MIMR-PHI Institute of Medical Research is seeking a dynamic scientist and leader to direct its basic and translational
research programs in the Centre for Cancer Research. In January 2014, the Monash Institute of Medical Research
(MIMR) and Prince Henry’s Institute (PHI) merged to form MIMR-PHI Institute of Medical Research, creating one of
the largest medical research institutes in Australia. The Institute employs over 450 staff and postgraduate students
and has an annual research budget of over $48 million.
Candidates must have a medical and or Ph.D. degree with proven accomplishments and demonstrated ability to
develop a translational cancer research program. The Centre’s goal is to drive the discovery work of cancer biology
and mechanisms of disease and clinical innovation through the development of novel therapeutics. The Head of
Centre will be responsible for providing oversight and mentoring of the Centre’s research programs, and shared
resources. The Head of Centre will oversee and manage the Centre’s major research operations including strategic
planning and evaluation, allocation of development funds, and innovative early phase clinical trials implementation.
The Head of the Centre will be expected to play a leadership role in the Monash Partners Comprehensive Cancer
Consortium and the Monash Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre Cancer theme. If appropriate, there will be
the opportunity for a clinical appointment in Oncology at Monash Health.
The Centre for Cancer Research at MIMR-PHI presently houses 10 laboratories and several clinical staff with
programs in innate immunity inflammation and cancer, oncogenic signaling, cell adhesion, cancer metastases,
leukemiagenesis, with activities related to lung, breast, brain, ovarian, colorectal, and bladder cancer and pediatric
cancers. In 2015 the Centre for Cancer Research will relocate into a new $84 million Translational Research Facility
(TRF) currently under construction. The TRF will be the flagship of the Monash Health Translation Precinct, a
partnership between MIMR-PHI, Monash University and Monash Health and will enable the translation of innovative
scientific discoveries into clinical care. In addition to the Centre for Cancer Research, the TRF will house a clinical
research floor, a platform technologies floor (Medical Genomics, Cell Therapies, Microimaging, and
Biomarker/Proteomics) in addition to multidisciplinary research floors.
The Head of Centre will be supported in research endeavours with substantial resources and outstanding new
facilities. The position will command an attractive salary package and highly competitive start-up funds and have
access to all of the infrastructure and facilities available on site, as well as those based at Monash University.
