A Word From our Principal - Catholic College Bendigo

Edition 6 - 15 March 2012
A Word From our Principal
Visit of Bishop Leslie Tomlinson
We were fortunate to have our newly
installed Bishop come and speak at our
Whole College Assembly on Tuesday. At the
invitation of our College Captains, Bishop
Leslie spoke about the season of Lent,
shared some of his own personal journey
to becoming a Bishop and then spoke of his
vision for young people in the Sandhurst
Diocese today. It is not any easy task to
cover such a broad range of topics to such
a large crowd and it was an even more
difficult task for Bishop Leslie as he is still
settling in to his new role. Having said this, he spoke beautifully and I am sure our students gained much from his
wisdom, personal sharing and indeed his challenge to all of us to be witnesses of Jesus’ love. I was most impressed
with his challenge to make sure what we believe and what we do is clearly connected. It is a challenge we can all take
on board over these remaining weeks of Lent. Are we being witnesses to what we believe in and say?
The Ides of March
It is an often quoted line from Shakespeare that Julius Caesar is warned by the Soothsayer to beware the Ides of March.
Whilst our students need not fear the perils that awaited Caesar on the middle day of March, it is a fitting time to reflect
on what are the perils for our students in relation to the Ides of March. So many of our students have started the year
with a positive outlook but I believe there is a danger for our students at this time in Term One when they can lose some
of their momentum. New goals and new dreams have brought with them new energies. But as the Term drags on it is
perhaps easy at this time to let our guard down and allow our aims and energies to drop. With just two weeks to go
before the end of Term, it can be a valuable investment in time to revisit the goals set for the Term and refocus for these
last few weeks. I ask parents to find just ten minutes to sit with their son or daughter to praise the good work done
and encourage a renewed focus for the last two weeks. Please help our students to not fall victim to the Ides of March.
Year 7 Welcome Mass
Tonight is our Year 7 Welcome Mass and I am sure many of our families are planning to attend the Mass in the La Valla
Gymnasium and then gather within their Houses to share stories of the commencement of the year and all that has
already happened. Like all celebrations of the Eucharist, the Gospel readings are central to the celebration. Tonight the
Gospel reflects on the challenge to let our light shine to all those around us. Indeed this is in many ways the essence
of our College Motto: Live The Good News. Congratulations to our Year 7 students who have entered so positively into
their first Term at Catholic College Bendigo. They have indeed been beacons of light for us all. On Sunday this challenge
of believing and acting upon this belief is again brought to our attention by John. This constant challenge to be true
witnesses to what we believe returns us to the challenge thrown out by Bishop Leslie on Tuesday. Do we really live out
our witness to the message of Jesus? Are we Christlike in the yard, in class, to our friends, to those we do not know?

