Students inspired by
motivational speaker
Students and staff at South
Staffordshire College were truly
inspired by the visit of Steve
Cunningham, the world’s fastest
blind man. Steve was invited
to talk to students about his
fantastic achievements as part
of the College’s newly launched
Speaker Programme.
Described as, “the most inspirational
man alive”, Steve told his audience about
his journey from despair to success, having
gone blind at the age of 12. He holds the
world record as the fastest blind man on
land and sea and works with schools
and businesses around the UK to help
motivate and inspire people to achieve
their own potential.
Accompanied by his support team and
his faithful dog, Foster, Steve ran two
motivational seminars and an afternoon
Spring 2012
of workshops, meeting hundreds of staff
and students at Rodbaston, Cannock and
Tamworth campuses.
IT student Alex Parry said, “It was an
excellent opportunity to show that there
are no barriers if you really push yourself.”
Fellow student Dan Fryer was just as
impressed, “Steve sets a great example to
students and proves that if you believe in
yourself and commit, you can succeed.”
Trudie McGuinness, Director of Learner
Experience said, “Steve Cunningham is a
truly inspirational man. We are delighted
that he and his team could spend the
day with us as part of our ongoing guest
speaker programme. We want all of our
students at South Staffordshire College to
achieve their full potential, which they are
encouraged to do by meeting exceptional
individuals such as Steve Cunningham.”

Turning negatives
into positives
After listening to Steve
Cunningham’s story here at
The Source we wanted to really
see how this inspiration affected
other South Staffordshire
College students, so we spoke
to another student to see if
a negative can be turned
into a positive.
“I never really enjoyed school as I found
many of the core subjects boring and
difficult, although I really liked P.E as I was
good at it. As expected, I failed Math’s and
Science but just about passed English.
At first my results didn’t bother me until I
realised I would need Math’s and definitely
Science in the future, as I wanted to study
Sport at college. Suddenly, my mind set
changed with my goal to study Sport. I
listed ways that would help me to succeed
in passing Maths and Science, so I decided
to get a tutor to help me retake my exams
and achieve a pass.
• Believe in yourself. Do not expect
anything but good results by aiming
high, you can achieve
• Set yourself goals to help boost
self-esteem
• Instead of concentrating on eliminating
bad habits, concentrate on creating
good habits.
Once you replace negativity with positive
thoughts, you’ll start getting positive results!
Words: Lucy Notorantonio.
My tutor taught me on a regular basis
which did mean I couldn’t spend as much
time as I wanted with my friends, but I
listened, studied and focused my mind
on that end goal of passing my exams
and the hard work paid off. I really can’t
thank my tutor enough, he is the reason
I passed my exams and am now
studying a subject I excel at and
that I really enjoy. If I hadn’t passed
Science I wouldn’t have been
able to be the Gymnastics coach
that I am today.”
Here are some tips from The Source on
how to have a more positive view on life
and see if you get the same results as our
case study,
•
Replace all negative thoughts with
positive ones by thinking of happy
thoughts. Eventually you’ll be able to
ignore all negativity, if you are persistent
• Look at the benefits in every situation
to persuade yourself to push to the limit

Students cook up
a storm for charity
Catering students from South Staffordshire
College’s Cannock Campus have received
recognition for their contributions to the Cannock
Chase District Council’s premier charity fundraiser,
The Chairman’s Ball.
adding, “I enjoyed working on a larger function than I am used
to and am happy that I could be part of raising money for
a worthy cause.”
The event took on a 1940’s war time theme and the students
cooked and presented food from that era to a good reception,
with the council receiving lots of positive comments about the
quality of the food and its presentation.
The Council’s chairman, John Beddows, visited the College’s
Gordon’s Restaurant at Cannock Campus to personally thank
the ten students who provided the catering for the fundraiser. He
presented certificates and vouchers to Sian Mace, Holly Howdle,
Payge Goodfellow, Charlotte Hughes, Chloe Edwards, Ellie
Marsh, Anton Crawford-Dowe, Tommy Reynolds, Caitlin Platt and
Jonathon Drew. Anton commented, “I worked in the kitchen for
the function and although it was extremely hard work, it taught
me how rewarding catering can be by being part of an event and
assisting others at the same time.” College tutor Karen Bell, said
the students really benefited from the experience with Sian Mace

