State Employees’ Credit Union 2014 Report to the Membership Measuring the Report to the Credit Union Difference Membership Inside From your Chairman 2 Different from the Start 5 Convenience Counts 6 Going the Extra Mile 8 Pursuing Dreams 10 Beyond the Basics 12 The Numbers Factor 14 SECU Foundation Difference 16 Value of Volunteers 18 2013 – 2014 Board of Directors 20 Audit Committee 21 Advisory Boards 21 From your Chairman At State Employees’ Credit Union, there is a difference. When compared to financial institutions, the SECU difference is somewhat similar to the comparison of apples and oranges. While apples and oranges are both fruits, grow on trees and have nutritional benefits, their differences cannot be seen until you remove the peeling to reveal what is beneath. The same goes for financial institutions. On the outside, the branches may look similar, but beyond the doors you may find a very different story. Who is served and how, what products are offered, benefits realized. As a not-for-profit financial cooperative, State Employees’ Credit Union is owned by you, the more than 1.9 million members – North Carolina’s State and Public School employees and families – who expect SECU to not only be a trusted financial services provider, but to also make a “difference” in your lives. While my Report of the Chairman outlines some of the broader measures of difference at SECU, the Annual Report to the Membership highlights more specific differences, featuring stories of how the Credit Union helped make an important personal difference for your fellow Credit Union member-owners. High on the scale of improving busy lives is increased convenience – more time – what all of us need most. While many financial institutions are reducing their options for personal, face-to-face service, SECU continues to fill the gaps in North Carolina communities with a local branch presence. Offices opened for the first time in Bermuda Run, Carthage and Locust, and additional branches opened in Durham, Jacksonville and Winston-Salem, totaling 255 locations statewide. Over 1,100 no-surcharge CashPoints® Automated Teller Machines are readily available across the State in your hometowns and in all 100 North Carolina counties – anywhere you may travel. In addition to the 24-hour ASK SECU Voice Response service, the Contact Center provides 24-7 access to services. This year SECU chose to expand Contact Center jobs to 33 additional locations – current SECU branches within North Carolina – increasing efficiency and creating jobs in many rural areas of the State. Online convenience is also a must and SECU’s Mobile and Member Access online sessions now exceed 13 million each month. SECU is working to give you time saving benefits, without sacrificing access or service. In addition to convenience, availability of products and services that make sense for your financial needs is another measure of the SECU difference. During the past year, the Credit Union continued to look for potential money-saving opportunities for you, and specifically reached out to members whose mortgage or auto loans could realize substantial savings via an SECU refinance. As a result, many of you are now saving hundreds of dollars in monthly payments, which will result in thousands saved over the life of a loan. Another financial need often overlooked by members is life insurance and SECU Life Insurance Company introduced a beneficial facet to its program this year – the provision of a no-cost $1,000 group term life insurance policy for every FAT CAT and Zard youth account holder, with the option to purchase $9,000 in additional coverage for an annual cost of only $18. Other term and whole life products were also enhanced with more competitive pricing and simplified processing to provide under-insured members quick access to affordable policies. 2 When your Credit Union is successful in making a financial difference in the lives of members, the subsequent result is overall positive numbers and growth for the cooperative. In the past year, 77,000 new members joined SECU, assets increased by $1.9 billion, 79,000 auto loans were originated totaling $1.1 billion, the mortgage loan portfolio grew by $1.2 billion and deposits rose by $1.7 billion. SECU’s expense-to-asset ratio also remained low at 1.68%, the same as the previous year and well below credit union peers! A quality loan portfolio continues to be maintained, along with safe, liquid investment holdings, strong earnings, substantial loan loss reserves, ample capital and no debt. While the Credit Union consistently measures high with safety and soundness, another important measure is member satisfaction. 