RE/MAX Excelsior offered
two programs at the
Library this winter
designed to help home
sellers maximize their
financial gain. On
February, 21 F. Moore McLaughlin,
Esq., CPA and Principal, ALLSTATES
1031 presented “Building Wealth through
1031 Tax Deferred Exchanges”. A 1031
exchange, also known as a Starker
exchange, allows an individual to defer
Capital Gains taxes by rolling over all of the proceeds
received from the sale of an investment property into the
purchase of one or more other like-kind investment
properties.
The second program, held on March 7, was presented by
Jackie Davis, an Interior Consultant and Room Stylist and
frequent guest on HGTV’s "Decorating Cents". Cosponsored by RE/MAX Excelsior and National City
Mortgage. “Be Intentional: Dress Your House for Succe$$”
taught attendees how to showcase their homes to accomplish
the goal of selling one’s home in a short time frame for a
higher price.
“Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam,
Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home.”
~John Howard Payne, US actor & dramatist

Parents want the very best for their children, especially when
it comes to nutrition. Eating well helps to promote excellent
health and is the right insurance for a person’s long-term
health and well-being. Fortunately, to accomplish this, we live
in the best of times. Excellent doctors and nutritionists have
provided us with an abundance of easy to read research to
help guide us with a new food pyramid, nutrition related
books and articles and healthy menus and recipes.
Temptation, however, is also in abundance.
Adults and children alike are all
influenced by the fast food chain
advertisements and lured by vending
machine treats. While it is not
possible to control all of these
factors, we can fortify them with
good habits at home. The following list
will help those interested in nutrition to
read and learn about the value of healthy eating and the
influence it has on your entire life.
The picture book The edible pyramid: good eating every
day by Loreen Leedy introduces the food pyramid to the
youngest audience as restaurant customers learn how many
servings from the different food groups to have every day.
Rex Barron has also written a nutrition-themed picture book
which is entitled Showdown at the food pyramid. When
snack foods take over the food pyramid and make it
collapse, members of the various food groups have
to work together using the Great Food Guide
to rebuild it.
Ann
Thomas’ Food series includes the titles
Dairy products, Fats, oils, and sweets,
Fruits, Grains, and Meat and protein.
Each book offers a simple introduction
of
the food group presented and explains
their role in nutrition.
Joan D’Amico’s Healthy body cookbook: Over 50 fun
activities and delicious recipes for kids includes recipes that
contain nutrients important for the heart, muscles, teeth, skin,
nerves, and other parts of the body.
Nutrition Anyone? is a part of the Nutrition series by author
Kristin Petrie. This title discusses what nutrition is, how what
we eat affects our bodies, the importance of good nutrition,
the digestive process, and more. Other books in the series are
focused on the food pyramid and vitamins and minerals.

Author Tells
Tale of Horror
and Triumph
On Thursday, March 16,
Beatrice Fernando, author
of "In Contempt of Fate"
spoke to an audience about
her experiences as a
modern-day slave. In an
effort to help support her
family, the Sri Lankan
native attempted to gain
employment outside her
home country. She found
herself sold to a wealthy
Lebanese woman who
beat, starved, and verbally
abused her. Her stirring
memoir showcases the
insufferable victimization
and astounding survival
instincts that led her to find
love and freedom as an
American immigrant.

A Letter from Our Director
Dear Readers,
Spring is a time of new beginnings, and we at the library are hopeful that this spring
will bring new energy to our town. The April election will decide the fate of many
municipal departments, especially the library. If you are a library user and supporter,
we may be asking for your help promoting the library in the months ahead. With our
certification in the balance, we will be grateful for your assistance.
Thank you again for your interest in the library. It is very much appreciated.
~ Mary Todd, Director
