Reunions
This past winter was unpredictable and incredibly harsh. With record
setting snow falls and several days with temperatures below zero,
it certainly was a winter to remember with 17 days of school being
cancelled. While many will remember the winter because of the
weather outside, those at Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School and St.
Kateri Catholic Academy will remember the great year it was with the
students.
During the final semester of school, students of all ages accomplished
a number of great things. In the Academy, the eighth grade science
projects were superb with a lot of innovative hypothesis’ tested.
High school students put on a great show at the annual Cabaret. And
students throughout St. Kateri Catholic Schools put on the musical
Oliver at the end of April, and it was yet another great performance by
our students.
Finally, our seniors will be graduating in just a few short weeks and
most of them will be going on to college. We could not be more proud
of this group of seniors as they move on to the next chapter of their
lives. They have accomplished many goals in the classroom, sports
fields and in the community and the entire staff congratulates them on
these achievements. As they move on, we cannot wait to see how they
become leaders through faith, knowledge, and strength.
As the school year comes to a close, our enrollment numbers for next
year look very positive. The number of new students who have applied
for next year is a great sign that people throughout Northwestern Ohio
and Southeastern Michigan are recognizing the great things we are
doing and want to be a part of the Cardinal Family.

FE E LI NG THE LOVE OF CHRIST
A calling to
S
God.
ince the school
opened in
1961, Cardinal
Stritch Catholic
High School
has had three
students ordained into the
priesthood –
Father Bill Rose ’85,
Father Doug Garand
’85 and Father Chris
Bohnsack ’87.
All three men said they
first received the calling
to pursue a life devoted
to Christ at a very young
age. But when and how
each of them decided to
act upon the calling vary
greatly.
PURSUING
THE CALL
Fr. Bill was the
first graduate
from Stritch to
pursue the calling
to Priesthood.
After earning a
communications
degree from the University of Toledo,
he was working for the Catholic
Chronicle when the calling to the
Priesthood was strong enough for
him to act upon it.
After attending Mount St. Mary’s
in Cincinnati for six years, he was
ordained on June 8, 1996. And it is a
date that is forever ingrained in his
memory.
“It’s a very significant date. You
remember your ordination date,” said
Fr. Bill. “I do always remember and
I do always try to have mass on the
anniversary of my priestly ordination.
It is a significant day in my life, the
day I did become a priest. And one of
the significant components of being
a priest is being able to celebrate the
mass and to provide the Eucharist for
the people of God.”
Fr. Rose is the pastor at Christ the
King Catholic Parish in Toledo.
“I loved my time at Stritch,”
said Fr. Bill. “I still have
many friends that I
still communicate with
regularly.”
2
A STRONGHOLD
Like Fr. Bill,
Fr. Doug Garand
was working
within the realms
of the Catholic
Church, too, when
he took to the
path of Christ.
He was working for the youth ministry
department of The Catholic Diocese of
Toledo in 1993. During that year, while
attending Saturday night mass, the
calling to the priesthood took a strong
hold on Fr. Doug when a reading from
Chapter 10 of Matthew was read at
Mass that evening.
“I always appreciated
Catholic education because
it kept Christ present for
me”, said Fr. Chris.
ROLE OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION
While the age at which all three men
decided to join the seminary varies
greatly, the first time in which they all
first considered a life as a priest is very
similar. Each of them were in grade
school and attending a Catholic school.
“It was one of those God moments
and conversion moments,” said
Fr. Doug. “I realized I needed to go
to the seminary.”
Throughout all of their young lives, all
three men agreed that their time in
Catholic schools built the foundation for
their love of Christ.
Fr. Garand is the Associate Pastor
at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in
Toledo and St. Richard Catholic Church
in Swanton. In July, Fr. Doug will be
the Pastor at St. Augustine Catholic
Church, in Napoleon, Ohio.
“I always appreciated Catholic
education because it kept Christ
present for me,” said Fr. Chris. “It was
a reminder that going to mass was
important.”
A CALLING TO
FOLLOW THROUGH
For Fr. Chris,
the calling came
later in life. After
graduating from
Bowling Green
State University,
Bohnsack worked
for a local grocery store chain and also
did some security work on the side.
Though becoming a Priest was
something he had always considered
throughout his life, it wasn’t until he
was at a parish function at his church
that we was struck with the notion to
follow through with his calling.
Fr. Bohnsack is the Associate Pastor at
St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic
Church in Delphos.
While at Stritch, all three men were
typical students in their class. Their
best memories are of the friendships
they made with classmates and of the
faculty and staff at the school.
All three said some of their best
memories came in high school.
