Session 1) Extended Narrative
Ghost At The Door
Up to 60 mins
There is a knock at Scrooge’s door and a haunting voice calling Scrooge’s
name. Something ghostly wants to come in and the children experience the
fear of opening a door which really shouldn’t be opened.
Using Spook Teaching’s unique style of writing narrative, the children write
their journey to answer the door. Here they are guided by Scrooge, who
takes every opportunity to explore and develop every sense and emotion to
help create their narrative.
Literacy
Pay-off
Time passes slowly when you are scared and we encourage
each child to describe details, put their emotions into
words, and slowly build up their story into a truly gothic
horror narrative.

Session 4) Obituary Writing
Scrooge’s Life of Misery or Happiness?
Up to 60 mins
Having been shown his own grave Scrooge is now in panic and wants to
know what his legacy will be?
Using past tense and a full range of language features the children write
Scrooge’s obituary narrative for him, explaining the person he is destined to
become.
You can choose whether Scrooge’s obituary is based on his life as a miser,
true to the novel, or whether to be creative and imagine he turned to a life
of happiness.
Not only will this allow the children to write in a gothic style it will really
allow them to explore Scrooge’s character. Therefore, they get a fuller
understanding of the Dickens novel.
Literacy
Pay-off
This offers a new style of writing for children, and allows them to explore
Scrooge’s character, and summarise the salient experiences of a person’s life
and times.
Session 5) Verse Writing
Scrooge Sees The Light!
Up to 45 mins
Scrooge now understands the error of his ways, and wants to spread
Christmas spirit to all of those around him! The children write a verse to go
inside their Christmas card, getting jovial advice on rhyming from Scrooge!
The writing is over and now is the time for Christmas carols, performed by
the pupils and.... Scrooge!
Literacy
Pay-off
This activity is a great happy round-off to the day as the children create their
own rhyming verse, and sing some Christmas carols with Scrooge!
