Maryland-the state where he was born &where he worked for a shipbuilder New York-where he lived as a young adult when he escaped slavery & also where he lived as an adult when he wrote the North Star Great Britain– he moved here when he feared the slave catchers in NY; he could live as a free man here What did Douglass do in his lifetime to help others gain freedoms and rights? He was an abolitionist and fought against slavery. He wrote & delivered speeches against slavery. He met with President Abraham Lincoln to discuss improving conditions for African Americans and ending prejudice in the U.S. What obstacles did Douglass face? How did he overcome them? As a child, he couldn’t read. He would give bread to the poor white boys in the neighborhood if they would teach him what they learned in school. He would also read the Aulds’ son’s school books when they were not home. He was determined to learn to read. As a young boy and adult, he was a slave. He escaped by dressing as a sailor & boarding a train. He also moved to Great Britain because of his fear of the slave catchers in NY. He then moved back to NY after his friends paid Mr. Auld for his freedom. He wrote a newspaper called the North Star to share how he overcame slavery.