College gives students
Olympic opportunities
2012 is a big year for a number of reasons, but
perhaps the biggest thing to happen in the United
Kingdom is that the world’s largest sporting event
is being staged in London. The 2012 Olympic
Games are being hosted by our great nation and
South Staffordshire College is backing the games
by becoming part of the Get Set Network. This
is a special community of schools and colleges
in the United Kingdom that aims to inspire
students of all ages and ability to get involved
in value-based projects and activities.
Trudie McGuinness, Director of Learner Experience at South
Staffordshire College is confident that students and tutors can
benefit from the scheme, “Built around the Olympic and Paralympic
values, the projects will encourage young people to play an active
part in their own learning, to develop leadership skills and to
challenge themselves to try new things.”
The Olympic Games will grip the entire nation during the summer
of 2012 and the games stand for many values – respect, friendship,
equality, excellence, inspiration, courage and determination – these
reflect the qualities that South Staffordshire College instill in their
students to set them on the path towards fulfilling their ambitions.
Words: Danny Wright
Students across the four campuses will take part in a large range
of activities during the run up to the Olympics. Included in this is
the opportunity to achieve a L2 Stewarding qualification, which will
allow students to apply to be a steward at the games.

A new primate
is welcomed
to Rodbaston
South Staffordshire College’s
animal keepers are proud to
introduce a brand new primate
to the Animal Zone at Rodbaston
Campus; a male pygmy slow
loris. The primate, named Bao
(‘protection’ in Vietnamese) was
born at London Zoo in 2011 and
has been donated to the College
from Paignton Zoo. He has
settled in well to the reverse light
nocturnal room at Rodbaston
Campus and has completed
his quarantine period.
The pygmy slow loris is a very rare species
of primate and is found in the tropical dry
forests of Vietnam, Laos and parts of China
and Cambodia. Their conservation status is
vulnerable which means the species in the
wild are threatened by habitat destruction
and the wildlife trade.
The loris species was nearly wiped out
through extensive forestry removal and
Spring 2012
was on the brink of extinction during
the Vietnam War, but through controlled
breeding programmes and conservation
projects the species has been kept
alive and well.
Vicky Kirkman, Senior Keeper of Primates
at South Staffordshire College, hopes that
the future will be bright for Bao, with the
potential to locate a female slow loris for
breeding purposes.
“The slow loris is rarely seen in zoos
and our students will benefit greatly,
getting actively involved in the day-to-day
husbandry of the loris and contributing to
the scientific knowledge on the species
through research observations,” Vicky
said. “We are hoping to include Bao in
a breeding programme which will allow
students to observe the introductions
to a female loris, to watch the pregnancy
develop and help with the youngsters’
diet formulation, diet preparation
and observations.”

Lambing season
takes off with a
leap at Rodbaston
The College has enjoyed an
excellent start to the lambing
season, with a set of twin lambs
heralding the first arrivals.
The farm at Rodbaston Campus has
220 expectant sheep and following the
scanning results earlier in the year is
anticipating 34 sets of triplets, 146 sets of
twins and 40 single births, making a total
of around 400 lambs expected in the
next few weeks.
Farming staff and Agriculture students
will be providing 24 hour care to the new
mums and their offspring, in what is one
of the busiest in the farm’s calendar with
the College also holding two Lambing
weekends at the Animal Centre, on 17th
/18th March and 24th/25th March. Visitors
will be able to get up close and personal
with the new arrivals, feeding and stroking
the lambs and welcoming the 36 new
calves expected from the Suckler cow
herd in early March. Rodbaston farm
manager, Jon Giles, is looking forward to
welcoming families again this year, saying,
“The experience gained by the farm staff
and students is important in the welfare
and caring of the animals and we all look
forward to the lambing weekends. It’s
always very rewarding to see how much
pleasure children and adults alike get
through the close interaction with the farm
animals and all the hard work behind the
scenes is worth it to see their faces.”

