to the programme - British International School, Phuket

30-31 March & 1 April 2015, 6pm
Head of Performing Arts Paulette Wilkinson
It seems such a long time ago that Mr Evans and I decided on Oliver! as the
2015 whole school production for our inaugural collaboration at British International School, Phuket. Following auditions for the main cast in Term 1 we
began rehearsals in earnest after the October holiday and a committed cast
have worked on this performance, twice a week and over several weekends.
In such a busy school – we have rehearsed on stage with the majority of the
cast in their football kits and boots, squeezing in a rehearsal between football
practices and matches – it has been an uphill task to gather a large cast in one
place, but we have got there in the end.
The students’ sheer energy, sense of fun, and desire to be involved in the
details of the production, ensures you will witness a committed and vibrant
performance in the ensemble numbers interspersed with talented and sensitive individual characterisations.
Director Timothy Evans
As director of the acting sections it has been quite a challenge. What I could
bring from drama class? Musicals are complex works. And this is one of the
great musicals. You place the actor down stage left at the end of her speech.
But wait! She now has to sing with two others upstage right!
What was clear from the start was to have no props, except sticks. In Japan I
have seen wonderful theatre using such minimalism. I hope it leaves you the
audience with something to imagine.
It has been a delight to collaborate with our genial new Head of Performing
Arts. It has been satisfying to work with many talented students; what other
medium brings Year 5 to Year 13 together as one?
We go to musicals for the song, the costume and the emotional pull of many
voices. As a non-musician I have tried to add something non-musical. I hope
Charles Dickens and Lionel Bart would have approved.

Synopsis
The musical opens with the workhouse children processing into their
dining room. They sing “Food Glorious Food” in the hope that they will be
given a feast for dinner. However as usual Widow Corney, who runs the
workhouse, and Mr Bumble, the parish beadle, enter to serve gruel to the
boys. Alone amongst them Oliver approaches Bumble and dares to ask,
“Please, sir, I want some more.” Bumble is outraged. Oliver must go and
so he hawks Oliver through the streets of London singing “Boy For Sale.”
Oliver is sold to Mr Sowerberry, the undertaker. Oliver is treated badly by
the Sowerberry family, so alone, plaintive and surrounded by coffins, he
sings, “Where Is Love?”
He runs away and meets the Artful Dodger and together they sing “Consider
Yourself At Home” and our joined by the whole cast welcoming Oliver to
life in London. Oliver is taken to a hideout to meet Fagin and the apprentice
thieves - they explain to Oliver how they earn their living in “You’ve Got
To Pick a Pocket Or Two”. Nancy, Bill Sykes girl, and Bet arrive and sing
“It’s A Fine Life”. They explain that although their lives are hard, they are
quite content with their lot. Next morning Oliver goes with the boys and is
arrested by the police, not for picking pockets but simply for looking guilty.
A rousing bar scene opens Act 2 with Nancy and the chorus singing “Oompah-pah”. The arrival of Sykes soon stops the happy scene. Fagin’s boys tell
of Oliver’s arrest by the police but that, as he has been found to be innocent,
he is now safe in the house of a kindly, rich gentleman – Mr Brownlow. Fagin
and Sykes send Nancy to get Oliver back. Meanwhile, Oliver has become a
well cared for little boy. Seeing London street-traders from his bedroom
window he sings “Who Will Buy?”, a plea that his good fortune will become
permanent. However, outside the house he is captured by Nancy and she
returns him to Fagin. Fagin sings “Reviewing the Situation” while he contemplates the idea of running his life on legal grounds.
Bumble and Mrs Corney, now married, discover that Oliver is the heir to a
rich family and try to get him back. A regretful Nancy plans to return Oliver
to Mr Brownlow. She is fearful of Sykes yet sings, “As Long As He Needs
Me”. Sykes stalks and kills her, grabs Oliver and, after a chase, is himself
killed. Oliver is restored to his benefactor who, as it turns out, is actually
his own grandfather. Fagin, now minus the boys, home and money, reprises
“Reviewing the Situation”.
