The 2013 Annual Report
Letter from the Alumni
Association President
December 2013
Dear Fellow Bishop McDevitt Alumni:
Your Alumni Association continues to do great things for our alma mater!
We have a terrific group of dedicated officers and loyal volunteers who work
very hard to organize and run successful Alumni events, assist at school Open
Houses, attend and support functions at the school, recognize alumni who
have gone on to do notable things with their lives helping others, and most importantly, we help to raise funds to
provide scholarships to kids who want to attend Bishop McDevitt High School – just like we wanted to!
Although our core group of tireless volunteers continues to do phenomenal work on behalf of the Alumni Association,
we need YOU and we need more alums from ALL classes to join in the fun. Realizing everyone has a busy life, we are
looking for Class Representatives to help us get the word out about upcoming happenings or meetings, and to lend
a hand at an event or project. By just sending out emails to your list of alums, or sharing information on Facebook
-- on an as-needed basis -- it would help us tremendously get the word out to our 15,000+ Alumni! It’s that simple!
Please consider becoming a Class Rep for your graduation year. If you can help us, please email me at: [email protected] or send me a private message on Facebook. Your efforts will go a long way support our
alma mater, and it’s a simple way for each alum to give back to the school that provided so many of us with a great
education and foundation for life.
On behalf of the Alumni Officers, Beth Armbruster, ’85, Vice President, Brian Carter ’95, Treasurer, and Kathy
Lochner ’65, Secretary, I want to thank everyone who does so much to assist and promote Bishop McDevitt and the
Alumni Association. We couldn’t do what we do without you! And we strongly encourage you to join with us to
continue supporting our school. We also encourage your feedback and suggestions. Feel free to contact me at
any time.
Thank you for you continued support, and we hope to see you at an Alumni Association event soon!
Very truly yours,

Introducing...Firetruck
By Brendan Burke ‘77
The Robotics team completed its second season
by again reaching the Mid Atlantic Robotics
Championship, this year held at Lehigh University.
The team reached the finals of two district
competitions and won the Quality Award sponsored
by Motorola at the Chestnut Hill district event.
Before the season began in January, the team helped
spread the word about McDevitt’s commitment
to science and technology by bringing last year’s
Robot “Shark Byte” to various events including:
the Norristown Engineering Summer Camp,
the Glenside 4th of July Parade, the Rockwell
Automation Fair at the Pennsylvania Convention
Center, the Springfield Library “Robot Night”,
the Whissahicken Boys and Girls Club, Arcadia
University, and the Manor College Tech Club.
Last January, the robot competition organizers
announced the game for this year. The team was
charged with building a robot that can shoot Frisbees
at various sized targets and climb a pyramid. To
make things even harder, it had to be done in 6
weeks. The team built a robot named “Fire Truck”
that proved to be one of the most accurate Frisbee
shooters in the Mid-Atlantic region.
The robot uses a spinning wheel to propel the disks
along a curved surface toward the targets and hooks
to grab the pyramid cross bar to lift it off the ground.
(Videos are available at our website.)
At our first competition, held in Horsham, the
team joined the second seeded alliance and made
it all the way to the finals. In this event, we were
awarded “Best Autonomous” after we connected
on 57 of 60 shots in the highest goal using only
pre-programmed robot controls. In our second
competition at Chestnut Hill, we were the captain
of the 4th seeded alliance and again made it to the
finals. We also were awarded the Quality Award
sponsored by Motorola. The award is described as
follows:
The Motorola Quality Award celebrates machine
robustness in concept and fabrication. Winners
of this award have strong, well-built robots that
require little maintenance. Although the award
4
criteria do not include on-field performance,
winners of this award are typically among the
highest ranked teams at the competition. As durable
and reliable machines, the Motorola Quality Award
winning robots are effective competitors and valued
partners.
This outstanding performance gave us enough seeding
points to be one of 50 teams invited to the Mid-Atlantic
Regional championship. At the championship we had
some mechanical difficulties when our shooter mount
bracket broke. We rebuilt the bracket and the entire
shooting mechanism in just four hours. (A task that
took four days during build season.) Unfortunately,
the time lost during the rebuild kept us from gaining
enough ranking points to qualify for the World
Championship event. We finished the season ranked
20th in PA, NJ, and Del. (The top 13 made it to Worlds).
The team would like to thank our sponsors for making
our season a tremendous success: Lockheed Martin,
Qinetiq-NA, NASA, Comcast, Arcadia University, and
the McDevitt Alumni Association.
For more information about the team go to
their web site http://robotics.mcdevitths.org/
An Elected Offical in Our Midst
In an exercise in the voting process, Keri Davenport wrote
herself in as Judge of Elections on Election Day 2013. Over
the course of the day she received 12 votes and won the
position of Judge of Elections for ward 4-3 in Cheltenham.
The Judge of Elections resolves disputes and makes
determinations about voter eligibility in areas where the
law is ambiguous. The Judge also watches for problems
with electronic voting machines, and for other problems,
and reports them to officials and to the public. Later in
December, Keri will receive her official letter further
detailing her duties as the Judge of Elections including
taking classes.
Keri hopes to attend college in the area with her first choice
being Albright College in Reading, PA. She oringally
planned on studying economics while aspiring to be a
laywer, but after considering this win a “sign from God”
she intends to incorpate politics into her future plans.
Congratulations and Good Luck Keri!
The Phanatic Suprises Future Lancers
On Thursday, November 14th, Bishop McDevitt hosted over 165 8th Graders
from surrounding grade schools. Over twenty six different grades chools were
in attendance with the most students coming from St. Helena-Incarnation
(28), St. Joseph the Protector (21), and St. Anthanasius (19). Student
Ambassadors, Student Council members, and athletes were on hand acting
as tour guides. The day consisted of a shortened class schedule, an activities
demonstration, and an afternoon surprise guest - The Phillie Phanatic! Each
student had the chance to have his or her picture taken with the Phanatic. He
threw McDevitt rally towels into the crowd, while playfully tormenting the
faculty, staff, and student athletes. A great day was had by all! To see more
pictures of the Phanatic, visit www. mcdevitths.org.

