Characteristics of the Piedmont Region - foothills of the mountains - includes rolling hills and many valleys - The region was once a productive farming area but poor farming practices led to the erosion of topsoil. - red clay = not good for farming - One agricultural industry that thrives in this region is peaches. - Waterfalls and swift flowing rivers provided water power for early mills and textile industry in South Carolina. Physical Features Human Features 10 The Sand Hills Region (pages 38-39) Use an ORANGE crayon or colored pencil to show where the Sand Hills Region is located. Also, draw and label the FALL LINE using a color of your choice. Characteristics of the Sand Hills Region - in ancient times this region was the sea coast - flat land and sandy soil that is NOT good for growing crops - the Sand Hills region follows a drop in elevation so there are many waterfalls and rapids Physical Features Human Features 11 The Inner and Outer Coastal Plain (pages 40-41) Use a PURPLE crayon or colored pencil to show where the Inner and Outer Coastal Plain is located. Characteristics of the Inner and Outer Coastal Plains - these two regions make up 2/3 of South Carolina - large stands of trees promoted the development of timbering in this region - well drained soil + sufficient rainfall = long growing season - cotton and soybeans grow well in this region Physical Features Human Features 12 Coastal Zone (pages 42-43) Use a YELLOW crayon or colored pencil to show where the Coastal Zone is located.
