GREETINGS FROM THE
UKRAINIAN MUSEUM OF CANADA!
It has been some time since the Museum has published Museum News. We hope you will
see from the articles in this edition that we have been very busy in the last couple of
years. Many projects have been undertaken and many visitors have come through our
doors. We reach even more through social media on line. In the course of a year the
Museum’s press releases and posts reach tens of thousands of individuals. Whether or
not we reach people in person or through the unfathomable means of a computer, the
Ukrainian Museum of Canada in Saskatoon is a resource centre, an oasis, a sanctuary
and a sacred place of the very best that the Ukrainian Canadian community has to
offer. This is a museum for all people and it shines in all seasons.
Turn the pages and see what we have been doing!

This is a very significant anniversary year for the
Ukrainian Museum of Canada. It was established
eighty years ago in Saskatoon. The Museum is a
federally incorporated Not For Profit Corporation
which by its very definition does not have an
owner. Although it was founded by the Ukrainian
Women’s Association of Canada in 1936, since
its legal incorporation initiated by the U.W.A.C.
in 1975, the Ukrainian Museum of Canada of the
U.W.A.C., has been an independent and separate
legal entity as defined by federal legislation. This
was confirmed following extensive legal research
and confirmed by the Government of Canada
during the mandatory filing of Articles of
Continuance in compliance with the new Not For
Profit Act of October 2014. The Ukrainian
Museum of Canada is an entity onto itself and
autonomous. It is governed by a Board of Directors
and Administrated by a Director who is its Chief
Executive Officer.
Ensuring that the legacy of the numerous waves
of Ukrainian immigration to Canada is safe is a daily
quest of the employees of the Museum. Presenting
that story to the Museum’s visitors
is one of epic proportions and is an
obligation and responsibility that
we rise to every single day. We are
reminded of the importance of this
task by our visitors, by our
members,
volunteers,
media
agencies, organizations, museums,
galleries, politicians, and by the
global community. We serve the
general public and the many
individuals that we connect with
every day.

Museum News
As guardians of the collection of
memorabilia, clothing, artwork, documents,
library materials and photographs, we are
drawn to the interweaving of these
innumerable treasures, the connections that
they have to each other, the epic stories they
tell and the collective trust that has been
placed upon our shoulders to carry on in
spite of any challenges or obstacles that
might rise up in front of us. For the only real
obstacles are a lack of imagination and a lack
of will. At the end of the day, any
controversies
or
challenges
can
be
surmounted. We trust that you will like what
you see when you visit in what ever way
you can, be it by visiting in person, by
following the Museum on social media or by
visiting the Museum’s website. We hope that
we have done our visitors and founders
proud.

TREE OF LIFE FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN REPORT
Summer has arrived bringing new life to the world
around us. The Ukrainian Museum of Canada is
pleased to announce that the Tree of Life Fundraising
Campaign
has
raised
$735,799.24
towards
strengthening the roots and financial security of this
world class heritage institution.
The Museum’s next major plans are directed
toward modernization and enhancement of our main
permanent gallery, a tribute worthy of national pride.
The Gallery will continue to portray the beauty and
creativity of our culture and heritage. The
refurbishment of the gallery will demonstrate the
Museum’s mission which is dedicated to the
preservation of the legacy and gifts left to us by our
ancestors. The goal is to fulfill the Campaign’s aim
to provide a solid foundation for a new generation
of visitors and members.
Golden June, batik by Olha Tkachenko
Since launching its campaign in November 2011,
several notable projects have enhanced the Museum.
The gift shop has been renovated, allowing for
increased inventory and increased revenue; the
William Kurelek gallery has been enhanced with a
video presentation; the Museum collections continue
to be digitized; vibrant signage greets our visitors;
five exterior showcase windows (with the generous
financial assistance of the SUS Foundation of
Canada,) are now illuminated through the night
projecting details of the Museum’s Ukrainian Pioneer
Women collection of paintings by William Kurelek.
There are many more projects to complete and
dreams to realize.
One of the main goals of the Tree of Life Campaign
is a focus on Planned Giving – leaving a legacy to
future generations so that they too have the
opportunity to embrace and cherish the gifts that are
given to us in trust. The Spadshchyna Honour Roll was
established to recognize individuals who have left a
bequest for the Ukrainian Museum of Canada. This
is a way of acknowledging their generosity and
forward thinking. We invite you to do the same.
Please consider becoming a Spadshchyna member
when you do your estate planning. You are also
invited to consider donating to the Ukrainian Museum
of Canada in honour of birthdays, anniversaries, or
in memory of loved ones.

