This rule asks us to consider where we are and what we should do at a certain time. These three things must be considered in all of our behaviours. Right Place means that we think about the environment that we are in. We behave differently when we are in a classroom, on the playground or in the Church. It is normal to change our behaviour depending on where we are. Self-Reflecting and asking ourselves what the right actions are before we do something helps us to think about what impact our actions will have on us and others. If we are going to do something that will make ourselves and others unsafe or unhappy then we need to make a decision to stop. Try to ask yourself this week ‘Is this the place and time for my behaviour?’ Semester One Achievements This semester has been an extremely busy one filled with fun and learning. Thank you to all those parents, teachers and students who have made the start of the year so wonderful. Below is a list of some of the great achievements. • Flarana Fair • P&F Disco and Movie Night • Report cards • Swimming and Cross Country Carnivals • Excursions to Australia Zoo, Caboolture Historical Village, Ngutana Lui Aboriginal Centre. Zone 6 Sport and Gala Day Over the past 9 weeks our Senior Primary (Yr 5, 6, 7) students have been competing in Zone 6 Sport against other Catholic schools on the north side. Our students learnt a new set of skills; how to play fairly, be humble winners and gracious in defeat. We were extremely competitive in netball and touch. I would like to thank Maria McArdle for being the driver behind this great opportunity for the students. I would also like to thank Mrs Hill, Mrs Toohey, Mrs Graham and Mrs Wilkins for their time in training and supervising the students each Thursday. Last Thursday was the culmination with a Gala Day competition. I am very proud to say that two of our touch football teams made the finals, Yr 6/7 girls and Yr 5 Boys, but were beaten in close matches. Our Yr 5A mixed Netball team where champions and won their final. Please congratulate them all. Further information and pictures are below in the newsletter. I look forward to seeing students back on Monday 14 July with bright, fresh, smiling faces. Regards Paul Mitchell | Principal APRE News World Refugee Day I was a stranger and you welcomed me (Matthew 25:35) Last week was World Refuge week. The purpose of this was to raise awareness about the issues affecting refugees and celebrate the positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society. As a Catholic School it is important we recall what this means and what we value and teach about this as an arm of the Catholic faith: We teach: Human life is sacred because each person is created in the image and likeness of God That all people have the right to live a dignified life in their homeland Anyone whose life is threatened (via armed conflicts, natural disasters, economic conditions that threaten lives or physical integrity) has the right to protection All nations have a right to regulate migration across their borders That the purpose of law is to serve justice and mercy That the most vulnerable people are not simply those who are in a needy situation to whom we kindly offer an act of solidarity but are members of our family with whom we have a duty to share the resources we have. St Vincent de Paul Winter Soup Appeal and Sleep Out Each Year, St Flannan’s proudly supports the St Vincent de Paul Winter Soup Appeal. This runs for two weeks, where students are encouraged to bring in as many tins or packets of soup that they can to support those families in need. All the soup is distributed amongst families in our local community through the parish St Vincent de Paul Committee. The collecting of the soup will start in the first week back of term 3, leading up to Catholic Education Week and our own St Vinnies Sleep out being held on Thursday 31 July for our Senior Primary Students. Over the holidays as you see soup on special at the shops, it might be a great opportunity to get organized and stock up ready to bring it all in. Pope John Paul II invited all to an even deeper awareness of the mission of the Catholic Church: to see Christ in every brother and sister in need, to proclaim and defend the dignity of every migrant, every displaced person and every refugee. In this way assistance given will not be considered an alms from the goodness of our heart, but an act of justice due to them. We pray…. For the millions of men, women and children who, for various reasons, have known the experience of migration or seeking asylum. That those entrusted with the power of decision may never forget that every migrant is a human person who possesses fundamental, inalienable rights that must be respected by everyone and in every circumstance”. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord, Amen. What Saint inspires you? This is not a question you may be asked too much in our secular world. Do you have a favourite saint that has inspired you in your life? How often would you make the time to stop and reflect on the life of that saint how they have influenced who you are? Whilst there is little written on St Flannan, we do know that he was very educated and valued the importance of learning. He shared with others the importance of observing justice, especially human justice, encouraging them to live in peace with one another. This is certainly something that we aspire to here at St Flannan’s each day. 60 Year Celebration – Catering Assistance Thank you all those who have kindly offered to bring in a platter of something for our shared lunch after the Celebration Mass. We are still seeking support for this as it is expected that we will be feeding over 100 guests. If you haven’t returned your slip to say that you are able to bring something in, please feel free to just call the office and register with us directly what you can contribute, or return your form to the office. We also need to ensure that people have RSVP to say if they are attending as we want to make sure we have enough seats for everyone. Thank you for your continued support in this wonderful occasion. A special thank you goes to Maria Russo from Dancefever who has kindly donated $300 towards the catering of our lunch 3 for after our celebration Mass. This will certainly makes some beautiful platters of sandwiches for all to enjoy! Term 3 Dance Fever In Term 3, all students from Prep – 7 will be participating on a Monday in our Dance Fever Lessons. The Company has also expanded, with the development of Gymnastics, Athletics and Skipping Programs by Head of Sport, Matt Russo, a past student of St Flannans. Dancefever is very proud to say that it has employed seven students from Catholic Schools around Brisbane who were involved in Dancefever whilst at school. I asked Miss K to write for us about what she did and what she learnt and below are some photos and a bit about her journey. It was an incredible effort for a wonderful cause and we congratulate her on this wonderful achievement – not to mention she showed up to school Monday morning with her beautiful big smile ready to go!! ‘I made the 100km!! We began the walk at the top of Mount Glorious, then walked down and then up into Mount Nebo, then onto Lake Manchester, Bellbird Grove, Enoggera Dam through to Corramulling park and then onto Mt Cootha! It was fantastic to watch each team improve over the term and really enjoy the competition side of sport. On Gala day our teams competed with enthusiasm and showed great sportsmanship. The experience of the weeks leading up to Gala day paid off and we fielded two teams in the finals. The standouts for the day were Ryan Sanker’s defence on the wing and Mitchell Stanton’s hat trick. The year 5 boys and the 6/7 girls both finished as runner up finalists. It was a great experience for the students as well as for the teachers and school officers who helped out. Our students were excellent representatives of St Flannan’s and its mission. They should all be very proud of themselves! It was one of the most mentally challenging activities I have ever done! It was such a great experience and one I will never forget! It was a physically challenge, and my feet were very sore once we hit the 50km, so sore that I wanted to cry! I had to mentally prepare myself for the rest of the walk and literally got to know the term 'no pain no gain'. So it was from this I learnt that of you can overcome the mental challenge you can conquer anything! It's amazing how much our bodies can do! Unfortunately we lost one team member due to her having sore knees so we had to push on without her and regrouped at the finish! We raised approximately $4200 dollars for Oxfam who do such wonderful work and are still receiving donations from people so it could be even more! It has been great to have so much support from people’ DDJ Awards DDJ Music Awards signify excellence in performing, practicing, commitment and overall musicianship from a student.