Whether is was Fr. Bill thinking about
being razzed for turning off the
lights in biology class, or Fr. Doug
remembering how he survived German
class, the three of them all agreed that
their time at Stritch was unforgettable.
“I loved my time at Stritch,” said
Fr. Bill. “I still have many friends that I
still communicate with regularly.”
Worth the wait.
Casey Flowers ’14 made the decision to commit himself to follow a life in the priesthood.
THE FUTURE
In the fall of 2013, senior Casey
Flowers ‘14 made the decision to
commit himself to follow a life in the
priesthood. He applied for the seminary
in October and received his acceptance
into Pontifical College Josephinum in
February of this year.
While the decision was a big one for
Flowers, his classmates were not
surprised by this decision to dedicate
his life to Christ.
“Most of (my classmates) were not
shocked. They kind of knew it all along,”
said Flowers. “I was actually a little
surprised that no one was shocked.”
Like the priests who have graduated
from Stritch in the past, the thought of
going to the seminary has been fixed
in Flower’s mind since he was a child.
The idea first entered his mind when he
was just 4 years old and was attending
mass with his family. But he didn’t
seriously consider the vocation until he
was in high school.
During his time at Stritch, Flowers
has attended countless retreats and
been a server at nearly every mass
at the school. He also helps out with
various events for both Stritch and
the Academy on a regular basis. But
it wasn’t until a meeting with Fr. Eric
Schild, the President of St. Kateri
Catholic Schools, that Casey acted on
his calling.
“Fr. Eric was the one who came up to
me. I was in his office and he said, ‘Okay
Casey, let’s get serious about this,’ and
we made a phone call to get things
started,” said Flowers.
The path to being accepted to the
seminary was a busy one. Flowers
had to fill out pages of paperwork and
go through rigorous interviews before
having to wait months to find out if
he was accepted. But the reward was
worth the wait.
“It’s a relief off my shoulders,” said
Flowers. “Looking back, I didn’t really
have anything to worry about, but there
isn’t any stress any more.”

Adams reaches
milestone with Stritch
Emily Turski ’14 to play
golf at Cleveland State
Austin Adams had a big year for the Cardinal Stritch
Catholic High School basketball team. He was the
leading scorer for the boys team in nearly every game
this past season and has been heavily recruited by
colleges across the nation.
A goal for many high school athletes is to play for a
Division I college after their high school days have come
to an end. The chances of that dream coming true is often
very slim.
The standout season led to the junior reaching a couple
of major milestones in February. On Feb. 4, Adams
recorded a school record 44 points in a game against
Northwood, and on Feb. 14, he reached the 1,000 point
plateau for his high school career.
In the game against Northwood, Adams made 17 fieldgoals and was 10-of-12 from the free-throw line when
he set the single game record. The 17 field-goals was a
season best for him.
Adams made a layup to surpass the 1,000 career point
total for his high school career during the third quarter
of a game against Ottawa hills less than two weeks later.
He is just the third player in school history to reach that
mark, and is the first to do so since Eric McCloskey, who
achieved the feat during the 06-07 season. Joe Gajdostik
is the only other player in Stritch history to reach the
1,000 point mark, and did so during the ‘85-‘86.
Adams is the first player from Stritch to reach the mark
during his junior year.
“It feels good. It was a lot of hard work that paid off,”
said Adams. “It feels great to (score the 1,000th point) at
home. Everyone came out to support me and my family
came out to support me, too.”
“It was a
lot of hard
work that
paid off.”

That is, unless, you are part of the Turski family.
Emily Turski , a senior at Cardinal Stritch Catholic High
School, recently announced that she will be playing golf
for Cleveland State in the fall. She is the second family
member in two years to commit to a Div. I college for
athletics.
Her sister, Katie,
began playing softball
for Bowling Green
State University this
season after spending
a year at Owens
Community College.
“This is a
great
opportunity.”
“I didn’t necessarily
start out thinking
I wanted to golf in
college, but everything
just fell into place,” said Emily. “It all happened so fast.
I just thought I wanted to go to college just solely for
academics because I want to go to med school. But then
this opportunity came up and I didn’t want to let it go.”
Emily was contacted by some Division II and Division III
colleges to play golf, but none of them seemed to be a
good fit because they did not have the undergraduate
degree she wants to pursue. For most of the academic
year, Turski thought she would attend the University of
Toledo.
But then she was contacted by Cleveland State with an
offer to play golf. After some encouraging words from her
older sister and a great deal of debating, Emily decided to
jump on the offer from Cleveland State.
