widespreadcriticalacclaim.ThisEaster(13-15April),hejoinsBrittenSinfoniatooffera
personalreflectiononBach’sStJohnPassion,singingEvangelistandcuratinga
programmethatsetsthemajesticmixofthetheatricalanddevotionalinBach’s
masterworkalongsideaselectionofpoemsbyT.S.Eliotandsacredtexts,readbySimon
RussellBeale.BrittenSinfoniaLeaderJacquelineShavedirectstheorchestra,with
BrittenSinfoniaVoicesdirectedbyEamonnDougan.
MarkPadmorecomments:“Bach'sStJohnPassionisaprofoundmeditationonsuffering.
ItwaswrittenfortheGoodFridayserviceintheThomasChurchofLeipzigtodisturbthe
conscienceandprovokethecompassionofthecongregation.Byincludingbiblicaltexts
andpoetrybyT.S.Eliot-readbySimonRussellBeale-wehopetofocusattentiononthe
messagethatthistimelessmasterpiecehasforourownage”.
MarkPadmorehasbeenaregularmusicalcollaboratorwithBrittenSinfoniasince2008.
Thecollaborationhasresultedinmanyandvariedprojectsincluding:Britten’sNocturne,
performedinaconcertstagingbyKatieMitchell;performancesofBritten’sSerenadefor
Tenor,HornandStringsandLesIlluminations;asixteendateEuropeantourfeaturingthe
premiereofaspeciallycommissionedworkfortenorandorchestrabyNicoMuhly,andan
acclaimedEnglishsongprogrammewithFinzi’sDiesNatalisatitsheart(alsoreleasedon
HarmoniaMundiHMU807552).
BrittenSinfonia’sEasterconcertsaresomethingofaseasonalfixtureattheBarbican,
wheretheorchestraisanAssociateEnsemble,andinNorwichandCambridge,wherethe
orchestraalsoenjoysresidencies.
