Yarm Preparatory School Issue 535 Friday 5th May 2017 Visit the Prep School Pages:- Head’s Message . . . www.yarmschool.org This week we have celebrating the study of geography across the school and my thanks go to Mr Harandon and Mrs Barton for their coordination of events and the staff who have embraced each strand of the week. Geography week has allowed us to explore a wide variety of topics and has seen a number of special visitors from across the school and further afield who have hosted a range of talks, assemblies and workshops for different year groups. We were delighted to welcome back to the school our friends Rita and Geoff Fowler, founders of The Mustard Seed Project, to learn about their charitable work in Mombasa, Kenya. Their story started nearly a decade ago when they visited a school in a slum area of Mombasa, they were very moved by what they witnessed and felt they had to help - The Mustard Seed Project was born! We have been supporting their efforts in the last few years, with charitable funds raised at school, to help build a new school in a slum area of Mombasa. It was excellent to learn how this project is progressing and helping to provide a quality education for local children. They have completed the ground floor and opened their school, Miche Bora, which currently educates over 75 children. They are half way through this ambitious project and are keen to reach their goal. Our ‘Colour Run’ later this term will be to raise further funds for The Mustard Seed Project and we hope it will help to edge Rita and Geoff closer to completing Miche Bora School. Bill Sawyer @HeadPrepYarm HMC Singing Day Wednesday 26th April was a hugely exciting day for the music department, as we were hosting the first HMC Singing Day. When we had first suggested it, we didn't think there would be much interest - how wrong we were! With 5 other schools attending, and well over 200 children taking part, it was an immensely popular event! We were delighted to welcome Bow, Bronte House, Ackworth, GSAL and Silcoates Schools to take part in the day with us, and it was a great opportunity to meet other music staff. The children worked very hard, learning a varied repertoire of funny and serious songs, and singing in 2 parts for the majority of the day. They listened carefully and sang beautifully. I was extremely proud of the Yarm Prep Choristers, who behaved impeccably, were superb hosts, and sang their hearts out. My thanks to them for their unwavering enthusiasm, and to Mr Williams, and Miss Redhead, who kept the whole thing running smoothly. Last week some children from the Prep School participated in the Senior School fashion show! Summer Dance Showcase Friday 16th June 2017 6:30pm The showcase will include pupils of a variety of ages, from the Prep School to students in Upper Sixth, and a vast range of dance styles will be showcased from Bollywood to Contemporary. It promises to be an evening full of entertainment. Tickets on sale now from the school office and online! £5 adult £2 child/concession We dressed as bumble bees and all made our own costumes. We did a dance to fireflies and other songs! At the end we walked the catwalk and posed which was really fun. Our favourite bit was the catwalk! Gracie Rhodes-Hildreth and Eva Leadbitter 3N We all really enjoyed doing the fashion show last week it was so much fun. We performed really well on the night in front of lots of people. Thanks to Mrs Dunkley for teaching us a great dance! My favourite part was definitely the catwalk! Ffion Roberts 4J In the fashion show there were loads of people from year 3 all the way through to 6th form who participated throughout the show. When I danced I felt the spotlight glittering on top of me, making me more nervous than ever! Through the performance I conquered my nerves. Everyone had worked really hard for the night and everyone was fantastic! Not only did we play matches, we also had a good time going to places. After our match against Pocklington, we went to a fish and chip shop to have dinner and then went to the arcade, where we played bowling and arcade games. In my row were Mr Underwood, Mr Sawyer, Ammar, Theo, Charlie T and Max J. In the other row were Adhi, Nathan, Tom V, Tom W, Matthew and Rishik. The next morning, we went to a café where we got lunch, went into the adventure park and had ice cream. We walked down to the beach where we played crazy golf. After that we went to Ampleforth to play our second and last match on the cricket tour and from there we went back to school. It was great fun and the lads played really well. Gaurav K, 6M On Bank Holiday Monday the U11A team travelled to Foremarke Hall Prep School in Repton for the 1st round of the IAPS rounders tournament. The girls were hungry for a good start to the season and quickly got to grips with the concentration and quick decision making needed to succeed. They followed this with some tenacious batting and pressure on the opposition to win the game after