In continuing with my thoughts
on building resilience in young
people, I would like to discern that
there is nothing wrong with going
in to bat for your children when
they meet with a difficult situation
or obstacle at school. However,
I believe that when children
independently work through these
difficulties, it instils confidence and
teaches them to cope with any
future problems later in life.
This week, I would like to introduce two well credentialed teachers to our
College. Both Mrs Jane Taylor and Mrs Kate Watts have had a variety of
teaching experiences over their careers and arrive at Catholic College
Bendigo with much wisdom about learning and teaching. We are very
fortunate to have both teachers join us in our desire to act beyond the walls
of Catholic College Bendigo.
Year 7 camps have now concluded
and
preparations
are
now
underway for the fast approaching
Year 8 camps. If there is anything
that we should know about your
child’s health before they head
off for camp, please contact
Ms Anthea McEniry, Camp Coordinator or Mrs Joanne Twycross,
Assistant to the Heads of House.
This information will enable your
son or daughter to have a positive
camp experience.
Caritas Ks will be held on the
last day of Term. As most of you
are aware, we assist Caritas
by encouraging your sons and
daughters to raise as much money
as possible, within the limits of your
home life, during the remaining
three weeks of this Term. Our
College has a great reputation
for its continued support of this
Charity and we would like to see
this strengthened this year.
As
previously
mentioned
in
earlier Newsletters, I continue to
encourage you to monitor your
child’s progress and to check that
current work requirements are on
schedule in this short Term of eight
weeks.
God bless.
Mr John Ferris
Deputy Principal – La Valla
Firstly, Mrs Jane Taylor is a welcome member to Champagnat House and is
a highly regarded LOTE teacher in our region. Mrs Taylor is also an important
part of our Leadership of both staff and students in her role as Senior Leader
at La Valla. We wish her well in all her endeavours this year.
As a former student (1985-1990) and staff member (2000), I feel very
privileged to join the Catholic College Bendigo community once again
in 2012 as La Valla Senior Leader. My recent experiences have included
a number of teaching and leadership roles at Bendigo Senior Secondary
College and a management position within the Faculty of Education
at La Trobe University. This new phase of my journey in education is
coloured by a sense of me “coming home” to my extended family at
Catholic College Bendigo. As is normal in any family environment, I
anticipate the ups and downs, rewards and challenges that all families
face together to ensure the best possible outcome for each and every
member of that family. This year’s theme “Empower within…Act beyond”
challenges all of us to look beyond our own immediate situations for the
benefit of those around us. I look forward to working with all students,
staff, parents and friends of the Catholic College Bendigo community
in 2012 and encourage all of us to be inspired to “act beyond” in every
aspect of our lives.
Mrs Watts is a passionate member of both Jaara House and the English
Domain at Coolock. Mrs Kate Watts is the Housegroup Teacher of JR7 and
as you will read is really committed to making a difference to the students
in her care.
I have been involved in education and teaching throughout my life. I
have taught at Weeroona College in Bendigo and have been a Teaching
and Learning Coach for the Department of Education. Through these
roles I have shared my love of learning with students and teachers.
I really enjoy being in schools and working with teenagers to support
their learning and to be part of their journey into adulthood.
As an English teacher at Catholic College Bendigo, I hope to share my
love of literature with my students and develop a lasting respect for the
written word. It has been exciting moving into the new English Learning
Centre and developing new pedagogy to support learning that is
relevant to students needs in our ever changing society.
This year’s motto ‘Empower Within…Act Beyond’ is exciting because it is
asking us to challenge ourselves and act outside our comfort zone. This
gives us many opportunities within our community and beyond to help
others and make a real difference.
I look forward to being part of the Catholic College Bendigo community
and immersing myself in all the opportunities made available to me.
We are blessed to have such committed professionals join us at Catholic
College Bendigo this year. Please remember you can email either teacher
to introduce yourself or to enquire about your son or daughter’s progress in
their subjects this year.
Yours in lifelong learning,
Ms Giselle Talbot

Catholic College Bendigo students selected for State Little Athletics
Championships
A number of students from Catholic College Bendigo recently competed in the Regional Little Athletics competition held in Albury,
NSW. They included Mikayla Rigney (MK6), Joshua Henthorn (CH7), Christopher Browne (CH3), Gabrielle Henthorn (CH3) and
Lachlan Wood (VT4).
All performed very well with Mikayla Rigney, Christopher Browne and Joshua Henthorn achieving quality performances that earned
them the opportunity to compete in the State Championships to be held in Bendigo later this year.
Congratulations to Mikayla who achieved 1st place in her Javelin event - creating a new record, acquiring 2nd place in the Long
Jump and 3rd place in the Shot Put. Mikayla will now be competing in both the Javelin and Shot Put events in her age group at State
level.
Congratulations to Joshua who was well placed in the Under 15 boys section, achieving a 1st place in the Triple Jump, 1st place in
the 200m section, 2nd in the 100m section and 3rd in the Long Jump meaning that Joshua has now progressed to the State level for
all of his events.
Another talented athlete, Christopher Browne, came 1st in Discus with a PB throw of 42.64 metres, 1st in Shot Put and 1st in Javelin in his
age group. As a result Chris will compete in both the Discus and Shot Put at the State LA Track and Field Competition in Bendigo on
March 24 and 25. We wish them all the best in the upcoming State Championships!