2014’s Membership Survey results indicated 98% of members were satisfied with SECU’s service quality over the past year and 75% consider the Credit Union to be their primary financial institution, a figure well above the norm of SECU’s industry peers. SECU also received the top customer advocacy ranking in a recent Forrester Research report titled, Customer Advocacy 2013: How U.S. Consumers Rate Their Financial Firms. The report indicated 82% of SECU’s members agree with the statement, “My financial provider does what’s best for me, not just its own bottom line.” And this, my fellow members, brings us back to what makes SECU so different. When you peel away the layers of our not-forprofit financial cooperative – it is people who make the difference, just like the 3,200+ volunteers among you who provide an immeasurable difference by representing your voices – conveying your financial needs, wants and concerns. Members of the Board of Directors, Advisory Boards, Audit Committee, Member Loan Review Committees, and those serving as Secret Shoppers ensure that SECU continues to serve its mission of making a positive financial difference in your lives. More than 5,000 Credit Union employees in branches and operations centers statewide also work tirelessly to serve the membership. The Board of Directors joins me in conveying a special thanks to the staff. During the past year, SECU employees completed nearly 90,000 tax returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, processed countless refinance applications to help members secure better loan rates and are always going the extra mile to improve members’ financial lives. The members of State Employees’ Credit Union, in turn, also continue to broaden the cooperative’s mission by meeting needs in local North Carolina communities through the member-funded SECU Foundation. Celebrating ten years of funding high impact projects in the areas of education, housing, healthcare and human services, SECU Foundation just completed its single largest donation year, providing $15 million to benefit our State’s citizens through scholarships, hospice services and a new SECU Family House, just to name a few of the many projects! Thank you for your continued membership, your support over the past year, and the immeasurable difference you make at SECU! Sincerely, James D. Johnson Chairman, Board of Directors 3 4 Different from the Start Back in 1937, seventeen individuals came together to form a not-for-profit financial cooperative — State Employees’ Credit Union — a place where members could pool together their resources for a better opportunity to save and borrow money at fair and affordable rates. Financial options were few for North Carolina’s State employees and their families, and the idea of a cooperative where each person would have ownership was quite different, as it provided a tangible benefit and hope for greater financial stability. Today, more than 1.9 million member-owners have a stake in their Credit Union, which remains a place that not only affords members the opportunity to improve their financial lives, but is also a fiscally safe and sound institution experiencing continued growth. Strong numbers are a reflection of success; however, it is equally important to note that when SECU was established, it was founded on a “People Helping People” philosophy. People, in fact, provide the foundational difference between SECU and other financial alternatives, as noted in the Report of the Chairman. More specific differences, however, are outlined in your fellow members’ stories, featured in the pages of this year’s Annual Report to the Membership. 5 Convenience Counts To effectively serve all members, it’s important to be conveniently accessible through personal and electronic service options. With a presence in all 100 North Carolina counties, SECU has 255 branches for local face-to-face service, 33 Contact Centers manned 24-7 by SECU staff to assist via phone, fax or e-mail, and over 1,100 no-surcharge CashPoints® ATMs positioned close to home and along roads all across the State. The SECU website, www.ncsecu.org, provides secure Member Access and Mobile Access for those with web-enabled devices, providing Credit Union convenience in the palm of a hand. Today’s busy lifestyle finds many members relying more on SECU’s electronic services, including Smithfield resident, KaShauna Brooks. When recently evaluating her budget, she realized balances on some of her high-interest credit cards were not decreasing as quickly as expected, even though she was making substantial monthly payments. Hoping to pay off the cards and secure savings, she reached out to her Credit Union through an online inquiry and personal loan request. Expecting a simple yes or no message, Ms. Brooks was surprised to find an SECU Financial Services Officer (FSO) responded with much more. She was offered the option to increase her low-interest SECU Visa® credit card limit to repay the non-SECU high-interest cards, saving her $1,966 in interest and allowing her to pay off the debt a year sooner. The FSO went a step further, providing Ms. Brooks with mortgage and vehicle refinance information that eventually translated into even more savings! 