An impressive 91,698 tons of air cargo moved through
Columbus’ growing international air cargo hub in
2016, making it a tremendous year for Rickenbacker
International Airport. International air freight was
up a significant 16 percent.
“The fact that our international tonnage in 2016
bested 2015 by double-digits shows that progressive
companies have come to understand the value
of moving air freight through Rickenbacker,”
said Bryan Schreiber, Manager of Business
Development at Rickenbacker. “Over the past
three years, international cargo tonnage at
Rickenbacker, which used to be just 10 percent
of the airport’s total cargo is up 317 percent
as we’ve added more premier freighter
operators each year.”

Rickenbacker air cargo has
an outstanding year
The expansion is necessary to keep up with
the increasing demand for services. Also, the
new technology and automated processes
that come with the expansion will ease the
physical burden placed on UPS employees.
According to UPS, the Columbus
hub delivered more than 700 million
packages in 2016, a million more
than in 2015. The expansion will
help ensure packages are delivered
on time, especially throughout
the holiday season. In addition
to robust ground activity, UPS
operates two nightly package
fl ights from LCK and this
number increases greatly
during peak season.
ODW opens new corporate
headquarters in Columbus
ODW Logistics recently opened its beautiful new headquarters in the historic
Buggyworks building in downtown Columbus. The move was intended to
support business expansion after outgrowing its existing footprint. While
ODW’s bustling warehouses continue to operate in the Rickenbacker area,
the new location supports the office space needs for continued growth in
Columbus, Los Angeles and St. Louis.
“Th is all began in January 2016 when we announced plans to double ODW
Logistics’ business by the year 2020,” said John Meier, Marketing Director of
ODW. “With the goal of creating the best logistics office in the Midwest, we
aim to retain and attract top talent to support our customers and national
warehouse and transportation locations.”

in in Central Ohio to the tune of $1.1 billion.
“Rickenbacker is one of the very few military bases to be successfully
converted into a joint use airport and that is due in no small part to
the people and businesses in the community who are committed to
the success of the Columbus Region,” said Elaine Roberts, President
& CEO of Columbus Regional Airport Authority which operates
Rickenbacker. “We are proud of our history at Rickenbacker and we
know that our staff and partner organizations in the community are
as excited as we are to contribute to the future growth and service
capabilities in the area.”
• Rickenbacker was named a permanent port of
embarkation for animals, with 129 horses, 202

• Foreign-Trade Zone #138 continued to thrive
with $7.8 billion worth of goods moving through
the zone in 2015, up 37 percent from the prior

All of the success of the last few years at Rickenbacker could not have been accomplished without
the strong support of our public and private partners in the logistics industry and local government.
We have no intention of becoming complacent. There are several potential projects on the horizon
and we look forward to another exciting year growing as your new global gateway.
Sincerely,
David Whitaker

For 30 years businesses have been saving
money and time with Foreign-Trade Zone #138
It has been 30 years since the establishment of Foreign-Trade Zone #138 at Rickenbacker
International Airport and there have been many successes worth celebrating. Serving a 25-country
area in Central Ohio, FTZ #138 has been ranked among the top 10 FTZs in the U.S. for the last three
years, a trend that is expected to continue as more retail and distribution centers become active users
in the zone.

2017 marks the 75th anniversary of Rickenbacker International
Airport, originally Lockbourne Army Air Base. And while the
landscape and operations of the airport have gone through
several changes in 75 years, there is still a significant and valuable
military presence in our own backyard. Similarly, the community’s
commitment to service and innovation is also ever-present
at Rickenbacker.

Ohio, Michigan and
Pennsylvania collaboration
aims to advance
transportation technology
Transportation agencies and academic organizations in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan have recently formed
the Smart Belt Coalition in an effort to collaborate on the advancement of autonomous vehicle technology.
Officials said their similar climates, commercial truck traffic
and active work on the technologies offer much common ground
and opportunities for cooperation. The coalition will support
research, testing, policy, funding pursuits and deployment.
They will also share data and provide opportunities for privatesector testers.
“I’m excited for us to continue our efforts in fostering safe and effective
development of this technology,” said Leslie S. Richards, Secretary
of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. “This multi-state
partnership not only offers fantastic collaboration opportunities, but
will also bring some consistency to testing scenarios that will help the
private sector as they develop these technologies.”
Only a few months ago Columbus won the fi rst ever Smart
City Challenge, a $50 million grant from the U.S. Department
of Transportation and Vulcan Inc. intended to help the
city become an intelligent transportation systems hub.
Th is partnership is another pivotal step in making smart
transportation technology more reliable and accessible.