Air
Le Voyage Dans La Lune
Lamb of God
Resolution
Lana Del Rey
Born to Die
Le Voyage Dans La Lune (A Trip to the Moon
in English), is a classic silent film released
in 1902 by French director George Méliès. It
is widely considered to be the first ever sci-fi
film, and as such, it has been treated as one
of the most important and influential works
in cinema history. Over one hundred years
later, the film has been restored and is now
showing at film festivals worldwide, this time
with a soundtrack. This is where Air come in.
The electronica duo were tasked with writing
a new original score for this new version
of the film. Being French and sci-fi fanatics
themselves, this was no doubt an honour,
but at the same time a massive responsibility.
How do you make a soundtrack to a silent
film, not to mention do justice to such an
important work of art?
Since the late ‘90s, Lamb of God have grown
from small beginnings to become one of the
most beloved heavy metal bands of the 21st
Century. In 2012 they release their seventh
album ‘Resolution’. Do the southern hell
raisers still have it?
Born to Die is the major label debut album
by Elizabeth Grant, better known as Lana Del
Rey. Since her unveiling back in June 2011
with her single ‘Video Games’ the hype for
‘Born to Die’ went through the roof. It’s here
now and going straight for the charts, taking
on the pop divas, indie groups and boy bands
currently dominating. How does it fair?
Don’t let this association with the film put you
off though - you don’t need any knowledge of
the film to get any enjoyment out of the album.
Regardless of its cinematic context, Le Voyage
works just as well as a stand-alone piece as
it does a soundtrack. That said, when it truly
succeeds is when they are watched as one.
Despite being mostly instrumental, when
watched in conjunction with the film the two
combine brilliantly to create a fantastic sense
of adventure and discovery, Air’s music
perfectly complementing the scenes to
which they correspond.
The record utilises a vast multitude of
instruments, from traditional guitars to piano,
mellotron, harpsichord, string sections, organ
bass and much more to create a genuine sense
of adventure, discovery and mystery all while
soothing the ears with beautiful melodies and
atmospheric touches. Simply put, Le Voyage
Dans La Lune, is a truly multi-dimensional,
ethereal creation that may be somewhat of a
niche listen, but a masterfully crafted one
at that, and an enthralling work of art.
If you’ve ever heard Lamb of God before, you’ll
know they don’t rely on subtlety, opting for a
thick wall-of-sound approach which proceeds to
batter your eardrums. You’d be a fool to expect
anything less of Lamb of God, to be honest since they began they’ve had a reputation for
being heavy and savage, even as they’ve gone
on to become global superstars, it’s always
been clear from the start that Lamb of
God don’t compromise.
While there are few surprises on Resolution,
the first one is in the form of opening number
‘Straight for the Sun’. A much slower affair than
what we’re used to hearing from the band, it is
nevertheless menacingly heavy. It’s not long
before normality is restored though - following
are singles ‘Desolation’ and ‘Ghost Walking’,
which showcase the return of Lamb of God’s
familiar style.
There are interesting turns here and there but
on the whole it’s very much a matter - of if it
isn’t broke, don’t fix it - but that’s not to say
they’ve become the metal AC/DC. ‘Cheated’
shows off their hardcore punk influences, while
‘Insurrection’ features clean singing, a first for
the band. Easily the biggest surprise here is the
album’s finale, ‘King Me’. An epic composition
with an orchestra and a female singer, it’s easily
the most adventurous thing the band has
done to date.
Born to Die opts to use soft string sections and
hypnotic trip-hop beats over dance-pop synths
and auto-tuned vocal hooks, and her soulful
soprano voice is more in line with the likes of
Adele or Björk than Katy Perry or Nicki Minaj.
This approach means it isn’t as fun as her radiobothering peers, and you aren’t going to hear
‘Dark Paradise’ or ‘Summertime Sadness’ in a
club any time soon, but at the same time sounds
fresh and actually quite inventive. It’s not quite
as immediate; songs might not even click until
a second or third listen, possibly even more.
However, traditional pop fans may find comfort
in ‘National Anthem’ or ‘Off to the Races’, which
sound much ‘bigger’ and catchier than the rest,
although people looking for the next Rihanna or
Lady Gaga are best looking elsewhere entirely.
You won’t find songs about partying, sex or
money here. In fact, the subject matter on
Born to Die is actually pretty dark for a pop
record. Topics covered include death, sadness
and dark romance, among other similarly sombre
subjects, adding a limit to her appeal but also
challenging pop conventions which is worth
a nod, even if it does come off as overly dreary
or even pretentious at times.
There’s plenty here for their established
enthusiasts to treat their ears with, but those
looking for innovation should look elsewhere.
Resolution is far from a poor record, it just
feels like another day on the job.
Safe to say it’s not an easy album. The songs
tend to be driven more by Del Rey’s elegant voice
over instrumentation which takes a back seat
here, but still acting as the vessel that carries her,
creating a dramatic atmosphere that gives Born
to Die an air of class and graceful sophistication
that most modern pop records lack. You could
say it’s an album to fall asleep to.