6 “SECU was quick to respond to my online credit card payoff inquiry, helping me successfully resolve that issue. It could have ended there, but the FSO went on to inform me of all the services SECU could assist with and how much I could be saving. After weighing the options, she also helped me refinance my car and home online. Not only am I spending less in interest, I’m now saving hundreds of dollars monthly. The member service was excellent and online convenience was key for me because of my work schedule!” KaShauna Brooks 7 Going the Extra Mile As a trusted financial services provider, it’s important for SECU to view all member inquiries, including simple requests, with a “big picture” mentality to ensure the member’s financial needs are truly being met. It is part of the Credit Union difference, where going the extra mile is the standard, not the exception. SECU recently went the extra mile for member Olga Salgado, who visited her local Hendersonville branch to make a simple request. She mentioned to a Financial Services Representative that she needed to provide copies of her account statements to a local car dealership as a condition of loan pre-approval and to test drive any vehicles. Asked if she had considered SECU for vehicle financing, Ms. Salgado responded she was concerned that her negative credit history would keep her from getting a loan with the Credit Union, but when she found a car, would welcome the opportunity to speak with a lending officer. Upon finding her desired car, Ms. Salgado returned to SECU where the FSO assisting with Salgado’s loan application made a discovery. The car dealership finance quote revealed that Ms. Salgado had been offered a $10,000 7-year loan with an interest rate exceeding 30%, resulting in a payment of nearly $500 per month and more than $18,000 in interest payments over the life of the loan. Knowing this was not in Ms. Salgado’s best interest, the FSO was able to pre-approve her for a higher loan amount to shop for a car. When Ms. Salgado returned a few days later with a bill of sale from the same dealership who claimed they had found her a “great deal,” the FSO learned the dealership marked up the vehicle 145% of the NADA value. Recognizing that the dealership was attempting to take advantage of Ms. Salgado financially, the Hendersonville branch referred her to a more reputable local dealership. She took the advice, found the perfect vehicle and returned to the branch excited to close the loan. In the end, the Credit Union helped Ms. Salgado lower her monthly payment to under $300, shorten her loan term by 2 years, reduce her interest rate to less than 5% and purchase more car for her money! 8 “I am very happy SECU helped me finance my vehicle. Others gave me a hard time, but my Credit Union approved me right away, treated me wonderfully and helped me get a good deal. The branch employees not only helped me save a lot of money and get a better deal on my car, they made me feel appreciated for doing business with SECU. I am so thankful I came to the Credit Union, as it was the right place for me.” Olga Salgado 9 Pursuing Dreams Helping families strengthen their financial future often paves the way for members to achieve goals and realize dreams. Savings rendered from a loan consolidation or refinance often helps make a college education attainable, homeownership achievable, or in the case of Paula and Eric Hollifield, the dream of fostering and adoption possible. Shortly after becoming members of SECU in 2013, the Hollifields inquired about a vehicle loan refinance. Pleased that the Credit Union helped save them approximately $100 per month by refinancing their car loan, the couple returned later to discuss the possibility of a mortgage refinance. Their mortgage situation was more complex — a first mortgage and a second balloon payment mortgage with two different lenders. Unfortunately, their credit had also been negatively affected when Mr. Hollifield’s income was