LONGTIME MUSEUM MEMBER CELEBRATES 100th BIRTHDAY
We are pleased to announce that long time Museum member and
Spadshchyna Honour Roll member, Bernice Mysak turned 100 years old on
May 16, 2016. Friends and family gathered with Bernice at Ilarion Residence
in Saskatoon to celebrate her life and to honour this very special woman. In
lieu of gifts or cards, Bernice and her family designated the Museum’s Tree
of Life campaign for donations to commemorate this extremely significant
and beautiful day.
Bernice spent her birthday the way she wanted to… surrounded by her
immediate and extended family. She was born to Joseph and Mary Ortynsky
on May 16, 1916 on the family farm near Verigan, Saskatchewan. She met
Walter Mysak, her future husband, while staying at Mohyla Institute. During
their married life, they were very active in their local congregations of the
Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada in both Buchanan and Canora. They
raised three children; Donna Dagnone, +David Mysak and Marlene Mysak.
Bernice is the founding President of the Buchanan UWAC. Bernice has been
a member of UWAC for 75 years and continues to be an active supporter of
the Ukrainian Museum of Canada.
She is blessed with six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one
step great grandson.
We invite other families and individuals to commemorate
special days and moments with a tribute and donation to the
Ukrainian Museum of Canada Tree of Life Campaign.

ROYAL CANADIAN MINT ISSUES ‘PYSANKA’ COIN
The Royal Canadian Mint released a special coin in February 2016 minted in honour
of the 125 th Anniversary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada. The popular and
iconic Ukrainian Easter Egg, the Pysanka was
chosen as a symbol of the legacy of this
settlement. This is the first coin ever minted in the
shape of an egg. It is 99.99% Pure Silver. Only
four thousand were released and they sold out
very quickly. The Ukrainian Museum of
Canada, Saskatoon provided the historical
background and research information regarding
colours and symbols that were chosen for this
project. The title of “expert vetter” was assigned
to the Ukrainian Museum of Canada for the
assistance given to the Mint for this very special
venture.
WHAT DO OUR VISITORS HAVE TO SAY?
The Ukrainian Museum of Canada has welcomed
many guests from all four corners of the world in the
past year. Visitors from South Africa, Malaysia,
Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, Germany, South
Korea, Japan, Egypt, Australia, Mexico, Peru, Poland,
Russia, Iraq, Nepal, Somalia, England, Croatia,
Canada, Ukraine and the United States have enjoyed
our galleries and gift shop. Many guests tell us that
they heard about the Ukrainian Museum of Canada
on an internet site called Trip Advisor. The Museum
is listed as one of the “Top Ten Things to Do in
Saskatoon” on this site. Our visitors have given the
Museum a very impressive 4.5 out of a possible 5 stars
for their experience. These are some reviews of the
Museum that were posted by them on Trip Advisor:
“We thought we would pop in on the way past.
Surprisingly good and very interesting to learn
about Ukrainian settlers.”
“Mystery of the Eastern Culture and church”
This is one place that I will always want to go to
if there is an opportunity. The museum speaks so
loud of culture, customs and tradition. Their
exhibits show how
delicate they value
little things. The
handicraft, the
icons, the Easter
eggs designed
intricately as if very
tiny hands made
them. I want to go
to visit our heritage.