Van Halen
A Different Kind of Truth
Young Guns
Bones
New albums from classic rock bands have
always been a bit of a grey area - sometimes
they work, but most often the result is either
a complete mess or just “okay” and screams
of a bunch of old-timers trying to reclaim
greatness that has long since gone. No one
could blame you for expecting little of a
new Van Halen album. After all, the albums
released between original singer David Lee
Roth’s departure in 1984 and his return in
2006 have ranged from mediocre to absolute
rubbish. This is just destined to fail, right?
Since their inception in 2003 London’s
Young Guns have been a rising contender
on the flourishing British rock scene. Their
2010 debut, All Our Kings Are Dead, was
a promising taste of success for the Brits,
introducing them to the world as potentially
the next big name in the British rock
establishment, following hot on the trails of
Lostprophets and Biffy Clyro. Now they move
on to album number two, and the Londoners
are ready to take on the big league. Where
All Our Kings Are Dead suggested, Bones
delivers. It’s a big, bold rock record that aims
high and doesn’t settle for second best.
This is the quartet’s first album with David since
1984. Unlike a lot of comeback albums that feel
lazy and uninspired, looking for a quick buck
and lacking any kind of passion, A Different
Kind of Truth is an admirable return to form
and reinvigorates their sound with plenty of
swagger and a sense of attitude that a lot of
bands from that era lost a long time ago. The
fact that they’re getting on a bit is obvious; this
most evident in Roth’s voice, but 20-year-old
bassist Wolfgang Van Halen may very well
have injected them with the youthful spirit they
needed to avoid “old man rock” territory.
The album’s not without its faults though; this
is to be expected from a reunited ‘70s rock
band. Songs like ‘Tattoo’ border on barber
shop-levels of cheesiness and David simply
cannot scream anymore, while ‘Stay Frosty’
has a country-infused butt-rock and is just plain
awful, not least due to Roth’s continued “uh,
uh”s that’ll make a sane person want to
remove their ears from their heads.
There are strong songs though; ‘As Is’, ‘She’s
the Woman’, ‘Outta Space’ and ‘Bullethead’ to
name a few, nothing that could possibly stand
toe-to-toe with cast-iron classics like ‘Jump’ or
‘Eruption’, obviously, but maybe that’s asking
too much. For what it is - the band’s first album
in fourteen years, and their first in twenty-eight
with their original singer - it’s impressive, if a
little rusty in places.
For Fans of: KISS, The Darkness, Def Leppard.
Rating:
Opening number ‘I Was Born, I Have Lived, I
Will Surely Die’ is a fist-pumping call-to-arms
with a colossal chorus in which front man Gustav
Wood pleads, “Don’t run away, take a shot, give
it everything you’ve got / Without pain, what’s
the point of glory?”. This is just one of many bold
statements and tattoo able lyrics to be found on
Bones. Songs on Bones deal with some heavy
personal topics, such as overcoming self-doubt
(the title track) and the inherent losses that come
with growing up and looking back on childhood
memories (the album’s finale, the sombre yet
beautiful ‘Broadfields’).
It’s not easy to turn emotional subjects into
soaring rock songs that youngsters will
cherish as the generation before them did with
Lostprophets and Foo Fighters, but Young Guns
manage to hit that sweet spot between emotional
and motivational. This record will be just as
important for the fans as it is for the band.
The songs on Bones are clearly designed for
big crowds and big sales. ‘Dearly Departed’ is
a pure anthem in the making, while the singles
‘Learn My Lesson’ and the title track are already
receiving heavy radio rotation. The fact of the
matter is this band are far from arena-conquering
behemoths just yet, but they know their way
around a good hook and 2012 will see them
grow from strength to strength, soon becoming
one of the UK’s brightest rock stars.

