Metabolic Profiling of Nepenthes ampullaria, Nepenthes rafflesiana and Nepenthes x hookeriana
Nepenthes species is a tropical carnivorous pitcher plant which is locally known as ‘periuk kera’. The genus is
attractive due to their habitat in the area of infertile soil and their different diets among species. Some species
appeared to be carnivorous whilst some species had evolved into detritivore. Thus, metabolism in those species with
different dietary might be different. Hybridisation among Nepenthes species is also extensive, either naturally or
artificially. Hybridisation played significant role in the evolution and diversification of plants, in which novel secondary
metabolites could be developed and new combinations of existing secondary compounds could be formed Therefore,
the aim of this research is to investigate the effects of hybridisation on the chemical compositions of different
Nepenthes plants. N. x hookeriana is a hybrid of N. ampullaria which is a detritivore that mainly consume leaf litter,
and N. rafflesiana which has a carnivorous diet. The metabolite compositions of this three species were profiled and
identified using LC-MS metabolic profiling. Furthermore, bioactivity and antioxidant assays were also performed on
the crude extracts. Currently, I am supervised by Dr. Goh Hoe Han and co-supervised by Dr. Syarul Nataqain
Baharum and Dr. Kamalrul Azlan Azizan.