I am not from this culture and that’s what made
me want to find out more about Ukrainian
heritage. This great museum on Spadina Cres in
Saskatoon embodies the culture for the past 100
years and allows easy to follow flow of the
exhibits. The staff were excited to meet all who
enter and where very helpful in providing specific
detail to questions on the culture of Ukraine. I
spend over two hours touring the exhibits and
learning all about Easter eggs and the art of
decorating them, but more importantly the
religious heritage behind the Easter eggs. I want
to come back just to make myself...
“Awesome museum”
I had time to kill so I thought I’d pop in. Wow,
was I surprised. I never knew about the Ukrainian
history of Saskatchewan. I was amazed at the
displays. The workers were knowledgeable and
friendly. I’m glad I stopped by.
In the June issue of West Jet’s in flight magazine, the
Museum was mentioned in the cover feature about
Saskatoon.

THE MUSEUM and SOCIAL MEDIA
With the global explosion of social media access and
users, the Ukrainian Museum of Canada has firmly
placed itself in this arena. Connections have been
made that even a decade ago were unimaginable. The
Museum has over 2,000 regular followers on Twitter,
Facebook and Instagram with the numbers
increasingly dramatically every month. A posting of
an antique map from the Museum’s collection on
Facebook with a discussion regarding the use of the
article “the” in reference to Ukraine brought
approximately three thousand “likes” as responses or
reactions are called. A “Tweet” during International
Museum Week on Twitter of William Kurelek’s
painting entitled Second Home from the Museum’s
collection, brought over ten thousand views. These
statistics are indicative of the value, respect and
recognition that the Ukrainian Museum of Canada
receives on the international stage. The seemingly
limitless reach of this electronic communication is a
constant source of amazement. Shown are some of
our most popular social media posts.
The Museum continues to receive unprecedented
traditional media coverage throughout the year with
numerous feature articles, and photographs published
in the Saskatoon Star Phoenix, the Regina Leader Post,
the Winnipeg Free Press, Flow Magazine, Planet S,
Saskatoon Express, West Jet In Flight and Bridges.
Internet Travel sites including Trip Advisor and
Expedia.com place the Ukrainian Museum of Canada
highly on their lists of “Things to Do in Saskatoon”.
Articles can be found in these publications on
numerous topics including travel, the arts, religion,
heritage and spirituality.

RECENT ACQUISITIONS
The Museum was recently gifted two very significant
artifacts by Anna Trojan and her late husband Dr.
Oleh Alexander Trojan. One is a rushnyk, a ritual
cloth, woven in 1968 by awarded artist of Ukraine
from Kosiv in Karpaty, Western Ukraine, Hanna
Vaylashchuk. Anna Vasylashchuk created her own
system of patterns to illustrate Taras Shevchenko’s
major poems in KOBZAR. This rushnyk illustrates
with eleven colourful stripes the words of the poem
‘Äî Îñíîâ’ÿíåíêà’. The second and tenth stripes
represent the bandura referenced in the poem.
A copy of KOBZAR , published in Kyiv in 1971
with illustrated pictures of Vasylashchuk’s woven
rushnyky was also donated by the Trojans. The
rushnyk that was donated to the Ukrainian Museum
of Canada is found on page 224.
The Museum Library was the recipient of a
recently published book; Ïèñàíêó Ïîäiëëÿ
(Podillian Pysanky) donated by Museum member
Leonard Krawchuk and the author Maryna Verkhova.
One of the finest books and resources to come out
on the art of writing pysanky, it is a welcome addition
to the museum’s library.

