburgh or Boonville, Indiana. The list could generally be found on the
third or fourth page of the four-page weekly newspaper, though occasionally a list was located
on the first or second page. New lists were not printed each month but on a quarterly basis—
usually at the beginning of January, April, July, and October. Each list generally includes the
location of the post office, how many days the letters had “left” (indicating how long the letters
would remain at the post office), and the names addressed on the letters. The name of the
postmaster follows the list.1
The following lists of letter recipients include names listed in the Democrat from July
1850 to July 1860. Since the decade of weekly newspapers is incomplete, some months are
missing. When the lists from both the Newburgh and Boonville post offices appear on the same
page, the second list is not preceded by the date of the newspaper. Spelling and word order
reflect the manner in which they appear on the list. Punctuation has been added to facilitate the
reading of the names.