A History-making Alumni Event!!
The Bishop McDevitt Alumni Association hosted the annual
Spring Fling fundraiser at the school on Saturday, April 6,
2013 and had a fantastic sell-out crowd!
Over 425
enthusiastic guests packed the auditorium on a beautiful
spring evening and danced the night away with special
celebrity-guest DJ, Jerry Blavat, commanding the tunes!
From the moment of his arrival, the Geator with the Heater
had the dance floor packed!
Alums from many graduating classes were in attendance,
and the Committee had alumni representatives from almost
every decade. Co-Chairs, Janean Shillington Adamson ’80,
and Robyn Bodman Killeen ’89, and the entire committee,
did a fantastic job orchestrating one the most successful
Alumni events ever. Butch Beal ’63 catered the meal – to
rave reviews.
So many had a hand in this year’s Spring Fling. Sincere
thanks goes to: Redmond McConnell ’77, Beth Armbruster
’85, Brian Carter ’95, Bill Carter ’69, Kathy Lochner ’65,
Susan Shea ’70, Mary Beth Driscoll ’80, Maryann Klady,
Linda Appel Carlin ’70, Regina Foy ‘72, Terri Gasbarra, Terri
Mahoney ‘89, Ken Stork ‘72, Bob Lounsberry ’76, Judy
Lounsberry ‘77, Pete Siegfried ‘73, and Kelly Keane,
McDevitt’s Director of Advancement. We are also grateful
to our many sponsors, everyone who helped with the raffle
prizes, the volunteers the night of the event, and all of the
student volunteers. Finally, thanks to the Bishop McDevitt
administration and staff as well as the numerous current
students who volunteered with setup, hospitality,
registration, and cleanup. The event was truly a show on the
Best of McDevitt!
Funds raised at this year’s Spring Fling, and other alumni
events, go to student scholarships and other projects
supported by the Alumni Association.

