An Index of the Cons 488/32 Convict related Letters of Captain Charles Fitzgerald RN 12 October 1854 — c. 4 July 1855 and Arthur Edward Kennedy c. 5 July 1855 — 30 April 1858 compiled by B and A Buchanan 2005 Introduction The 3045 letters of Cons 488/32 comprise some 520 letters from Fitzgerald, the remainder being from his replacement. Kennedy tended to express his personal views less, writing more directly but less interestingly. Kennedy, like his predecessor, continued to promote development despite insufficient funds and/or labour, with an administration deficient in competence. How to Use the Index The pages of the letter book are not numbered. The letters are numbered and commence with 1694 to 1704. These letters appear to be a continuation from 488/31 which concludes at letter 1466. If so, some letters are lost. The initial eleven letter numbers (1694-1704) are later replicated in a new number series and the initial (or continuation) letter numbers are marked in the Indexes with an * . The new number series has some omissions of number, some extra ‘a’ numbers and some repeated numbers, but letters may be found readily using the letter numbers; but note the use of * above. 1694 to 1704 1 to 83 83a 84 to 276 278 to 462 464 to 611 611a 612 to 741 744 to 809 811 to 936 940 to 1007 1007a 1008 to 1031 1031a 1032 to 1123 1125 to 1165 1165a 1166 to 1255 1257 to 1377 1375a to 1377a 1378 to 1465 1467 to 1509 1509a 1510 to 1722 1722 (repeated number) 1723 to 1743 1747 to 1909 1909 (repeated number) 1910 to 1933 1933 (repeated number) 1934 to 2043 Contents 1. Remuneration Index 57 *Notes In the Theme-topic Index convict/convicts references are listed under the heading ‘Convicts’, unless it is evident a reference is to a ‘Ticket of Leave’ person/s, who are listed under that heading. Any general consideration of transported persons needs examine both headings, Convicts and Ticket of Leave. The Theme-topic Index contains a section entitled “Administration: general”. This heading lists those letters of which the import is unclear, generally because reference is made to other correspondence not within Cons 488/32. 1 Addressee Index Addressee Index The following letter numbers list all those to whom letters were addressed, excluding the Comptroller-General. 1082 letters were addressed to the Comptroller-General. He took leave from 26 February 1856 until 1 February 1858 and c. 918 letters were addressed to the Acting CG, although many letters in the leave period were 'incorrectly' addressed to the CG. letter Most names in the Letters lack initials or given names. Idiosyncratic spelling and poor writing add to identification difficulties. Both initials and RN [Register Numbers] have been ascribed where possible. Names in italics are those who seem to be convicts or prisoners. Names in normal type are of settlers, soldiers or government staff. Convicts [in italics below] may have been employed by Government at some time and therefore be shown both in normal type as well as italics. Absence of initials or RN means identification to be uncertain without further inquiry. Convicts [both 'Colonial' and from UK] have a full given name [where known] if the RN is unknown. Names with an * are included in Barker, D J [see page 43]. Identifications should be checked. Particularly: 1. the same name with an entry in both italics and in normal type. 2. the same name with an entry with initials and an entry without them. letter Adams, J [3388] letter Arden, G F (Dr.) 547 1176 1829 Ball [DACG] 1832 1973 Bannon, P * Adams, T [1344] 116 123 Adams, T C [131] letter Bailey, T (Sergeant) * Ashton, E [901] 437 989 Atkins, A [2635] Ambury, J [3524] 1185 1556 147 55 Bare, T [3175] 617 1118 Barnett, E [1800] 814 Attfield, G (Dr) Amos, E [1359] 1546 Anderson, G (Private) * 1214 1226 Austin, R Andrews, J [4207] 1849 Annear, D * Bacjonx (Dr.) 1683 1902 Bagshaw, J 1756 1847 Barnett, W [395] 1881 1933 Barnie, G * 422 468 476 1232 266 Barrett, R [3300] 764 2025 2033 1682 Barry, R [314] 1714 1182 Barry, Z (Reverend) 736 1456 29 Names Index letter Bateman, J Bateman, W Baughan, W Bayley, L J letter Bollan, J [1546] 799 1136 Bowyer, R [134] 1795 Bradford, J [3222] 799 Brennan, J [2331] 372 Brider, J J [1342] 1158 1162 Bridge, J [422] 1884 1889 Bristow, R [50] Beadmore, J [1707] letter Brown, M [2606] 1811 1045 1065 1072 1254 Brown, R McB 1418 1408 Brown, T 645 329 1101 1133 1952 868 516 Brown, T [1566] 409 probably same 915 1656 1353 Britt, P * Bell, A * 1073 Brownrigg, M [2563] 12 Brockman, W L 70 92 99 100 107 260 Bell, J 291 Bell, J [2054] 691 Bell, R 1393 Benson, M * 1835 Berwick, J H [912] 254 1365 Bickley, S W A 894 1386 Birnie, R (Advocate Gen) 1099 1141 1331 1332 Bland, T [2842] 1087 Bobin, J 1081 521 176 Bruce, J (Major) 191 62 305 76 400 Bruce, J (Lt.
