AP US II Summer Assignments
To prepare for the start of your junior year in AP US II you must
complete the summer reading assignment, which is to read The Jungle and Ch.26 in The American Pageant
textbook as well as complete the unit sheet for Ch. 26.
The unit sheet will be collected on the first day of class.
You should be prepared for a multiple choice test and an essay in the first week of school.
The assignments are:
1)
The American Pageant- Ch. 26 Unit Sheet
• Due the FIRST DAY of class:
• For each question it is strongly suggested that you formulate your answer with
historical context, thesis, and evidence. For each term you should provide the
definition and significance. This will be collected and graded.
è Be prepared for a TEST on the chapter
2)
The Jungle – Upton Sinclair
• In the FIRST WEEK of class:
• Upton Sinclair writes about the experiences of laborers and immigrants to the USA
plus industrialization, the growth of cities, political graft, and the emergence of
socialism at the turn of the twentieth century. The Literature Network describes The
Jungle as “…a vivid portrait of life and death in an…American meat-packing
factory. A grim indictment that led to government regulations of the food industry,
The Jungle is Sinclair's extraordinary contribution to literature and social reform.”
è Be prepared for a TEST on the book, including an essay or DBQ

Period 6: AP Frameworks: 1865-1898 Ch.26
Themes:
Westward migration, new systems of
farming and transportation, and economic
instability led to political and popular
conflicts.
As transcontinental railroads were

Indians to reservations, and assimilationist
policies reduced the number of American
Indians and threatened native culture and
identity.
Essential Questions:
1. Describe the conflict between corporations and conservationists with regard to
natural resources. Was the environmental conflict in this time period unique, or a
continuation?
2. How did technological innovations alter the nature of farming? Did this hurt or
benefit most farmers? How did farmers respond to these changes?
3. Was the Populist Party successful in achieving its stated goals?
