Imagine your son or daughter suffered a knee
injury while playing a sport – how do you find
out if the injury is serious?
Or imagine one of your family members is
suffering from sudden unexplained abdominal
pain – how do you find out if they will need
surgery?
From Ultrasounds to Digital
Fluoroscopy, patients from across the
region are able to receive diagnostic
tests close to home. Each year,
approximately 362,000 exams are
performed at all hospital & urgent
care sites of Niagara Health.
Medical Imaging provides physicians with
information about internal structures that
they otherwise could not see. As a result,
medical imaging equipment plays a key role in
maintaining and improving patient health.

activities inside the body. Doctors depend
on this advanced technology to investigate
a patient’s condition; confirm diagnoses;
recommend treatment options and then assess
the response to that treatment.
Some Medical Imaging services operate around
the clock to support the care of inpatients,
outpatients, and urgent and emergency cases.
This ensures that patients across Niagara region
are able to receive the care they need, when
they need it.
In order to continue providing the highest
quality of care for Niagara Health’s patients, it
is absolutely essential that Medical Imaging
equipment is kept up-to-date.
Your gift to Medical Imaging will aid in the
replacement and enhancement of Medical
Imaging equipment, tools Niagara Health
doctors need to make the best decisions in
their patients’ care.
Your donation supports a
Healthier Niagara.
Medical Imaging helps inform diagnosis
and guides treatment plans, making it an
incredibly important piece of a health care
team’s tool kit.
Niagara Health’s Medical Imaging arsenal
features specialized equipment that
includes: CT; MRI; Digital Fluoroscopy;
Ultrasound; Nuclear Medicine;
Mammography and X-Ray units.
“It is absolutely essential that our equipment
be kept up-to-date,” says Dr. Dobranowski.

course – that not only promotes healthy,
active play, but also provides an opportunity
for challengers to support Niagara Health’s
youngest patients.
“Mud, sweat and cheers” is the event’s
slogan. Kids helping kids is what the event is
all about.
The 2016 Kids Ultimate Challenge raised
an incredible $55,000 for the Children’s
Health Unit, making it the best year yet!
Over $130,000 has been raised since the
inaugural event in 2013.
A sell-out roster of 900 kids from across
Niagara participated in the Challenge on
Sunday, June 5, at Burgoyne Woods Park in
St. Catharines. The family-friendly event was
packed with kid-friendly activities – including

Thanks to participants’ efforts, the unit has acquired a Stryker
Incubator Transport Stretcher, 2 specialized cribs and most
recently, a VeinViewer Vision2 Vascular Imaging System that uses
infrared light to locate veins, making it easier for healthcare teams
to start IVs and draw blood work on young patients.
“As babies and children can have small and intricate veins, starting IVs on them can be very
difficult for the doctors and nurses. At times, the IV may need to be attempted several times
which causes more discomfort and stress for the child,” explains Carol Munro, NH Clinical
Manager of the Children’s Health Unit. “This piece of equipment greatly benefits the children
who are patients at our hospital. Thank you to all Kids Ultimate Challenge participants and
supporters for making a difference for our young patients and their families.”

2016 Thank-a-Thon
We just called to say ‘Thank You!’
Doreen Estelle Bent and her
Legacy of Giving
OneFoundation
for Niagara Health
System celebrates
Doreen Bent, her
life’s work and her
continuing legacy.
If ever there was a face of compassion and
dedication, Doreen Bent is it.
Doreen’s family was at her side to say a final
goodbye on December 31st, 2013. She is
remembered with affection, warmth and
humour by those who loved her. What’s
more, the people touched by Doreen’s giving
spirit are even more far-reaching than even
she could have known.
After her passing, OneFoundation was the
grateful recipient of a generous bequest
gift from Doreen Bent’s estate to be used
for patient-care equipment at the Greater
Niagara General Site. To understand what
makes this gesture especially moving, we go
back to the 1950’s!
Doreen was a ‘NH Family Member’ – her
connection with GNG dating back to her
training days when she studied nursing while
living in the hospital’s on-site residence.
Graduating in 1961, she devoted herself to
her nursing career. Doreen was passionate
about caring for patients – fueled by that
passion, she was driven to continually
improve her knowledge and practices.
Only leaving the Greater Niagara General
Hospital for short periods to upgrade her
nursing education, she rose through the
ranks moving from Registered Nurse, to Head
Nurse, to Director and then Vice President
of Nursing. Throughout that time, many
nurses at varying stages of their careers
were inspired by her determination to make
the patient experiences better. The gift she
bequeathed to the hospital at the end of
her life seemed a natural extension of her
untiring commitment.
In recognition of her gift, a plaque honouring
Doreen Bent was added to the GNG Donor
Wall. On April 8th, Doreen’s family and
friends visited the hospital to see the
dedication (pictured above). Being one of
five children, it was no surprise that a sizable
crowd made up of local and Toronto-area
friends and relatives gathered to pay her
tribute. Joyful, tearful, sometimes comical
– Doreen’s loved ones enjoyed sharing their
memories. Nieces Elizabeth Black and Sherry
Bell recounted how Doreen was cared for in
her final days by a nurse who she herself had
trained in years past – in a ‘ripple effect’, her
caring found its way back to her.
On August 4, over 1500 healthcare
donors received a phone call, but they
were not asked for a donation. Together
with community partner Minacs,
OneFoundation for Niagara Health
System called donors during their
Second Annual Thank-a-thon to simply
say ‘Thanks!’
OneFoundation staff and board
members, hospital auxilians, volunteers,
and Niagara Health executives called
donors, from the Minacs site on
Montrose Road in Niagara Falls, to let
them know that their donation will help
Niagara Health build a healthier Niagara,
through extraordinary caring, for every
person, every time.
If we missed you this time, we hope to
catch you on the line soon!
Many thanks to our volunteers who
helped us call our many supporters!
Thank you for your thanks!
Through her bequest gift, Doreen’s caring
spirit will be felt by many more people – her
legacy of caring will live on.
The Power of Music
Nathan Glintz, a high school student and award
winning pianist, graciously volunteers bi-weekly
to play piano live at the St. Catharines Site.
Board Members Teresa Quinlin and
Roly Giguere eagerly took to the
phones to thank our supporters!
Staff and visitors stop by to listen, or smile and
wave as they pass by. A few have even danced
to Nathan’s ragtime pieces. For his regular
listeners, Nathan tries to save their favorites until
they arrive. In his opinion, it’s nice to give people
something to stop for and maybe even
distract them for a while.
Thank you Nathan, for generously sharing your
talent with all of us!
John Bullivant, one of our long time
volunteers, joined in again this year
to help spread the thanks!
