But in mining projects a main challenge is to manage mine tailings and waste rock in a manner that will be environmentally acceptable and work essentially in perpetuity. Often, land-based solutions have been preferred, but these may require maintenance for unpredictable time periods after mine closure, and several instances of dam failure illustrate that landbased disposal can be problematic. Submarine or lacustrine disposal of waste may in some cases offer better opportunities to secure long-term solutions. The objective of the conference is to gather specialists from the mining sector and the scientific and regulatory communities to present and discuss advantages and disadvantages of placing mine tailings and waste rock in the sea or in lakes. What criteria should be used if we are, for example, to create stable submerged deposits and minimize the risk of extensive smothering of the sea bed, the risk of uncontrolled dispersal of fines and the risk of release of contaminants? What baseline studies are needed? The organizers encourage presentations of case studies from closed and existing mines and from those in the planning stages. Each speaker will be asked for an abstract to be sent to the conference together with the registration. We will not publish proceedings of the conference, but intend to make a written report with the main conclusions and recommendations, based on the presentations and the discussions. Presenters will be requested to make their Powerpoint presentations available as an aid to the preparation of the meeting report. Among the participants the conference organizers will appoint members of a group that shall report the main findings, conclusions and recommendations from each session. The conference will be relatively small with a maximum of 70 participants, with appropriate time for both presentations and discussions. The organizers reserve the right to select from among the proposed presentations and participants when preparing the final program. The conference language will be English.