temporarily reduced when he was out of work for shoulder surgery. An FSO at SECU’s Weaverville branch knew the Hollifield’s situation looked challenging on paper, but looking beyond those numbers, saw that the Credit Union could help make a substantial difference for this couple. After making some phone calls, the FSO completed additional research and helped the Hollifields with a mortgage refinance, eliminating their balloon payment and saving them $460 per month! The Hollifields were elated and knew the savings would help them realize their dream of fostering and adopting a child. Coincidentally, while Mrs. Hollifield had a desire to give up her job in order to pursue a foster child option, to the couple’s surprise, the monthly savings equaled her income and afforded them that opportunity! 10 “Joining SECU in 2013 was a great financial decision and we now have all of our accounts at the Credit Union. Refinancing both our auto and mortgage loans cut our expenses by more than $500. Foster care has a special place in our hearts and we recently felt led back to reestablishing our license. The refinancing was crucial to our situation, providing the extra savings to help us prepare for this journey. We were quite nervous about losing an income to pursue our dream, and were amazed to find that what we saved was the exact amount of the lost salary! SECU has certainly helped us toward our goal of fostering and adopting!” Paula and Eric Hollifield 11 Beyond the Basics When people hear the term financial services, what typically comes to mind for most is basic savings, checking and loan accounts. However, a successful financial strategy encompasses much more, and the Credit Union is fully prepared to help members develop a comprehensive plan through a variety of Financial Advisory Services, including insurance, tax preparation, investments and estate planning. Part of planning is preparing for the unexpected, and two key elements to help protect members and their loved ones in such circumstances are estate planning and life insurance. When SECU members Celia and John Ponder heard about the Credit Union offering estate planning services, they did not have wills in place. Wanting more information, they met with a Trust Representative at the Credit Union and during that meeting also discussed the possibility of purchasing additional life insurance to adequately meet the needs of their family of four, including two young children. The Ponders walked away with a strong financial plan for their future, not realizing how critical those decisions would soon be for their family. Three months later, Mr. Ponder died suddenly of a heart attack. Shortly thereafter, Ms. Ponder went for a cardiovascular check-up and was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition that would require surgery. These two devastating circumstances could have been even more negatively impacted without the recently acquired will and additional life insurance to aid with out-of-pocket medical and burial expenses. And, had the life insurance not been purchased prior to Ms. Ponder’s diagnosis, her medical condition would have dramatically reduced her options to even obtain coverage. Trust Services offered through MEMBERS® Trust Company, a federal thrift regulated by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Trust products are not credit union deposits, are not insured by the NCUA or any other federal government agency, are not obligations of or guaranteed by the credit union, MEMBERS® Trust Company or any affiliated entity, and involve investment risks, including the possible loss of principal. SECU insurance representatives are licensed to sell insurance in North Carolina only. 12 “Estate planning through the Credit Union was easy and thorough, and helped us realize the insurance we purchased ten years earlier would not be sufficient in the event something happened to one of us. We were able to complete our wills and medical power of attorney documents and better plan for the future by increasing our life insurance. I would never have expected how that planning would affect us only three months later. The decisions we made during the estate planning process helped to ensure the financial stability of our family despite our devastating loss and incurred medical bills.” Celia Ponder 13 The Numbers Factor Numbers are important for any financial institution, but for a not-for-profit cooperative like State Employees’ Credit Union, strong numbers translate into better products and services and greater opportunities to benefit members. After all, the financial success of members equals success