Western Ring Route WATERVIEW CONNECTION Owairaka – Walking and Cycling facilities A range of improved pedestrian and cycling facilities are planned in this area including a connection between Alan Wood and Harbutt Reserves. Harbutt pedestrian bridge Proposed Walking and Cycling Facilities Sector 8 – Avondale Heights Tunnel Existing Walking and Cycling Facilities Sector 8 – Avondale Heights Tunnel Sector 9 – Alan Wood Reserve There are on-road lanes along both sides of the length of Carrington Road and Mt Albert Road to the intersection with Sandringham Road. These cycle lanes are important as they provide a direct link parallel to the proposed SH20 alignment further to the north. Springleigh Avenue links cyclists with the shared walkway / cyclepath through Phyllis Reserve. There are also pedestrian walkways through Oakley Creek Esplanade, Alan Wood Reserve and Hendon Park. Oakley Creek Esplanade can be accessed from Great North Road through a number of locations and stairs into the park and alongside the creek. Alan Wood Reserve and Hendon Park have an entry from New North Road and a number of entries regularly spaced along Hendon Avenue. At the end of the walkway through Hendon Park, the shared pedestrian and cycle path continues through Underwood Park and Walmsley Park. The shared cycleway / pedestrian path continues adjacent to Great North Road, until it enters the Phyllis Street Reserve via a new bridge from the intersection of Great North and Blockhouse Bay Roads. The shared path carries on through the reserve on the eastern side of the underground alignment. Through the reserve the shared path will travel over small foot bridges which link the path over Oakley Creek. As the shared path approaches New North Road, the Harbutt pedestrian bridge over the railway corridor provides a new connection into the reserve from New North Road. This bridge will provide sufficient clearance for the existing railway line. The shared walking and cycle path is expected to continue along both sides of New North Road, crossing Ennismore Road and Hendon Avenue and enter Alan Wood Reserve at the current entrance to the reserve. Sector 9 – Alan Wood Reserve The shared walking and cycling path leaves New North Road and enters Alan Wood Reserve where it runs through the reserve mainly to the north of the underground tunnel alignment. There are two bridges proposed to facilitate pedestrian movements over the motorway. Where the motorway emerges from the tunnel through the Alan Wood Reserve, the Olympus Bridge will provide a link from the centre of the reserve from Hendon Avenue opposite Olympus Avenue. The other bridge, the Hendon Bridge, will also provide a pedestrian link in to the park at the south of the reserve. At the southern portal, the shared walking and cycle path will join the motorway further south. The cycleway is expected to follow adjacent to the northbound carriageway and will pass under the Richardson Road bridge with a link to Richardson Road. From here the cycleway follows the alignment at the grade of the motorway until the Maioro Street northbound on-ramp, where it follows the on-ramp up to the Maioro Street Interchange. At the interchange, the cycleway will connect to the Southern Isthmus Cycleway or onto the local roads. There are crossing facilities through the interchange to allow for pedestrian and cycle movements in all directions. Olympus pedestrian bridge