FEATURED ARTIFACT
The Museum’s artifact collection is extremely diverse.
Many items feature elaborate designs, vibrant colors
and unique patterns. However, there are also a few
artifacts that tell an amazing story of a person, family
or even the whole generation. One of such artifacts
was acquired by the museum in 1949. It is half of a
plakhta, a wrap skirt worn by women of Central,
Eastern and Southern Ukraine.
The story of this plakhta begins in 1902 when its
original owner, Varvara Kozachyk, asked her relatives
to find one for her in the town of Krolevets (now
Sumy region, Ukraine). They bought it directly from
the maker, and it cost Varvara three silver rubles.
Although this was the time when many young girls
were opting for factory-made skirts, Varvara preferred
the traditional clothing and would often wear it as a
part of her national costume. After she got married,
this plakha was reused as a wall hanging, evidence
of which is still present in a form of loops attached
to one side of it.
Nothing is known about the life of Mrs. Kozachyk
during the next two decades, but at the end of the
WWII she was in Germany. Having survived
bombing of Berlin she lost most of her possessions
in a fire. One of the few items remaining was the
plakhta. Mrs. Kozachyk didn’t consider it valuable
enough to be stored with the rest of her praised
clothing items and made a sack from it to carry her
belongings. In May 1945, she was one of three
million Ukrainians displaced by the war living in
Displaced Persons Camps. At the same time the
Ukrainian Canadian Relief Fund was created in
Winnipeg to aid refugees in Europe.
The Ukrainian Women’s Association was one of
the major contributors to the Fund. The organization
collected monetary donations, sent books and
newspapers and answered numerous letters. One of
the biggest contributions of the organization was the
purchasing of more than one hundred CARE
packages, which contained the most essential food
items such as margarine, sugar, bacon and coffee,
and distributing them among those Ukrainians in dire
need. One of the recipients was Varvara Kozachyk,
and she expressed her gratitude by sending her only
plakhta that survived the war to the U.W.A.C.
This is how the remnant of plakhta was acquired
by the museum. We don’t know if Mrs. Kozachyk
stayed in Europe, emigrated or like many others was
sent back to the Soviet Union, but her precious gift
remains at the museum as an evidence of the time of
great turmoil, human empathy and unbreakable spirit.

WAX and COLOURS: A SAGA ABOUT HOME
Showing until July 31, in the Feature Gallery is Wax and Colours:
A Saga about Home works in batik by Olha Tkachenko.
An exploration of colour and interaction with texture and
form is central to Tkachenko’s work. Batik, one of the artist’s
favourite techniques, a method of painting and applying hot
wax and dyes, interprets this interaction well. This wax resist
technique is very similar to the Ukrainian method of writing a
Pysanka, the beloved Ukrainian Easter Egg.
Olha has dedicated this exhibition to her Ukrainian homeland
and honours the country’s rich culture and aesthetic traditions
in addition to all of its beauty and pain. It is an exhibition and
an exploration of reaching our real and eternal home, a pursuit
that lives in every heart. The viewer is encouraged to explore
this eternal quest with the artist and to meditate on their own
journey of discovery.

Priests of Maidan
Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Olha Tkachenko as a full-time employee with the
Ukrainian Museum of Canada. Olha joined our staff in June 2015 in the position of
Curatorial and Programming Assistant.
Born in Ukraine, Olha grew up in a family of artists where she studied drawing and painting at
home. She also received a formal education in Fine Art and Christian theology. Now living in
Saskatoon with her family, Olha passionately continues to create with various media as an artist and
book illustrator, also sharing her talents by teaching young children in her art studio.

Due to popular demand, the Ukrainian Museum of Canada will feature an exhibition of
paintings, woodcuts and other artwork that have not previously been shown in the
Museum’s gallery. These will be items that were not shown during the Treasures from

preview of an art show or exhibition not usually shown to the public. Promising to be
an interesting exhibition with treasures not often seen, make sure to visit the museum
this summer from August 9 to September 10, 2016 to see this unique show.

