Uniform and non-uniform motion
Assignment briefing and mapping to unit:
Your task is to design and create an academic poster (A2 size) which has a focus on the
production and interpretation of graphs representing both uniform and non-uniform motion.
Your poster should include examples of each of the following graphs:
a. displacement against time
b. velocity against time
Your poster should also indicate how the following can be calculated:
c. from a displacement-time graph: the velocity of an object (AC 1.1(ii))
d. from a velocity-time graph: the distance travelled by and the acceleration of, an
object (AC 1.1(i) and (iii))
Relate your graphs to real-life situations and suggest an appropriate audience for your
poster. You should also explain what the shape of each graph indicates. (AC 1.1)
Graphs must be accurately drawn with correct scales and appropriate significant figures
used throughout.

Mapping to Unit
This assignment covers the following learning outcomes & assessment criteria.
LO 1 Understand uniform and non-uniform motion.
AC 1.1 Draw and interpret graphs representing both uniform and non-uniform motion from
given data. Including:
(i) the distance travelled by an object by calculating the area under a velocity-time
graph correctly
(ii) using the slope of a displacement-time graph to find the correct velocity of an
object and
(iii) using the slope of a velocity-time graph to find the acceleration of an object

Grading information for this assignment
Grade descriptor:
1a – Understanding of the subject
The student, student’s work or performance:
For a pass:
Meet the assessment criteria to achieve the learning outcomes for the unit
For Merit:
a. demonstrates a very good grasp of the relevant knowledge base
Contextualisation:- Your A2 poster must include all the examples quoted in
the assignment brief. Your explanations of the graphs must show that you
understand uniform and non-uniform motion.
For distinction:
a. demonstrates an excellent grasp of the relevant knowledge base
Contextualisation:- Your A2 poster must include all the examples quoted in
the assignment brief. Your explanations of the graphs must show that you
have a detailed understanding of uniform and non-uniform motion which can
be applied to different situations. The suggested audience should be
appropriate for the poster you have designed.
Additional
Guidance notes
Ensure you check your work thoroughly before submission, including the
labelling of the graphs’.
References to sources of information should be accurate.
Grade descriptor:
3a, b and c – Application of skills
The student, student’s work or performance:
For a pass:
Meets the assessment criteria to achieve the learning outcomes for the unit
For Merit:
a. generally selects appropriate methods
b. applies appropriate techniques
c. with very good levels of accuracy.
Contextualisation:- Your A2 poster includes all the examples quoted in the
assignment brief, with appropriate explanation, calculations and very good
use of significant figures. You use the correct methods and techniques for
producing the graphs and calculations and are accurate most of the time.
For distinction:
a. consistently selects appropriate methods
b. applies appropriate techniques
c. with excellent levels of accuracy.
Contextualisation:- Your A2 poster includes all the examples quoted in the
assignment brief, with appropriate detailed explanation, accurate calculations
and excellent use of significant figures. You use the correct methods and
techniques for producing the graphs and calculations and are accurate at all
times.
Additional
Guidance notes
Ensure that grammar, spelling and references to sources of information are
accurate.
Grade descriptor:
7a Quality
The student, student’s work or performance:
For a pass:
Meet the assessment criteria to achieve the learning outcomes for the unit
For Merit:
a. is structured in a way that is generally logical and fluent
Contextualisation:- Your A2 poster must be presented in a generally logical
manner. The information is clearly explained and presented in a sequence
which enables the audience to follow easily the points you are making. There
may, however, be some inconsistencies or unevenness in the overall
structure. For it to be fluent it must generally flow freely, without deviation from
the answer to the question. The inclusion of irrelevant material will interrupt
the flow and hence the fluency.
For distinction:
a. is structured in a way that is consistently logical and fluent
Contextualisation:- Your A2 poster will be consistent throughout (for example:
identical font and font size on each graph). It will be consistently logical and
fluent. the structure must be without inconsistencies to maintain a high level of
evenness and consistency. Your poster must follow a set and clear sequence.
For it to be fluent it must consistently flow freely, without deviation from the
answer to the question. The inclusion of any irrelevant material will interrupt
the flow and hence the fluency.
Additional
Guidance notes
Graphs must be accurately drawn with correct scales used throughout.
The poster should be visually attractive and must be suitable for the intended
audience.
Grammar, spelling and references to sources of information should be
accurate.