Catholic College Bendigo V Bendigo Senior
Junior Girls Volleyball
Secondary College
CCB’s Year 7 and 8 girls Volleyball
Team played in the Sandhurst division
competition on Tuesday 6 March.
Catholic College Bendigo won the toss and elected to bat in their Twenty20 match
against Bendigo Senior Secondary College. A win here would see the boys through to
the Lodden Mallee stage.
Lachlan Holland (MY7) (20 off 22) and Thomas Dunham (MK10) (14 off 17) opened the
innings and got off to a solid start posting 26 off the first 5 overs. The run rate for the
entire innings was up around the 5-6 an over mark, with most batsmen getting starts
but unable to go on. Captain Martin Leyden (BK8) (13 off 20) and Kyle Chant (VT8) (12
off 22) both chipped in but Dooley Niemann (BK11) was the rock of the innings making
31 off just 21 balls. Edward Slater (JR7) and Mason Wade (MY10) both ran well and got
the total up to a competitive 7/113.
Nathan Fitzpatrick (MY10) (3/21 off 4) put Bendigo Senior Secondary College on the
back-foot early with 2 wickets in the first 3 overs. Tight bowling from Lachlan Ross (BK11)
(1/19 off 4), Kyle Chant (1/22 off 4) and Martin Leyden (0/21 off 4) kept the game in the
balance. With 5 overs to go Bendigo Senior Secondary College needed 36 runs.
Fitzpatrick and Leyden kept the scoring down and with Lachlan Holland to bowl
the last over, Bendigo Senior Secondary College required 7 runs to win. They could
only manufacture 6 which left the game a tie. A super over would define the winner!
Bendigo Senior Secondary College batted first and with some hard hitting posted 19,
whilst Catholic College Bendigo could only manage 5. A very close game, which
could have gone either way!
Team: Martin Leyden (BK8), Tom Dunham (MK10), Mason Wade (MY10), Lachlan Ross
(BK11), Lachlan Holland (MY7), Edward Slater (JR7), Nikolas Verbeek (MK7), Kyle Chant
(VT8), Nathan Fitzpatrick (MY10), Dooley Niemann (BK11) & Jedd Perez (MK9).
Nathan Fitzpatrick (MY10)
The team consisted of Jade Martin (BK1)
(Captain), Aisling McGrath (MK0) (VC),
Holly Burt (MK0), Grace Burt (MK1), Olivia
Pickles (MK1), Gabrielle Smith (JR4)
and Kate Rechter (JR4). The Team was
coached By Mr Barry Nash and Mr Jeremy
Darmody.
The girls, although new to the sport of
Indoor Volleyball, have trained since the
start of February and have improved in
leaps and bounds. The Team had wins over
Weeroona and Eaglehawk and very close
losses to BSE, Girton and East Loddon. All
players improved during the competition
with some great attacking Volleyball.
Mr Barry Nash
Junior Boys Volleyball
After weeks of hard training, the Year 8
Volleyball Team had their day of reckoning
on Tuesday 6 March.
The Team consisted of Christopher Beames
(MY4), Will Brohm (BK3), Harrison Gane
(MY3), Fergus Greene (BK4), Jack Kelly
(MY4), Liam Ly (BK4), Charlie McCormick
(VT3) and Brodie McDonald (VT4).
The boys started with a couple of wins,
which grew the confidence, before
realisation hit with a close fought,
comeback draw against Crusoe College.
They boys finished third on the day,
improving each game, with Harry, Jack
and Chirs being the stand outs. Special
thanks to Geraldine Coles for training the
boys and the Year 9 helpers for umpiring
on the day.

