Information to doctors/consultants concerning documentation of special
examination arrangements at the University of Oslo
Students who have a need for special examination arrangements must apply for
them. For an application to be evaluated, documentation must be submitted by a
doctor/consultant regarding health problems/disabilities in an examination situation.
The documentation must include a recommendation for special examination
arrangements.
The purpose of special examination arrangements
Special examination arrangements are governed by the Directive concerning studies
and examinations at the University of Oslo § 7-6 (2) and by University and College Law
§ 4-3 (5). The recommended special examination arrangement(s) should compensate
for the drawbacks a disability gives in an examination situation. A special examination
arrangement must not be so extensive that it provides an advantage in relation to
other students and furthermore cannot lead to a reduction in the examination’s
academic demands. The measures that are granted should be sufficient , however
may not be optimal in relationship to an applicant’s own wishes or self-evaluation.
Application procedure
The decision to grant individual special examination arrangements is determined by
the faculty’s examination officers based on the student’s application, doctor/consultant
evaluations, provisions in applicable laws and directives, and may include academic
considerations as well. A diagnosis does not automatically constitute the right to
special examination arrangements.
Concentration problems and exam nerves
Concentration problems and exam nerves are conditions that do not in themselves
give a basis for granting special examination arrangements. However, afflictions that
are of a serious nature can, in certain cases, be considered a disability. To qualify for
special examination arrangements, this must be documented by a doctor/consultant.
Allergy
Allergies are treated as an acute affliction/health problem. A doctor’s attest is
required for an allergy to qualify for special examination arrangements; it should be
dated earliest 7 days before the first examination date.
Tendonitis
In the case of a serious tendonitis affliction, extra time and/or a PC may be
granted. The need for a special examination arrangement must be documented
in the attest.
Examples of types of special examination arrangements
The following types of special examination arrangements are available: extra time,
PC, adjustable chair, adjustable table, sheltered workspace, individual room,
daybed, etc. Please note that for certain special examination arrangements, such as
individual rooms, availability may be limited.