for the organization. Thanks to the support of more than 1.9 million member-owners, SECU maintained financial stability and growth in fiscal year 2014. Assets, loans, deposits and capital experienced continued growth, and loan delinquencies and losses remained low. A quality loan portfolio is in place, along with safe, liquid investment holdings, strong earnings, substantial loan loss reserves, ample capital and no debt. Safety and soundness are key for the cooperative, but another important measure is member satisfaction. Results of SECU’s 2014 Membership Survey revealed 98% of members were satisfied with their Credit Union’s quality of service this past year, and 75% consider SECU as their primary financial institution – a figure that is well above industry peers. State Employees’ Credit Union also received the top consumer advocacy ranking in a recent Forrester Research report, Customer Advocacy 2013: How U.S. Consumers Rate Their Financial Firms, indicating 82% of SECU members agree their “financial provider does what’s best for me, not just its own bottom line.” There really is no greater measure of success than members’ acknowledgement of the Credit Union difference, recognition that SECU is ready to help them face financial challenges and achieve greater financial stability for themselves and their families. 14 Growth in Membership In Millions 5-year Asset Growth In Billions 1.91 28.6 1.61 21.04 Fiscal Year Fiscal Year State Employees’ Credit Union Consolidated Statements of Income & Undivided Earnings Years Ended June 30, 2014 and 2013 Interest Income 2014 $ 2013 740,230,295 $702,019,016 Interest Expense (252,407,461) (219,971,092) Net Interest Income 487,822,834 482,047,924 Fee Income 211,764,730 171,082,611 Operating Expense (473,875,776) (469,302,542) Provision for Loan Losses (20,032,500) (55,000,000) Net Income 205,679,288 128,827,993 Transfers to Reserves (205,000,000) (129,000,000) Assets Beginning of Year 600,624 $ 1,279,912 772,631 $ 600,624 2014 2013 Cash, Investments $ 12,018,170,821 $ 11,916,108,921 Loans to Members 15,572,072,403 13,839,037,716 47,179,127 46,158,681 Property & Equipment 650,492,843 604,422,430 Deposit for Insurance of Accounts 233,384,513 220,112,046 Other Assets 124,054,982 121,399,566 Total Assets $ 28,645,354,689 $ 26,747,239,360 $ 2,755,832,477 $ 2,679,952,595 23,694,620,925 22,066,416,010 Accrued Interest Payable 14,414,634 11,633,245 Other Liabilities 36,189,982 59,074,914 2,144,296,671 1,930,162,596 $ 28,645,354,689 $ 26,747,239,360 Accrued Interest Receivable Liabilities & Reserves Checking Accounts Share Accounts Undivided Earnings End of Year State Employees’ Credit Union Consolidated Balance Sheets June 30, 2014 and 2013 Reserves/Undivided Earnings Total Liabilities & Reserves 15 SECU Foundation Difference Chartered in 2004, SECU Foundation makes a measurable difference for North Carolina citizens with high impact projects in the areas of education, housing, healthcare and human services. Through the deferment of their monthly $1 checking account maintenance fee, Credit Union members are indeed having a profound effect, providing millions of dollars annually to help fund worthwhile projects all across the State. During the past ten years, Foundation projects such as scholarships, hospice houses, numerous teacher housing initiatives and a cancer center, just to name a few, have been far-reaching, making a profound impact on the lives of many North Carolinians. In late 2013, SECU member and Newport resident Joe Lynch had no idea that a Foundation project he helped fund would soon provide a great source of support and comfort for him and his wife Linda, a long-term Alzheimer’s patient. At the onset of her disease, Mr. Lynch was able to care for his wife at home, but later needed the additional services of a care facility located in New Bern, N.C. As her disease progressed, she eventually needed acute care, which wasn’t provided in New Bern. Unsure where to turn, Mr. Lynch inquired with hospital staff about local hospice services. What a relief it was to find those services available in his hometown at SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House, a place that had just opened a few months earlier! Similarly, SECU member Karen Baggott and her husband Jerry also felt the benefit of SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House not long after it opened. Her husband had been diagnosed several years earlier with a brain tumor. After a hard fought battle, the disease eventually affected his mobility and he ultimately required hospice services. As a Credit Union member and local Morehead City