Music
Top 10 bestselling artists of all time!
1 – The Beatles (1.5 billion)
2 – Elvis Presley (1 billion)
3 – Michael Jackson (750 million)
With estimated record sales of 1 billion
worldwide, 15 number one albums and the
domination of the 60’s with ‘Beatlemania’,
it’s not hard to see why the fab four topped
our list. Inspiring hundreds of rock, pop and
indie bands, John Lennon, Paul McCartney,
Ringo Starr and George Harrison were
just four ordinary working class lads
from Liverpool who worked their way
through the gig circuit with a collection of
memorable hits including, ‘Hey Jude’, ‘She
Loves You’ and ‘All You Need Is Love’ to
become the most well-known and influential
band of all time. The Beatles’ dominance in
the music scene is still profound today.
The original King of Rock and Roll, Elvis
Presley completely revolutionised the
music charts in the 50’s with his risqué
dancing and deep, throbbing vocals. Aside
from his bejeweled costumes and rigid
quiff, Elvis’ hits include, ‘Suspicious Minds’
and ‘Little Less Conversation’, which are
still played frequently 60 years on and he
has his own multi-million shrine built in his
hometown of Memphis named Graceland.
King of Pop Michael Jackson was the master
of the 1980’s, reforming the music video,
creating a turnaround for black musicians
and producing the bestselling album of all
time (Thriller has sold 102 million copies).
If that wasn’t enough, Jacko also donated
$300,000,000 to charity and gave us the
dance phenomenon that is the moonwalk,
along with classics such as ‘Billie Jean’ and
his motown hits with The Jackson 5.
4 – Madonna (350 million)
5 – Elton John (320 million)
6 – Led Zeppelin (310 million)
Her ‘Madgesty’ (or Madge as she is more
affectionately known), is still the style
chameleon she was in the mid 80’s. The
crucifix-swallowing, leotard-wearing
‘material girl’ may be getting on a bit now,
but there is no denying that the original
Queen of Pop can reinvent herself like no
other. She is also the only musician to have
had seven consecutive number ones in the
Billboard Hot 100. Who’s Lady Gaga again?
You’d never associate Rocket Man Elton,
with his outrageous specs, flamboyant
piano playing and sharp tongue as the
guy who wrote the soundtrack for Disney
classic, The Lion King, and dedicated
his hit, “Candle in the Wind” to Princess
Diana at her funeral. But with a collective
of 6 Grammy Awards, 4 Brit Awards, an
Academy Award and many more, it seems
very unlikely Elton John’s accomplishments
and work will be forgotten.
Wild-haired Robert Plant and his high
pitched, paint-peeling yowl formed Led
Zeppelin in the early 70’s when rock music
ruled with an iron fist. Their melodic more
commercial sounding anthems put them
in huge demand and filled stadiums. Their
second album, Led Zeppelin II, has been
certified platinum more than 12 times.
Managing to cross wide gapped genres,
‘Kashmir’ has been frequented in many
classical performances and who can
forget School of Rock?

7 – Queen (300 million)
8 – ABBA (260 million)
9 – Mariah Carey (210 million)
Queen may not be the champions this time
round, but leading man Freddie Mercury
and his cohorts have certainly secured their
place in pop history. Take performances
such as Live Aid and it’s clear this iconic
band can do no wrong. Churning out hit
after hit, Queen has sold a total of 200
million records and are the inspiration
for many of today’s eccentric stars. The
band recently announced that they will be
headlining this year’s Sonisphere Festival
at Knebworth Park, (the same venue
where the band played their final gig with
Freddie), this summer with American singer
Adam Lambert performing vocals.
Swedish pop quartet ABBA are not only
one of the most successful pop groups
ever they are the most successful act
to ever come out of Eurovision! With a
musical movie dedicated to their catchy
music, ABBA’s music has proven to be
the ultimate nostalgic guilty pleasure
worldwide. Their best-selling hit ‘Fernando’
has sold more than 10 million copies alone.
Warbling pop diva Mariah was almost
unrecognisable back in the early 90’s with her
shy demeanor, permed hair and slight frame.
The Mariah now is curvaceous, demanding
and covered in bling. But there is one thing
that remains: the voice. Despite her diva
antics, Mariah’s lack of gimmicks and vocal
acrobatics left audiences screaming in awe.

