Internal Conflict

Internal conflict is a struggle within the character’s mind.

Deals with problems such as:

Which action should I take?

Who should I date?

What’s the right thing to do?


External Conflict

A struggle between the protagonist and an opposing force:

Could be a struggle between:

Another character (antagonist)

Force of nature (tornado)

Society (trying to fit in)

Technology (Terminator)
So what does conflict have to do with
characterization?

By looking at how characters react to conflict, we can determine if they are
static or dynamic.

Static characters, like static on TV, always STAY THE SAME


Dynamic characters, like dynamite, CHANGE as they encounter conflict


Their personality (traits) do NOT change
Their personality (traits) DO change
