RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Sensing Inspiration
Debbie Rosas, Nia CEO + Founder
From the moment you take your first breath, ‘til the moment you take the last one,
your body breathes you via an amazing system called the respiratory system.
All living creatures share one thing, breathing. In
a human body, it is called respiration. Your body’s
respiratory system provides life-giving oxygen to all
your cells. Oxygen breaks down glucose (sugars) from
the food you eat and releases it as energy, so you can
do what you want, when you want. Think of respiration
as taking place in two stages. Stage one, gas
exchange, is where the transfer of oxygen and carbon
dioxide occurs between the outside atmosphere and
inside your lungs. Stage two, cellular respiration, is
where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide
occurs between your blood and metabolically active
tissues. The in and out of breath is what every cell
in your body depends on to sustain the right kind of
balance between oxygen in and carbon dioxide out.
Achieve good in and out and your body will have a
good chance of sustaining health. So how do you make
breathing happen? You don’t. From the moment you

Healthy
A healthy respiratory system means you can
efficiently breathe in to add oxygen and breathe out
to remove carbon dioxide from your body’s cells. It
means you can physically do what you want to do
with dynamic ease and comfort.
Unhealthy
An unhealthy respiratory system means you cannot
efficiently breathe in to add oxygen and breathe out
to remove carbon dioxide from your body’s cells. It
means you cannot physically act without experiencing
shortness of breath, fatigue, and discomfort. Having
an unhealthy respiratory system can mean living with
the diseases of cystic fibrosis, asthma, emphysema,
pulmonary hypertension, and/or pneumonia.

Debbie says:
I perceive my spirit as the all-embracing unique element
that makes me the person I am. I perceive breath as the
life-force energy that flows through me, the stuff that
connects me to all that is. It’s a gift I was given at birth
that breathed life into me, the elixir that awakened in me,
life in a body, one of human flesh, mind, heart, and spirit.
I allow the world to breathe me, and in turn, I breathe in
the magic of the world around me. In doing so, I become
one with all that is. How does it all happen? Only the body
truly knows.
