All living creatures share one thing, breathing. In a human body, it is called respiration. Your body’s respiratory system provides life-giving oxygen to all your cells. Oxygen breaks down glucose (sugars) from the food you eat and releases it as energy, so you can do what you want, when you want. Think of respiration as taking place in two stages. Stage one, gas exchange, is where the transfer of oxygen and carbon dioxide occurs between the outside atmosphere and inside your lungs. Stage two, cellular respiration, is where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide occurs between your blood and metabolically active tissues. It means you cannot physically act without experiencing shortness of breath, fatigue, and discomfort. Having an unhealthy respiratory system can mean living with the diseases of cystic fibrosis, asthma, emphysema, pulmonary hypertension, and/or pneumonia.
