WAUKOMIS DRIVE IMPROVEMENTS FACT SHEET Platte County and Kansas City have secured a $5M federal grant to upgrade Waukomis Drive from Englewood Road to the north side of Vaydik Park. Construction funding will be provided by the County’s 3/8th cent road and bridge sales tax and Kansas City is funding the design and right of way acquisition for the project. The proposed improvement will upgrade the road to a two lane Line Creek Parkway with one through travel lane in each direction, bicycle lanes, a raised grass median with left turn lanes at intersections, curbs, streetlights, and a ten foot wide side path trail on the east side. A roundabout is planned at the Line Creek Community Center entrance and NW 62nd Street and is proposed because of the following benefits: Provides traffic calming to keep speeds low in front of Line Creek Elementary and the Montessori schools Allows residents of Clayton Meadows to safely turn south onto Waukomis during rush hour Provides safer crossing from proposed ten foot trail on east side to Vaydik Park and the Line Creek Trail Reduces impacts & cost of East Fork Line Creek bridge by providing seamless transition to narrow median Gives Vaydik Park a real park entrance and provides architectural amenities for Line Creek Parkway The design team evaluated three options: a standard parkway section with wide median, a three lane section, and a hybrid parkway section. Based on comments from the 2015 public presentation, the design team is recommending the hybrid parkway section because it lessens impacts to property, environment, schools, and Vaydik Park. Exhibits showing the three options evaluated are in black and white and the proposed improvement is shown on the color aerial. The proposed typical section will look like the rendering below. PROJECT SCHEDULE It is planned that this project will begin in 2018 after the Englewood Boulevard improvements are substantially complete. Construction phasing, road closures, and detours will be determined at a later time. Residents will be notified before any street closures however private utility companies will be relocating in anticipation of roadway construction and the City and County have no control over their schedules. Utility relocation may begin in the fall of 2016. As the project moves forward, the City will work closely with the Park Hill School District and home associations to provide more details about the construction schedule. Questions or comments need to be e-mailed to [email protected] by May 27, 2016. Exhibits have been uploaded to Kansas City’s Open Data website: https://data.kcmo.org/ Search using the City’s project number “89008260” for Waukomis and “89008121” for Englewood
