Pastor’s Ponderings … I have always really appreciated music, especially with regard to the contemporary Christian music. Not all of this music, however, is theologically or doctrinally correct. We must always be careful as to what we are feeding our souls, and even more careful that we’re not getting caught up in the emotional ties to the melody or chorus of a particular song. I’m not saying that all contemporary Christian music is this way; believe me when I tell you that a lot of the music we hear on the radio or in our worship settings today is very powerful and biblically accurate. I recently read a quote from an unknown author that states; “Where words fail, music speaks.” I think we can add another step to that… “And this is yet another way to hear from God.” But how do we know we’re hearing from God in our music, or in other areas of life? The simple answer is this; does what we hear, or what we are listening to, align with the Word of God? We can ask that question with everything in life. How do I know the will of God for my life, especially when I am torn between two options? Does it align with the Word of God? How can I know that my Sunday school lesson or Bible study lesson is the right one for my class? Is what you’re teaching in alignment with the Word of God? You see, we can ask all sorts of questions, and even come up with some pretty good answers on our own, but do they align with the Word of God? Even when preaching I must make absolutely certain that what I preach is from God and is in alignment with his Word. The story of the Ethiopian Eunuch is one of my favorite stories in the entire Bible. We find this story in the book of Acts, chapter 8, where an angel of the Lord directs Philip to go in a certain direction, only to find that he has an encounter with someone who needed to hear from God. Read these words as recorded by Luke in the Book of Acts: 26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” 27 So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, 28 and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the book of Isaiah the prophet. 29 The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.” 30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. 31 “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 33 In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.” 34 The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” 35 Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. 36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. Why shouldn’t I be baptized?” 38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. 40 Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea. (continued on page three) 2 Pastor’s Ponderings … (continued from page two) I believe the will of God (the angel advising Philip to go in a certain direction without knowing all of the facts) aligned with the Word of God (preach the GOOD NEWS), and a life was forever changed because of it. What if Philip didn’t heed to God’s voice to move? Sure, God could have used someone else; but there’s a good chance that this man could have gone through life without ever knowing. Perhaps God is asking you to move in a certain direction? Perhaps it’s time you yield to his voice and move! There will always be other things to do, but what God has you doing is far more important! You’ll never know if you don’t go!!!