the first bat of the 2nd innings. A fantastic start. Well done! Miss L Routledge Year 3 Cricket v Clifton On Friday 28th April 2017, Year 3 visited St Peter’s, Clifton. The Year 3 boys played cricket and the Year 3 girls played rounders. The boys started off with some catching, followed by some long barrier catching. Then we played some cricket. I liked batting. After that we played kwik cricket. In our team/group there was England v South Africa. England beat South Africa by one run. The score was 71-72 runs to England. This was the end of the morning. We then went to lunch, there were fish fingers, pasta and quiche to choose from. I had second servings. We then said goodbye to Clifton and came back to school. I really enjoyed the cricket. Shlok A, 3A On Friday all the Year Three’s went to Clifton to play rounders and cricket. I went off to play rounders with all the girls. We had a warm up of 5 different exercises then we had a full game of rounders. Then we went for lunch once we had had our lunch we went for a play around. Then we all got back on the coach and said thanks to Clifton. I LOVE GAMES. Gracie R-H, 3N Yarm U10 v Pocklington It was a glorious sunny day as we played a tense match against Pocklington. The A team sadly lost by 13 runs and the B team lost by 12 runs. Despite the result we had a fantastic time and learnt a lot which we will take forward to our next game. Oliver G & Diego G, 5B 3A—Personification 3A have been looking at personification in their English lessons this week. Not sure what this means? Aditya Paul explains “Personification is basically where objects which are not even alive are given human qualities. Enjoy the following powerful sentences from the children. “The ship died as the sea swallowed it up” Isaac Akowuah “The sunflower swallowed “The old chair moaned “The sun glared “The toothbrush tickles the water” as the boy jumped on it.” at the small cottage” my teeth” Mustafa El-Sherif Lydia Waddington “The tree was dancing on the grass while the wind was pushing it left and right” Aditya Paul “The flower is dancing as the wind is blowing” Yara Alsayed Elizabeth Neilson “In the morning the alarm clock screams in my face and I smell the porridge walking down the stairs” Zachary McCluskey “My clothes are patiently resting on the floor ready to be worn” Lily Cox “Warm and happy, the house stood in the bright summer’s day” Naila Krishnamoorthy “The candle flame danced in the dark” “The trees talked to me in the autumnal breeze” Shlok Arcot Charlie Bernard “The wind sang a lonely song” “The sunflower nodded in “The waves laughed at the wind” Samuel Shawcross the other waves” Claudia Carter Sofia Andrews Sabeeh Qureshi “The waves swam to the shore” Oliver Mowbray Prep School attend Newcastle Falcons v Worcester Warriors For the second time this year the Prep School made the trip to Kingston Park to watch the Newcastle Falcons. The children were the guard of honour as the players ran onto the pitch. The Newcastle Falcons were playing Worcester Warriors. Both the Falcons and Warriors were well matched with the Falcons scoring the winning try five minutes from time. All of the children enjoyed the game, they were singing and cheering and made sure their voices were heard when the full time whistle went. Some of the children got to meet the Falcons player Will Witty and some made an appearance in the crowd during the ITV4 Rugby Highlights. Mr C Simpson My favourite part of the Falcons trip was going on the pitch to represent Yarm School when the players ran on to the pitch. Tenuk M, 4S Newcastle Falcons hosted Worcester Warriors at Kingston Park. The match was intense but the Falcons kicked 3 successful penalties and by half time had a 9-0 lead. In the second half Worcester were awarded a penalty try and closed the gap with a successful conversion. Meanwhile the Falcons had a player sin binned. Worcester doubled their lead just minutes later making it 9-14 to Worcester. With 6 minutes to full time Falcons crashed over to secure 4 points. This was a fun trip. I enjoyed the Falcons trip because it was really intense and I thought it was quite dramatic. My favourite part was the start when we got to walk onto the pitch and wave our flags. Amelia S, 4P When we went to the Newcastle Falcons match we did the guard of honour. It was amazing. We had to get in two lines and wave our flags in the air. There were about 8000 people at the game, it was scary being in front of so may people when we ran around the pitch. The match ended late, I slept the whole way back on the coach. On 28th April a group of children from the Prep School went to the Newcastle Falcons v Worcester Warriors rugby game. It was the last game of the season and we were fortunate enough to act as the guard of honour for the players coming onto the pitch. The final score was 16-14 to the Falcons with Sonatane Takulua scoring all of Falcons’ points. It was a close game and very exciting to watch! Everyone had a really good time.
