The Wave Volume 14, Issue 28 April 29, 2016 Mrs. Ackley’s Message . . . Dear North Lake Families, Last week, Mrs. Flannery’s Fabulous First Grade Class helped clean up the school grounds on Earth Day. Thank you, children, for taking care of your environment and your school. Thank you, Mrs. Flannery, for modeling citizenship and service at North Lake School. Looking ahead to the glorious month of May, North Lake School will host a Blood Drive from 2:00-6:00 p.m. in the MPR on Monday, May 9th. We will also feature our Anti-Bullying Program at 5:00 p.m. in the big gym with J.K. Lee’s Blackbelt Academy. I am sure this event will be a valuable experience for your child and encourage attendance. Deputy Haizel spoke with our 7th and 8th graders on Tuesday as a follow up to his school law presentation. He asked the group how many of them had inappropriate content on their smart phones and many hands went up. He also stated that smart phones actually belong to parents because you have to be at least 18 years of age in Wisconsin to own a phone (not to mention many parents pay the monthly bill). I share this information as a reminder to check your child’s device and monitor his/her social media and internet activity. I told the middle school students that the entire North Lake staff (especially me) cares about each and every one of them and we want to help solve any problems during their time at North Lake School. We have a safe, nurturing environment and it is an appropriate time to learn from our mistakes. Thank you, parents, for being involved and contacting me when there is a concern. Teamwork has been our year-long school theme. I appreciate and thank all of the teachers for everything they do. I am very proud of our North Lake School family and look forward to celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week (with PBC and Mrs. Aicher’s help) beginning on Monday. Finally, I want to also acknowledge our amazing office staff and wish Ms. Rosine and Mrs. Romenesko a happy administrative assistant week this week. It is nice to work with such wonderful women. Have a nice weekend, A parent asked me to remind families about bike safety and slowing down in our parking lot when kids are present. I have also asked the Arrowhead Lacrosse Team who practice on our fields to take extra caution and slow down. Many of our students bike to and from school as well as around town. Let’s all work together to keep our children safe. Thank you for paying attention and reporting to the office or to me when this is not the case. It’s Spring, and everyone is thinking... Seed Sprout Bloom At North Lake School we “grow” readers. With an exceptional K-8 literacy program that includes reading in all content areas and a comprehensive intervention support system we prepare our students for high school and beyond with the skills and strategies to become lifelong learners. A “garden” filled with a variety of books gives students the opportunity to develop and practice these literacy skills. In his book, I Can Read with my Eyes Shut, Dr. Seuss wrote, “the more you read, the more you know…” Two opportunities to expand your child’s access to books are at the Scholastic Book Fair and the Town Hall Library. Vicki Harvat and her literacy supporting volunteers will open the Scholastic Book Fair today. It will be open at various time throughout the school day from April 29 to May 6. The Town Hall Library provides our students with additional programs and materials. Stop by, be sure to wish them a Happy 50th Birthday this weekend. We truly appreciate the support of our school families and community. Thank you. National Staff Appreciation Week May 2nd-6th Parents, please have your student honor a special teacher or staff member by sending a thank you card, flower, or treat next week to school. The PBC will celebrate all week with snacks in the conference room and lunch on Friday. We will have daily raffles for the staff to win prizes such as gift cards, movie tickets, and spring flowers. If you would like to donate something to the raffle, please contact Christine Aicher at [email protected]. The Staff Appreciation Week flyer is being sent with the Wave.