“I knew then that if I didn’t play, I would regret it, so it was
always a constant battle. I knew I would never have the
opportunity to ever play college golf again, so I definitely
think it is a great opportunity,” said Emily.
“(Katie) loves her team, the new coaches and the
atmosphere of traveling with her team,” Emily continued.
“It blew her mind how awesome it was when she became
a player for BG, so when she told me how awesome it was,
I thought ‘Maybe this is the way I should go.’”

Feet to the
T
he list of
accomplishments Tim
Croak ’78 has achieved
throughout his career
is a long one. The
1978 Cardinal Stritch
Catholic High School
graduate manages
a financial services
business that directs
$300 million in assets, has his own firm
within that entity and has travelled the
world. And he has done it all while being a
family man with a wife and two children.
A natural.
The faculty taught
me about
life
While there are a number of things that
have contributed to his success, he is quick
to acknowledge that his time at Stritch
was one of the main keys to laying out the
foundation for his future.
The faculty and student body each played
a role into making his experience at Stritch
a memorable one.
As a student, Croak was a leader in many
areas of the school. He was the captain of
the football team his senior year, held the
leading role in the musical that same year,
and was a member of the honor council
society.
But prior to becoming a forerunner, Croak
was an underclassman who observed the
actions of student leaders, which helped
mold him into the standout he would
become as an upperclassman. This was
especially true on the football field.
as well.
Board President at St. Kateri Catholic School System and Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Treu House of Munch,
Rick Niehaus was instrumental in combining the grade school and high school on to one campus.
Tim Croak ’78 attributes his work ethic to his teachers at Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School.
“When I was a sophomore and junior
we had some outstanding seniors
that would lead us out on the football
field. It became the culture, and it was
passed on from one year to the next,”
said Croak. “As much as I wanted to do
well, my biggest motivation was that I
didn’t want to disappoint the leaders of
the team. And when I became an upper
classman, I wanted to make sure that
leadership was instilled into the people
who were coming up behind me.”
On the faculty side, Tim spoke highly
of many of his teachers and coaches,
including John Ross and Sr. Ann
Carmen. He remembered how the
faculty not only taught him lessons out
of books, but about life as well.
6
Being instilled with a strong work ethic
was a key trait Croak developed while
attending Stritch. But it was far from
being the only characteristic that led him
to become a successful businessman.
“Coming out of Stritch, it wasn’t just the
work ethic. The work ethic was part of
it, but it was a positive self-expectancy
that I expected out of myself and other
people expected out of me, that other
people had demanded of you,” said Croak.
“All of the faculty members, as a group,
really drove into us was the need to do
the job thorough, do it very well and put
your feet to the fire. By the time I went to
the University of Toledo, all of that was
ingrained so much that it became second
nature. What a blessing that was.”
W
hen some changes
were made to the
Cardinal Stritch
Catholic High School
board in 2007, Fr.
David Rhinehart, the
president of Cardinal
Stritch Catholic High School at the time,
selected the members by hand.
Among those chosen to serve on the
board was Rick Niehaus. He and his wife
Kathy (Demko) ‘78 were in the process of
sending all three of their children through
Catholic schools. Rick was also very active
at St. Stephen’s church and seemed like a
natural fit on the board.
Today, he is the board president for St.
Kateri Catholic Schools. Throughout his
time on the board, he has been a part
of many changes, including naming the
schools, solidifying the finances of SKCS
We love the school....it has
given great opportunities
to all three of our kids.
and helping increase enrollment. But the
crowning moment for Niehaus, was being
able to help combine a grade school and
high school into one building.
“At the time when we really looked at
it, there was a point when we thought it
could go in a direction where we would
end up without a Catholic school even
being open in Oregon,” said Niehaus. “We
were literally at that point where we could
do something and hopefully resurrect it,
or Catholic education in the East Toledo
community would have been very limited,
or wouldn’t be as easily accessible as it
needs to be.”
This year will mark the eighth year of
Niehaus’s involvement on the board,
but staying put in one place to ensure
growth is nothing new for him. Niehaus
has been at Treu House of Munch for
28 years, where he started as a sales
representative and has moved his way
up the ladder within the company and is
currently the Vice President of Retail and
Merchandising.
Rick and Kathy’s youngest child will be
graduating in 2015, and while he may not
have any children in SKCS soon, his time
as president will end next June. However,
Niehaus doesn’t plan to stop giving his
time to the school any time soon.
“I’ll stay involved in terms of being on sub
committees and definitely will stay active
on the athletic side as well,” said Niehaus.
“We love the school. It’s a small school,
it’s family oriented and it has given great
opportunities to all three of our kids.”