What’s it like to
be a lookalike?
Cheryl Cole
Halima Moin
At our enrolment event at Lichfield Campus
open day last September, students and visitors
had the opportunity of having their picture taken
with Cheryl Cole lookalike Halima Moin. The
resemblance between the nation’s sweetheart
Cheryl and down-to-earth Halima was uncanny
and before long an orderly queue formed to pose
alongside the petite doppelganger.
Halima, whose previous work has included publicity shots for
various magazines and the comedic Cheryl Cole book, Woath it?
Coase Ah Em Pet, was more than happy for a quick interview
with me about her life posing as our favourite Geordie.
You’ve been working as a Cheryl Cole lookalike for the past
two years now, what is the best/worst thing about this job?
“I can honestly say a lot more good has come from having
a resemblance to Cheryl than bad. I mean, it’s definitely not
a bad thing. “
Definitely not. Can you sing like Cheryl?
(Laughs) “Only in the shower and the water has to be cold
enough for me to hit the notes in Fight for This Love.”
“No, it never occurred to me. It was only when an agent
approached me that I considered doing it. Trust me; a lot of
preparation goes underway to look like her.”
What is your favourite Cheryl song?
“My favourite will always be ‘Promise This’, but saying that,
I also love Yeah Yeah with Travie McCoy. I actually can’t wait
for her new material to come out.”
In terms of style, do you find it hard keeping
to Cheryl’s image?
“Not really. A lot of high street stores stock similar clothes
to hers and I have a really good hairdresser as well! River
Island is absolutely brilliant to go to, it always has everything.”
Well, Cheryl is obviously really slim; do you find it hard
maintaining her figure?
“Well luckily, I’m genetically slim anyway, so I don’t have
that much of a problem.”
Lucky you! Are there any other similarities between
you and Cheryl?
“Smoking! All I need now is the Geordie accent.”
“I’ve been a fan of Cheryl ever since she was in ‘Pop stars:
The Rivals’ way back in 2002. Even then people would say we
looked alike. I just love how down-to-earth she is.”
Do you or someone you know look like a famous celebrity
or character? Let us know and you could appear in our next
issue! Let us know by sending an e-mail with your name,

Rising Stars
Performing Arts students
setting high standards
Performing Arts students at Lichfield Campus
have been working hard on productions.
On the 8th of February first year students performed a production called
‘Principles of Acting’, which contains various different scenes from plays
and musicals of multiple generations and acting styles. Within six weeks
students had to learn four separate pieces: a Shakespearean extract, a
comedy sketch and two musical numbers; one as a duet and the other
as a group number. Students had to work hard at rehearsals to learn
their lines and the dance choreography as well as developing their
characters. Performing Arts lecturer and course leader Emily Humble
commented, “The show was intended to help develop the students
acting and performance skills in a variety of styles, something which I
think they would all agree is incredibly valuable to them. Our students get
involved with a lot of local productions at the Garrick Theatre. We also
recently had a year two student, Lewis Sanders, go to London to study a
BA (Hons) in Musical Theatre at the Mountview Theatre Academy, where
he will be tutored by professionals. Their standards are incredibly high
and if he does well he will be on course to a career in the West End.”
The students are currently working on their end-of-year production
of Lewis Carroll’s, Alice in Wonderland, which was written, directed
and performed by the second year students. The production will be
performed to friends, family and the general public on Tuesday 12th
June at the Lichfield Garrick Theatre at both 2.30pm and 7.30pm.
Tickets will be available from the Garrick Box Office in April.

Gadgets
The best future
gadgets of 2012...
iPad 3
It’s no surprise that the iPad 3 is your most wanted future
gadget of 2012. From the moment Apple launched the iPad 2,
iPad 3 speculation has been in serious overdrive.
An eye-slicing sharp 10in screen, a quad-core A6 processor and a carbon fibre
case, are just some of the rumoured specs for the iPad 3 that could see it setting
the benchmark standard for tablets once again. Previous iPad launches point to a
February or March release, so we’re hoping it’ll be putting in an appearance very soon.
PS Vita
Named the “PS3 in your pocket,” PlayStation’s
next-generation PS VITA handheld is a pocket
gaming powerhouse. With a quad-core ARM
9 processor feeding a 5inch OLED touch
screen, a tactile back panel and dual cameras
for augmented reality gaming, one thing is
clear – Sony mean business.
However, have we all moved on to gaming on smart phones
from Apple, Samsung and the competitors? We’ll find out
next month when the PS VITA touches down in the UK.

