Volume 36, Issue 10 “And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.” (2 Corinthians 1:21-22) Two words stand out in this passage for me – “establishes” and “guarantee.” In September, every year, we have sort of a ‘restart’ with our ministry. As summer ends and school begins, so things in the church begin too. Choirs are full force, Youth Group and THWOG are up and running, Sunday School is back in session, Bible Studies (old and new) are meeting regularly, outside groups are back on schedule, and two services have replaced our one service. In other words, we have ‘established’ our normal routine – with some new additions. The thing about the church is that we often want to say ‘our’ ministries are resuming. Sure, we play a part in scheduling, informing and promoting – but don’t ever forget whose ministry it is – and who establishes it. You see, it’s not us – it’s God! When we remember that our ministries are God’s – then we know that when it seems like the children aren’t paying attention in Sunday School, or the Choir seems off-key, or the youth are making bad choice, or the Bible Study isn’t attracting more people, or the offering isn’t what we want or need – well, we realize that we are only instruments for God, and that he is the one who will ‘establish’ these ministries. As human beings (you and me), we need to be patient as God establishes HIS work in HIS church. We need to be happy being HIS instruments, and allowing God to work through us. God is establishing his church. Now, that word ‘guarantee’. In the world, guarantee is sure a funny word. When we have bought cars, we are told about what is guaranteed and for how long, and then they really push those extended warranties (which ‘guarantees’ things for longer) – yet the extended guarantee is usually a pretty long document which is almost impossible to read fully before you make the complete purchase. How many of you really read all 21 pages of the ‘terms of agreement’ before you say ‘agree’ to updating your i-phone? I know I don’t! So, when you place an offering in the plate at church – or when you make a pledge on Consecration Sunday (October 9th) for 2017, what guarantee do we offer at Summit? Do we have any extended warranties to offer? And the answer is ------ “YES!” But it isn’t from me or the session. The guarantee is from God and better yet the ‘extended warranty’ is from God too! You don’t have to click agree, or read any long documents, or even negotiate what you want to pay. You see it’s free. When you say “YES” to Jesus, God says “YES” to you by putting his seal on our hearts – the Holy Spirit. There is no guarantee greater than that one! So, at Summit as we begin the established routine, and as God continues to remind us of the guarantee He gives, I would say you are getting back all that you put into it. You see – we aren’t really in charge of establishing things or guaranteeing things – GOD IS! I really like that extended warranty! See you in church! Galatians 6:9 1 "I prayed for Faith, and thought that some day Faith would come down and strike me like lightning. But Faith did not seem to come. One day I read in the tenth chapter of Romans, 'Now Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God'. I had closed my Bible, and prayed for Faith. I now opened my Bible, and began to study, and Faith has been growing ever since. " ~D.L. Moody http://www.forgottenword.org/quotes.html DATE TITLE OCTOBER 2 “Eyes on Eternity This day we ask ourselves, “What does it mean to be a disciple?” How do we take up our cross and follow Jesus? What is the reward we are promised in this passage? We remember today that: “My heart always goes where I put God’s money.” OCTOBER 9 “For Such A Time as This” As we consecrate our giving for 2017 this day we remember that there is a gift of the Holy Spirit called “giving” and we are reminded to excel in the ‘grace of giving’ as we remember how, for our sake, that Jesus was rich – yet became poor for us! OCTOBER 16 “Does It Matter If the Bible Is True” Is the Bible true? Can we rely on it? What difference does it make anyway? Can’t we just look to our own hearts to discover God’s word to us? Guest: Sue Cyre SUMMARY OCTOBER 23 “Deep Water” After a long day of unsuccessful fishing, the first disciples encounter Jesus and his directions to them to work harder and to go deeper for fish – and success comes their way! But, they are afraid. So what do you do when God tells you to go deeper? OCTOBER 30 “Quietly Afraid” Jesus tells us not to be afraid – but fear grasps at all of us for a variety of reasons. God ‘whispers’ the Good News to us, and tells us to shout it from the mountaintops. Do we let our fears hinder our walk with the Lord and our sharing of the faith? Directory Updates: 2 UNSUNG HERO! Vi Engle! Each week, Vi is at the office faithfully writing the checks to pay all our bills. She must make sure that every expenditure is accurate, properly documented and deducted from the correct account – no small task in itself. We love the great job she does for us and we love Vi! Thanks for all you do! Peace be unto you! May the good Lord bless you for the good work you are doing. I received a Bible at my confirmation day at my church, Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Christ Congregation. I later realized it was a gift from Summit Presbyterian church as a way of passing Jesus' love. I'm really being blessed by the Bible. Just want to say thank you.
