Thank you for your continued support of the Foundation. We continue to spotlight some of Root’s outstanding teachers supported by the Foundation. This week, the spotlight moves from Art to STEM and Ms. Dozier: Ms. Dozier is an alum of the University of North Carolina with an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and Psychology and a M.Ed in Elementary Education. After 13 years as a 2nd grade classroom teacher, she enjoys the challenge of working with all grade levels to continue to develop Root’s STEM curriculum. She's a fan of Tar Heel basketball, good coffee, and good seafood. What is your favorite thing about Root? My favorite thing about Root is the energy and family-like atmosphere you feel among students and teachers the moment you step in the door. We are a small school with a lot of heart. Science, Technology, Engineering or Math—do you have a favorite? I love it, all. Teaching STEM has definitely made me a better teacher. I love how excited the students get coming to the STEM Lab. We love diving into the challenges together and learning from each other. I wish I had had a STEM Lab growing up! Root "extracurriculars"? I’ve led and organized Root’s STEM Fridays, STEM Family Nights, and Root’s annual STEM Showcase (or Fair). Last year I helped organize our first Career Day/Fair. I love making connections with a variety of community organizations and securing resources to make our STEM program stronger at Root. 1/16/2017 Favorite lab experiment you've done with the students? My favorite lab experiment thus far would probably be analyzing mucus (snot) samples with our fifth graders last year as a part of our study of the respiratory system. What’s “snot” to like? From the student’s perspective, I think their favorite activity was extracting DNA from peas. They thought that was too cool and I did, too! My favorite STEM Challenge was the year our entire school completed the “Canstruction” competition where students at all grade levels built huge structures made out of full cans of food to display at our annual Rootin’ Tootin’ event. Afterward, all food was donated to a local community program. Why did you want to become a teacher? I became a teacher because it’s something I have always wanted to do! I’m so grateful I was able to join such a noble profession. I had so many great teachers growing up that helped me gain the confidence to do things that I love. Nothing gives you more joy and sense of accomplishment than working among children every day! Hometown? Hobbies? Beach or mountains? I grew up in Laurinburg, NC. I love reading, Tarheel basketball, going for a walk with my dog, Sugar, and spending time with my family. I would definitely choose the beach over the mountains. Wrightsville Beach holds a special place in my heart.
