National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day observed annually in the United States on December 7th
2,403 victims were killed on Dec. 7, 1941 in the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii. Over the next
seven hours, there were coordinated attacks on various U.S. and British held territories. Japan intended the attack as a
preventative action to keep the U.S. Pacific Fleet from interfering with military actions the Empire of Japan had planned in
Southeast Asia against territories of the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and the U.S.
The Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service attacked without warning and without a declaration of
war, judged later by the Tokyo Trials to be a war crime. The attack sank two U.S. Navy
battleships and damaged five others. Within hours of the attack, Canada declared war on
Japan, the first Western nation to do so. The following day, the United States declared war on
Japan and entered World War II on the side of the Allies. The attack came as a profound shock
to the American people and domestic support for non-interventionism vanished.
