Jobs in Japan The number of people working as rice farmers has massively decreased. Japan’s economy is based on iron and steel, cars and high tech industries like electronics. More people in Japan now work giving a service, with a rapidly growing research and development industry also evident. The Japanese work very long hours. They often work a 13 hour day, work on Saturday and work on Sunday too. Manufacturing’s decreased because it’s cheaper for them to make their goods abroad where wages are lower.