ENGLISH MATTERS
Solariums are disrespectful to the environment as they require
energy to run using up carbon etc, even though we have the
natural resources; natural resources being the sun.
STUDENTS IN VCE ENGLISH (YEARS 11 and 12) HAVE BEEN
UNDERTAKING ASSESSED ORAL PRESENTATIONS IN THEIR
CLASSES IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS. AS YOU CAN IMAGINE
THIS HAS MEANT A LOT OF PREPARATION AND HOURS OF
DILIGENT PRACTISE TO GET THIS ‘JUST RIGHT’.
We should be thankful that we live a place that allows us to
go to the beach and swim, have a picnic and even just see
the sun rise and set. Beautiful! After all, we do have summer
and we should be proud of it; we could be living in England
with limited sunshine, so let’s stop being greedy and use this
to our advantage - safely though!
THIS IS THE SCRIPT PREPARED FOR A RECENT ORAL
PRESENTATION. IT MAKES INTERESTING READING AND
ACCORDING TO THOSE WHO WITNESSED AND HEARD
THIS PRESENTATION, IT WAS A POWERFUL SPEECH WHEN
DELIVERED IN PERSON!
Some people may argue that it is their choice and that they
want to get a solarium. They may be right, but they are also
choosing to buy skin damage. Would you like to purchase
skin damage? I was speaking to a friend recently and he said
to me “If I want to date an oompa loompa, I would just go to
the Willy Wonka factory!”
SOLARIUMS SHOULD BE BANNED!
In 2008, the Victorian Government decided to place new
laws on solariums, banning people with fair skin and people
under the age of 18 from using them. Although, in 2009, a
mystery shopper went to 30 solarium operators in Victoria
and found that 90% failed to comply with at least one new
licence condition and 80% still gave access to minors who
claimed to be 18. Half even allowed fair-skinned people to
fry in these unnecessary machines. Many businesses which
operate solariums have discounted package deals to
promote solariums.
‘Hi English class and Ms Wilson. Today my topic is ‘Should
Victoria ban all Solariums?’ During this oral I am going to
show why I agree.
Early this year the NSW Government legislated the banning
of all solariums across the State by the end of 2014 which
has prompted discussion in all our other States, including
Victoria, to follow in NSW’s footsteps.
Some may be asking themselves, “What exactly is a solarium?’
A solarium may also be referred to as a ‘sun bed’. It is a
dangerous machine that has fitted light tubes which release
concentrated artificial radiation. Solariums are not a safe
way to tan, just like any tan, as you have probably been
taught in the past years. In fact, probably the only safe tan is
a fake one and solariums are not fake!
During youth, body image unfortunately plays an important
role, including, body shape, clothing size and skin colour.
Solariums are basically aimed at the youth market as they
will do anything to look their best and may be ignorant about
the dangers of solariums, and their consequences. It doesn’t
matter if a person has perfect, luscious hair, or perfect skin,
unfortunately some people find it hard to be 100% happy
with what they have.
Just like the natural sun, solariums release UV radiation
although UV radiation from solariums can be up to five times
as strong as the midday summer sun! I thought the natural
sun was dangerous enough!
Most Anglo-Saxon Australians are jealous of other people’s
naturally tanned skin whether they live in Italy or in Indonesia.
However, my sister went over to the Philippines for ‘Alternative
Schoolies’ and came back with a whitening lotion - she
had noticed that people there are jealous over our skin!
This reminds us that no one is ever 100% happy with parts of
their body, wherever they live and we still need to do more
to protect the lives of vulnerable, image-conscious young
people.
Plus, UV radiation can seriously damage skin, harm eyes and
produce cancers. On its own, a solarium can cause burning,
skin irritation, swelling, blistering and pain, premature ageing
of the skin, such as wrinkles and blotches.
Australia has the highest skin cancer incidence rate in the
world and we are four times more likely to develop skin
cancer than any other country. Approximately two in three
Aussies will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the age
of 70. Melanoma is also one of the most common cancers
affecting youth in Australia. These statistics are scary! Many
of our population are dying and hurting from something that
is so preventable; preventable in the fact that one, we should
‘Slip, Slop, Slap’ and, two, we should ban all solariums in
Australia to lessen incidence and prevalence rates.
Some of you may remember the name, Clare Oliver; if not, she
advertised the risk of solariums on an advertisement showing
awareness about skin cancer. She was a user of solariums
at a young age and went 20 times before developing skin
cancer.
Overall, solariums don’t show any positive aspects; they are
just triggering more health problems for Australians. Victoria
needs to do the right thing, follow in NSW’s footsteps and ban
all solariums!
Using a solarium before 35 boosts your risk of melanoma by
75%.