The Windows Phone
Its Windows Phone 7-style Metro UI offers
a new level of interactivity for both PC and
tablet users, promising an abundance of
new features like Kinect for Windows for
movement based control, HTML5 applications
which will make full use of online cloud
services – a clear sign Microsoft is taking its
tablet efforts very seriously this time around.
Galaxy S II
Now, with the Galaxy S II almost approaching
its first birthday, word on the virtual street
suggests its successor – the appropriately
named Galaxy S III – will come complete with
a quad-core engine, 2GB of RAM, a 4.6in
screen and a whopping 12MP camera.
Rumours expect the Galaxy S III to be revealed in
May – and we expect it to be the best galaxy yet.
iPhone 5
It’s fair to say there was widespread
disappointment among Apple fans when Apple
lifted the lid on the iPhone 4S as opposed to
the iPhone 5 we were all secretly hoping for.
September could see the release of what feels like an overdue
handset, but considering there was a 16-month gap between
the release of the iPhone 4 and 4S – throwing a spanner into
the traditional summer release pattern – Apple may not be
gunning to release an iPhone 5 so soon after the last model.

Can England Break the Curse?
Sports fans across the
world have a lot to watch this
summer. The Olympic Games in
London and also the European
Championships being held in
Poland and Ukraine, which will
grip nations across Europe and
the rest of the world. There is
one question on everyone’s lips
in England and that is, “Can
England win the Euros?!”
England has never won the European
Championships, but in recent history
the cup has been won by two smaller
contenders, Denmark (1992) and Greece
(2004). You can never rule out the smaller
fish in the European Championships, and
this year the team that, in my opinion,
should have been at the 2010 World Cup,
the Republic of Ireland will have to give
their all after drawing Spain (2 time winners
and holders), Italy (1 time winners) and
Croatia in their group.
In all tournaments there is a group of death
and the luck of the Irish wasn’t in the air
in Kiev when the groups were drawn in
December. However, the luck may have
been with the English, who are drawn
Spring 2012
alongside Sweden, co-hosts Ukraine
and recent underachievers France.
Although now without a manager can
the three lions have a tournament to
make our nation proud?
Whoever the next England manager is
they have to pick the correct squad. I
believe that England can get seven points
from the group stage and so will France;
it will just be a matter of who gets a better
goal difference to see who will top the
group. Either way, England will come up
against the winner or runner-up of Group
C, which means whoever England play it
will be tough as they could find themselves
contending with Spain, Italy, Croatia
or the Republic of Ireland.
It will be interesting to see if Wayne Rooney
will make the England squad after having
his ban reduced to two matches after the
FA appealed his three match ban. He won’t
be playing France and Sweden, but he will
be very much available against Ukraine,
which in my opinion, will be the toughest
game of the group as these dark horses
will be playing in front of their own fans.
Additionally, Phil Jones will be vital to
England’s success in the Euros. Lining
up alongside John Terry in the centre
of defence and Aaron Lennon’s quality
displays at Spurs this season could see
him become one of the key figures in the
midfield, as he has that injection of pace
about him which could push teams far back
into their own half. The next manager will
probably have to call upon some of the old
boys; Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole, Steven
Gerrard and John Terry will probably all be
in the squad. Some of the new boys we
should be looking at are Kyle Walker, Phil
Jones, Jack Rodwell, Danny Sturridge and
Danny Welbeck. I would be surprised if
we didn’t see these future prospects in the
England team at Brazil 2014.
So, can England really win the European
Championships? Every year the nation
thinks we could do it and the lads seem
to underperform even against the worst
of sides (Algeria and USA, 2010). In my
honest, and pessimistic, opinion, England
will be lucky to get past the quarter finals.
Whether it is Spain, Italy or Croatia I
don’t think we will win. The teams to
really challenge this year have to be
Spain or Germany. We all know about
the Spaniard’s grip on world football, but
Germany has a real chance of winning their
fourth European Championships.