resident, Mrs. Baggott was aware that a new hospice care facility had opened in the area and was thankful her husband would have needed services close to home. 16 “I cannot emphasize enough what great care my wife received while she was at SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House. This place was a real blessing to us and I had no idea it was the only hospice facility serving a five county area. I was fortunate I lived close by and could visit daily. Places like this are truly needed and I’m glad SECU members are helping to make a difference. Being member-owned, the Credit Union is like a family, and I believe hospice initiatives are an ideal outreach for SECU Foundation because hospice is also very family-oriented.” Joe Lynch Pictured with his and his wife’s butterfly collection, which Mr. Lynch donated to SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House in her memory. “We moved in and it became our ‘home away from home.’ He was made very comfortable and we received a lot of good information and care right from the start. They allowed me to be a partner in his care and valued my opinion and decision to make a change if I felt one was needed, making it an optimum situation. I think it’s fantastic that through the Foundation, SECU members supported Crystal Coast Hospice House and played a critical role in bringing hospice services to Newport.” Karen Baggott 17 Value of Volunteers As a not-for-profit cooperative owned by its members, State Employees’ Credit Union is very different from other financial institutions. The purpose, the philosophy, the services are all memberfocused, and SECU’s 3,200+ volunteers ensure that focus stays on target. The Credit Union Board of Directors, Advisory Boards, Audit Committee, Member Loan Review Committees and Secret Shoppers are member-owners who serve without compensation to represent and provide a clear voice for their fellow members. While it is difficult to measure the value volunteers hold at the Credit Union, priceless might sum it up best! “As a member, I measure the Credit Union against other financial institutions. SECU is there to help members, while other financial institutions appear to see customers as a way to make money. I enjoy volunteering for an organization that has its members’ best interests at heart, looks for solutions to challenges we face and values what we have to say about the products and services offered.” Stephanie Jenkins, Zebulon Advisory Board 18 Zebulon Advisory Board 19 2013 – 2014 Board of Directors 20 Jim Johnson Chairman Jo Anne Sanford Secretary/Treasurer Bob Brinson Tom King Cynthia Jolly Vice Chairman Jim Barber Karan Bunn Bob Parker Shirley Bell David King McKinley Wooten, Jr. Audit Committee Bob Brinson, Chairman Shirley Bell Mark Foster Tom King Sam Newman Bob Parker McKinley Wooten, Jr. Advisory Boards Ahoskie Apex Albemarle Archdale Teikeshia Archer Georgia Copeland Dennis Deloatch Linda Futrell Kathryn Genao Reuben Gunnells Lorraine Holloman* Lydia McKeel Betty Pugh Sharon Roehl Byron Simonds Stan Warren Kelly Caudle* Michael Crump Tony Cunningham Marty Dickens* Jazmin Aviles Garcia* Susan Harward* Jon–Michael Haymond* Ben Misenheimer Lauren Patterson Mika Rogers Clent Stevens* Sharean Williams Suellen Beaulieu* Kathy Block Stephen Brink Gary Cartwright George Cooper Randy Cotten Russell Duncan, Jr. Allen Ellzey Cindy Loftin William Long* Johnsie Robinson Pamela Taylor Kathy Allen Roy Allen Jane Black Carol Cable Judy Garner* Doug Monroe Stephen Myers Kaye Spencer Kim Summers Tammie Swaim Rhonda Winters Misty Wolfe Arden Norman Black III Mark Corbin Betty Garner Robert Grayson Craig Harris Leslie Hawes Mary Hipps Lewis Lightner Dan McCormick* James Miles, Jr. Richard Setliff Karen Sumner Tracy Warren Asheboro Timothy Allgood Rod Hackney Tasha Hall Susan Hayes Cathy Hefferin Robin Jones Devon McKinnon Dana Nance John Reid Brian Saunders Barbara Dunn Swanson Marty Trotter* *Member Loan Review Committee 21 Asheville– Biltmore Village Ray Bailey George Briggs David Galloway Max Haner Harvey Haynes* Olson Huff Eric Hutzler Nick Lanier Larry Liggett* Linda McDaniel Stephen Noblitt Mary Parker Wilma Sherrill Susanne Swanger Sharon West David Wyatt* Asheville– Long Shoals Carolyn Baldwin* John Barbour Jan Blunt* Linda Bradley Kevin Brandon* Neil Denman Sheila Gibbs William Hallman* Marty Haney Allen Johnson Richard Mauney Kathy Noyes Arbie Rhodes 22 Asheville– Oak Plaza Robert Christy James Coman Stephanie Cyrus Kevan Frazier Cynthia Lopez Diana Love Skye Myrick* Marcia Perry Kenneth Putnam Nancy Reid Amanda Stone Kenneth Wilson Asheville– Smokey Park Hwy.
