! The class will hear a story about a 7 year old boy named Lysander (liss ­ sand ­ ur) and how on his 7th birthday his life changed forever. We will go over the following words from the text: Conquest​

Many of the children are getting very comfortable with this, however I want to make sure they have mastered it before we move on. The objectives of this unit are: ● Review measuring length with nonstandard units ● Compare the same length measured with different units ● Recognize that more shorter units are needed to measure the same length in longer units. CKLA Skills ­ We will read a super short story “The Beach”, they will answer questions about the story and then have a different worksheet that will determine how well they can follow written directions. ________________________________ Wednesday we will learn about Athens: The Birthplace of
Democracy The class will hear a story about the city­state Athens and about a very important contribution that it gave to the world. We will go over the following words from the text: Achieve​

­ A way of governing, or ruling, that gives the people the power to choose their leaders and help create their own laws. In Math we will continue with the measuring unit. Today we learn how to measure length in meters. The objectives of this section are: ● Recognize the need for standard units of measurement ● Estimate and measure length to the nearest meter. CKLA Skills­ We will read a super short story “Sink or Float” and answer questions about the story. The children will then have the opportunity to read a paragraph and draw each portion of the story. This will show how well they pay attention to the different portions of written text. They will then get a little silly with an introduction to compound words. They will make up compound words that end in cake. For example: bird,cake and the picture shows a bird dressed up like a cake. The students will also be working with the suffix ­ing. Thursday we will be a pausing point for us to go over all that we have learned. Students will: ● Identify the area of ancient Greece on a map. ● Describe the terrain of ancient Greece and how it affected development ● Locate Crete, the Black Sea, the Aegean Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea on a map ● Define the term civilization (​
the society, culture, and way of life of a particular area) ● Define the term city ­ state (​
a city that with its surrounding territory forms an independent state.) ● Explain that the ancient Greeks worshipped many gods and goddesses ● Identify Mount Olympus as the place the ancient Olympic Games ● Describe the Olympic Games of ancient Greece ● Describe how the contributions of the ancient Greek civilization have influenced the present ● Describe the city­state Sparta and the Spartan way of life ● Explain that Athens is named after the goddess Athena ● Describe the city­state Athens ● Describe how Athenians worshipped Athena ● Explain what the Parthenon was ● Define the term democracy ● Identify Athens as the birthplace of democracy ● Explain how Athenian boys and girls were educated ● Explain that women did not have as many rights as men in Greek society ● Compare/contrast life in Sparta and Athens. I know this looks like a lot! However, this is what we have been learning for 2 weeks at this point. The students have really been attentive and have really enjoyed learning this information. You can ask them about all of these things on Thursday evening to see how much they can tell you! They might even be able to teach you about it! :) I will also be incorporating Olympic games that we can do inside to split up the learning and make things fun. Examples of this are cotton ball shot put and paper plate discus. I am super excited about this, I hope they enjoy it! In Math we will be working with word problems. The objective of this section are: ● Add or subtract lengths in meters. ● Solve word problems. CKLA Skills ­ Students will draw a self portrait with a friend and write a short story about things they do together. They will then read another paragraph and draw a picture trying to incorporate each portion of the paragraph. (Just like they did on Wednesday) Lastly, they will have 6 phrases that they will draw a picture to illustrate the phrase. For example: Jump the rope ­ the children will draw a picture of children jumping rope. We will also read the story “Hot Dog” ___________________________________ Friday we will be learning about Marathon The class will hear a story about what happened when the powerful Persians invaded ancient Greece. We will go over the following words from the text: Avoid ​