Honors Biology gets a Taste of College
By Matt Jurkiewicz
Throughout the Fall semester, the freshman and sophomore Honors Biology class at Bishop McDevitt High School
became the first class to participate in a program that partnered McDevitt students with faculty and students from
the Biology Department at Saint Joseph’s University. Two faculty members of the Saint Joseph’s Biology Department,
Dr. Edwin Li, Assistant Professor of Biology, and Dr. Brian Forster, General Education Lab Coordinator, teamed with
Miss Caitlin Fritz, Science Education Outreach Coordinator, Mr. Matthew Jurkiewicz, McDevitt biology teacher, and
three undergraduate biology fellows to develop laboratory explorations that explored the genetic basis underlying
various human disorders. As a Saint Joseph’s alum, Mr. Jurkiewicz’ connection to the university (B.S. ’06, M.S. ‘07)
allowed his Honors Biology class to be the first high school class to be involved in this unique program.
The High School LINKS team from Saint Joseph’s traveled to McDevitt five times during October and November and
led the students through five different explorations that related directly to their coursework. The thirty students in
the Honors Biology class were constantly engaged in the 90-minute lab activities that featured complex techniques
such as:
agarose gel electrophoresis
DNA transcription and translation examinations
secondary and tertiary protein structure modeling
pGLO plasmid bacteria examinations
enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay
The program culminated in a visit to Saint Joseph’s Biology Department on Wednesday, November 20. In the morning,
Drs. Li and Forster and the three St. Joseph’s students allowed McDevitt students to examine the chromosomal basis
of Down syndrome, cri du chat, and sickle-cell disease through karyotyping, protein function analysis, and a DNA
microarray. After lunch in the Saint Joseph’s cafeteria, the students were able to tour unique spots on campus,
view the a confocal microscope, speak with students in charge of research on zebrafish shoaling, and explore the
nationally-renowned biodiversity laboratory, which features dozes of species of frogs, turtles, and fish, including
several endangered species.
Student reaction to the High School LINKS program has been overwhelmingly positive. Mr. Jurkiewicz and the
students are extremely grateful for the expertise and effort of the students and faculty who developed the lab
experiments and to Miss Fritz, who was responsible for the original $2,000 grant that was used to hire undergraduate
student fellows and purchase essential supplies. Over the next few years, Saint Joseph’s hopes to expand the program
to include other topics, other high schools, and additional biology classes at Bishop McDevitt.

Habitat for Humanity
By Madeline Avallon ‘13 and Kelly Duddy ‘15
On July 21, 2013, seven students led by Mr. Krajczar went to York, Pennsylvania to volunteer for Habitat for
Humanity. As the first Habitat trip in McDevitt history, it was a huge success! Through the organization of
Jessica Gwiszcz ’14, the group fundraised for months to pay for their trip. This group consisted of Madeline
Avallon ‘13, Charles Ireland ‘13, Claire Meaney ‘13, Jessica Sariego ‘13, Kelly Kehres ‘15, Samantha Lamina ‘15,
President Jessica Gwiszcz ‘14, and chaperones Mr. JR Krajczar, Jen Gwiszcz and Jackie Gwiszcz.
The trip began with the volunteers reorganizing the Habitat warehouse. From lifting doors to moving 2x4’s,
the first day was tiring, yet satisfying. For the rest of the week, the students worked on demolition under
the guidance of Jeff Beasley. They knocked down walls and ceilings, broke through closets and stairs, and
demolished the beams and rotting wood. While working on deconstruction, the students had the chance
to meet the family who will reside in the new home. The students and family worked together to build the
house.
In their free time, Jeff, the site supervisor, showed the volunteers around York, PA. The students had the
opportunity to hike at Highpoint and Chickies Rock and watch the movie “Wreck It Ralph” in the park.
At the retreat center, where they resided for the week, the students played games, completed puzzles, and
participated in other fun activities. Overall, the trip was a huge success! All the students were grateful for
this opportunity and are looking forward to a fun and memorable time next year.

Letter from the President
Dear Alumni and Friends,
The 2012-13 school year was an exciting time at Bishop McDevitt. Ninety seven percent of our graduates
moved on to college and earned over $13.5 million in grants and scholarships. Our boys basketball team
won their first playoff game in nine years, the wrestling team was Region 12 Champions, and seven of our
teams made the PCL playoffs. Our robotics team once again advanced to the Regional Competition, we
successfully restarted our debate team, and the Royal Masque did a superb presentation of Beauty and the
Beast. All in all, a year to be proud of.
The 2013-14 year is off to a good start with 122 new Lancers joining us as freshman. This represents a 14
student increase versus the year before and, to some measure, was a result of the generosity of our alumni
and friends. Thanks to a significant increase in total giving, to $260,000, we were able to provide almost
60% of our freshman with merit based or need based financial aid.
As you are reading this, our Annual Giving campaign is in full swing. To be able to roll out our financial
assistance program across all four years (and continue to thrive as a school), we need to just about double
our total giving, to $500,000 by the 2015-16 school year. Our target for this year is $375,000.
If you have already made a gift, please accept my thanks for your support of the students of Bishop McDevitt.
If not, please consider a Christmas gift to your alma mater. In this way, you will help us insure that students
will receive a quality, Catholic education for years to come.
Don’t give until it hurts, just make a gift that will make you feel good! May God Bless you and your loved
ones as we celebrate the Christmas season.
Sincerely,
Steve Finley, ‘69