MUSEUM UNVEILS WILLIAM KURELEK WINDOW PROJECT
In celebration of the 125 th Anniversary of Ukrainian
settlement in Canada, the Ukrainian Museum of
Canada with the generous financial support of the
SUS Foundation of Canada, has unveiled five images
featuring the original artwork of William Kurelek
found in the collection of the Ukrainian Museum of
Canada. The first window shows A Boorday – The
First House followed by The Second House, Blessing
the Easter Paska, Women Feeding the Threshing Gang
and Ukrainian Canadian Farm Picnic. This series of
windows, which are illuminated after dark depicts in
the form of visual masterpieces, the important steps
Ukrainian people went through in establishing a life
in Canada. From the establishment of a temporary
shelter and clearing the land, to the building of a
permanent home and planting a garden, to the
building of churches and a place to worship, to the
celebration and coming together of community at a
picnic to the importance of agriculture and the
changing of the seasons and harvest rituals, Kurelek’s
work shows the importance of faith, family and work
in the lives of Ukrainian Canadians.
This project has brought artwork to the general
public, museum visitors and all those walking,
driving or biking down Spadina Crescent past the
Museum on a highly visible and well traveled route.
The Ukrainian Museum of Canada gratefully
acknowledges the SUS Foundation of Canada for its
financial support and encouragement of the William
Kurelek Window Project and for its support of the
enhancements to the William Kurelek Special Gallery
and the second edition of the Gallery Guide.

BEHIND THE SCENES
The Ukrainian Museum of Canada presents a diverse,
vibrant, and constantly evolving presence in the Canadian,
Ukrainian and global heritage, arts and cultural scene.
Exhibition changes, gift shop purchasing, donor attention
and receipting, documentation of artifacts, collections
research and digitization, grant applications, design of
promotional materials, gallery and gift shop display
changes, product development,
newsletter preparation,
event planning and staging, participation in local, provincial,
national and international issues and events, facility
maintenance and infrastructure issues, are but a few of the
projects that the employees are involved in on a regular
basis. This could not happen without the loyalty, dedication,
creativity and work ethic of the Museum’s employees. Often,
the work is done behind the scenes and sometimes,
volunteers generously offer us their time and assistance in
the many facets of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada.

DONATIONS • ÏÎÆÅÐÒÂÈ
The Board of Directors and staff of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada thank the many donors who
have supported the UMC. We are a non-profit organization dependent on membership and admission
fees, gift shop revenue, financial support, bequests and the donation of artifacts. Ongoing financial
support ensures that we are able to continue to offer exhibits and programming that our community
and visitors have come to expect. No donation is too small or too big - they are all graciously welcomed!
Thank-you for your thoughtfulness and generosity!

TREE of LIFE CAMPAIGN
The Tree of Life Campaign (ToL) was
launched in 2012 as a way to connect past,
present and future generations of our
Museum family and to ensure financial
sustainability. This Campaign addresses
immediate operational needs as well as
planned gifts and bequests.

YOU CAN LEAVE A LEGACY
- JOIN THE SPADSHCHYNA HONOUR ROLL When it comes time to planning your estate, please remember the Ukrainian Museum of Canada.
There are several ways to do so. You may want the Museum to receive all or part of what is left from your estate after debts, taxes,
administrative expenses and other bequests have been paid. A bequest can be a fixed dollar amount, or a percentage of your
total estate or you could leave the residue of your estate to the Museum.
When you make a bequest to the Ukrainian Museum of Canada your estate will receive a charitable tax receipt and may claim
up to a maximum of 100% of income in the year of your death. Whether it is a fixed dollar amount, a percentage of your estate
or the residue of your estate, we will ensure your charitable wishes for the Museum are realized.
Suggested bequest wording follows:
I give and bequeath the sum of $__________ to the Ukrainian
Museum of Canada of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada.
I give and bequeath ____% of my estate to the Ukrainian
Museum of Canada of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada.
I give and bequeath the residue of my estate remaining to the
Ukrainian Museum of Canada of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada.
To receive more information, please contact your personal financial advisor, lawyer, or call the Museum at 306-244-3800 to
speak with the Director, Janet Prebushewsky Danyliuk ([email protected]); or, Business Manager, Sylvia Baran
