‘Let the Children Sing’ at St John's
"All the world's a stage” is the phrase that begins a monologue from William Shakespeare's As
You Like It, spoken by the melancholy Jaques in Act II Scene VII. The speech compares the world
to a stage and life to a play, and catalogues the seven stages of a man's life…
Fitting to draw on inspiration from the “Bard”, as our boys will be performing their major production “Pirates of the Curry Bean” this term. Look out for the advertising of this event which
promises to entertain One and All… Moreover, just as man has seven stages in Shakespeare’s
“All the world’s a stage”, our boys have various stages and roles to play within their prep journey.
In broad terms, our pupils enter in Grade 3 and exit in Grade 7 having played their part, however, we can add that they all play a mini entrance and exit on a termly basis as they prepare
themselves for new roles within the various changes in our sporting and cultural codes.
We have one direct contrast to the Bard who refers: “And then the whining school-boy, with his
satchel And shining morning face, creeping like snail Unwillingly to school”. Our boys have
started the term, (their new role) with passion and gusto in the classroom and on the sports
field (on the stage). They arrive with the shining morning faces, lunch box and satchel, not like
snail but more like energised bees, willingly performing another Act / Scene in their Boys’ Prep
play.
What a pleasure it is for staff who daily witness our boys playing
their part. Furthermore, we thank all our parents who continually
play their part in the “Boys’ Prep Theatre”. Term Two will no doubt
be a successful term where change will be mandatory and growth
will follow. The Prep Junior Choir had their own ‘special entry’ as
they performed extremely well singing at St John's on Monday
evening. They formed part of a programme of four schools and
joined the massed choir items with enthusiasm and a sense of
fun. View the link for a heart warming clip of young stars https://youtu.be/uAd7L1yw9PQ

A Methodist School making a world of difference
From the Desk of our Chaplain
Pentecost has come and gone.
I often wonder how the early disciples felt when they experienced the Holy Spirit descending on
them. What an experience it must have been.
But what is Pentecost and how should we respond to this amazing event as an educational institution?
With the space provided, I will attempt to ……….briefly, reflect on what Pentecost is, its origin
and its significance to us here at Saints.
What is Pentecost?
For Christians, Pentecost is a day on which we commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit on
the early followers of Jesus. Before the events of the first Pentecost, which came a few weeks
after Jesus’ death and resurrection, there were followers of Jesus, but no movement that could
be meaningfully called “the church.” Thus, from an historical point of view, Pentecost is the day
on which the church was started. This is also true from a spiritual perspective, since the Spirit
brings the church into existence and enlivens it. Thus Pentecost is the church’s birthday.
In essence, Pentecost means God’s equipping God’s church with the power of the Holy Spirit
so that God will be glorified among the nations.
Pentecost – its “origins””
The English word “Pentecost” is a transliteration of the Greek word pentekostos, which means
“fifty.” It comes from the ancient Christian expression pentekoste hemera, which means
“fiftieth day.”
If you go back and read the Old Testament, you will discover that Pentecost was one of the Jewish feast days. Only they didn't call it Pentecost. That's the Greek name. The Jews called it the
Feast of Harvest or the Feast of Weeks. It is mentioned in five places in the first five books—in
Exodus 23, Exodus 24, Leviticus 16, Leviticus 23, Number 28, and Deuteronomy 16.
The Book of Leviticus 23:15
‘And you shall count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you
brought the sheaf of the wave offering: seven Sabbaths shall be completed. Count fifty days
to the day after the seventh Sabbath; then you shall offer a new grain offering to the LORD.
You shall bring from your dwellings two wave loaves of two-tenths of an ephah. They shall
be of fine flour; they shall be baked with leaven. They are the first fruits to the LORD. And
you shall offer with the bread seven lambs of the first year, without blemish, one young bull,
and two rams. They shall be as a burnt offering to the LORD, with their grain offering and
their drink offerings, an offering made by fire for a sweet aroma to the LORD. Then you shall
sacrifice one kid of the goats as a sin offering, and two male lambs of the first year as a sacrifice of a peace offering. The priest shall wave them with the bread of the first fruits as a
wave offering before the LORD, with the two lambs. They shall be holy to the LORD for the
priest”
During the Jewish Feast of Pentecost people were to give up an offering of their first fruits, new
grain harvested, and also the regular burnt offerings.
The significance of Pentecost for us:
What I find so amazing is that it was while people were celebrating and giving that the Holy Spirit came upon them. It reminds me that we are to give and not count the cost, and when we do
that we are blessed beyond measure.
As Christians, we are unified in a firm belief that the one God is the Creator who gives life to all
that is. The one God is also the Saviour of all life. We know this, and we want to share this good
news with all. Our Saviour, Jesus Christ, gives us solid ground for hope – for this world and for
the world to come. But knowing is not enough. There must also be inspiration and commitment.
That was given on Pentecost by the triune God through the Holy Spirit, when the apostles spoke
to all those people assembled in Jerusalem, with their very different backgrounds, cultures and
languages. And the listeners heard, each of them in their “own native language”!
For me, and I believe for us here at Saints, the simple message of Pentecost is and should be –
that irrespective of our race, our nationality, our language, our gender, our economic status,
our…………………….. we are ONE, diverse in who and what we present but unified in our striving
towards the Saints Charter, with its injunction to:
Honour God. Honour Others. Honour Self.
We are further challenged by Article 8 in our Statement on Spirituality to
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all
your mind”. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: “Love
your neighbour as yourself”.’ (Matthew 22: 37-39)
“Prayer” for the school community.
Please pray for the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, who will be holding the 2016
Annual District Synod here at St Stithians from 26 to 28 May. We will have a Family Service on
Sunday 29 May in the Chapel and our District Bishop, Rev. Gary Rivas, will share the Message
with us. All are welcome.
“GREASED LIGHTNING!”
Earlier this year 9 boys were selected to dance in the
opening scene of, “Grease”. We have been practising
extremely hard and we are very confident that our
dance moves will be a huge hit! It is a real honour for
us, as no other junior school boys or girls have been
selected to dance. We are very thankful for this opportunity to be in “Grease” and hope to see you there!
“It’s GREASED LIGHTNING!”