As it is the Year 7 Welcome Mass this week, we felt it only fitting
this week to feature two Year 7 students’ Art works.
In Art, students have been

the
elements
of
design, point, line, shape, colour
and texture. The students have
been investigating these in
relation to practising artists,
and then producing their own

Grace Kelly: Style Icon
This exhibition held at the Bendigo Art Gallery traces Kelly’s life
from her career as a Hollywood actress to her meeting with Prince
Rainier III and their subsequent marriage. Featuring dresses from
such films as High Society as well as the gown she wore to accept
her Oscar in 1955, the exhibition also explores the evolution of her
style as Princess Grace of Monaco, from her extensive wedding
trousseau to her haute couture gowns of the 60s and 70s by
her favourite designers Dior, Balenciaga, Givenchy, and Yves St
Laurent.
William Lomas (MY1)
These pieces were completed
in Mrs Louise Richardson’s
class and completed using
cut card, glue and fine liner.
On Tuesday 13 March, the Art teachers of our College were lucky
enough to attend the teachers’ preview of the Grace Kelly Exhibition
at the Bendigo Art Gallery. The Bendigo Art Gallery encourage all
interested people to come along and view the Exhibition.
Art Excursions
As part of the ‘Season of
Excellence’ program, in the
Charlie Faulks (MY1)
next few weeks Visual and
Performing Arts students
undertaking a VCE course in that field, will be attending either
‘Top Class’, ‘Top Acts’, ‘Top Arts’, or ‘Top Design’ exhibitions of
A+ work from Year 12s in 2011. This will give Visual Arts a great
insight into the standard that their folios and artworks need to
meet. For Performing Arts students, these exhibits will be of great
value, helping them to understand the standard of performance
that must be shown in their VCE Performing Arts subjects.
Afterschool Studio Time (Coolock)
For students studying the Visual Arts, the Art Rooms are now
available for use between 3.30 – 5.30pm on Monday, Tuesday
and Thursday. The Ceramics rooms will also be open for use on
Tuesdays under the supervision of Mr Jason Barnes. This is a
fantastic opportunity for students to work on their folios and pieces
with the help of their Subject Teachers. Monday is supervised by
Miss Michelle Brannagan, Tuesday is supervised by Miss Denae
Trickey and Thursday is supervised by Mr Peter Hughes.
Raw Arts Award Bendigo
The Raw Arts Awards aim to foster the talents and artistic
pursuits of young people in the region. They include a Visual Arts
Acquisitive award, Literary Scholarship, Digital Media Scholarship
and Performing Arts Scholarship. The City of Greater Bendigo is
committed to the development of Arts and Cultural activities; in
particular Youth Arts. This commitment is supported through the

Kew Band Concert
During the Labour Day long weekend Kew Band came up from
Melbourne for a training weekend and to perform a concert at
the Marian Theatre. Kew Band are the current National A-Grade
Champions, and contain a number of Bendigonians including exstudent Matthew Van Emmerik.
The CCB Concert Band were privileged to be a part of a training
day and also performed at the concert, playing alongside Kew
Band and Bendigo Brass Band in a “Massed Band” segment. Our
students were inspired and energised by playing alongside such a
high quality band under the expert musical direction of Mr Mark
Ford. They were exposed to some invaluable musical advice, and
gained an insight into playing in a high quality band. Our thanks
go to Kew Band and Mr Matthew Van Emmerik for organising this
event.

Sustainability news
Instrumental Come and Try
Thursday 8 March was Clean up Catholic College Bendigo Day. Congratulations
to all Houses on their efforts to make a difference to our environment. By
participating in this initiative we have reduced the amount of rubbish that
would otherwise find its way into our waterways and forests. Congratulations to
MacKillop House at Coolock and Vincent House at La Valla for collecting the
rubbish!
Sustainable seafood day – 16 March
Friday 16 March is Sustainable Seafood Day and is your
chance to help celebrate and reward wild-caught
fisheries that have been independently proven to
be sustainable fisheries. There are four MSC certified
fisheries in Australia. Well managed and sustainable
fishing is essential for healthy oceans and economies
worldwide. Our oceans are under more pressure than
ever from human and environmental impacts. Look for
the label to ensure our oceans remain healthy!
Week
Next week at La Valla we will be holding
an instrumental ‘Come and Try’ week. Any
student interested in learning a musical
instrument is invited to come to the Music
Room (Room 12) at lunchtime to “Come
and Try” one out with the guidance of our
Instrumental Teachers.
We will be offering Guitar, Bass, Drums,
Piano, Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone,
Clarinet and Flute. If you are interested in
learning one of these instruments, come
along for a test drive. Any questions contact
Ms Denise Halliday in the Office or Mr
Simon Darlow.
This year students with enquiries about IMP
Tuition at Coolock are asked to contact Mrs
Cathy Moore or Miss Ingrid Thomson
who will help arrange lessons.
