Tairua Harbour and Catchment
Management Plan
Harbour and catchment management planning is an integrated
approach to management of natural resources in a geographic
area and protection of associated community values. The
commencement of the Tairua Harbour and Catchment
Management Plan has been well supported by the communities
and stakeholders that have a connection there. The success of
this plan now relies on the continued partnership between the
Waikato Regional Council and those with an interest in this
catchment to ensure agreements and works are instigated.
A newsletter is due to be mailed either December or late January
providing an update on the Management Plan from Waikato
Regional Council.
Community Grants
Community Grants were distributed to a number of groups/
organisations within the Tairua, Pauanui and Hikuai
communities again this year.
At its 29 June meeting Council passed a resolution to retain
the Boat Launching and Amenity Permit scheme at the
Whangamata and Sugarloaf, Coromandel boat ramps only.
It revoked operation of the scheme at all other Council
owned and/or operated boat ramps and agreed to include
this proposal in its draft 2012-2022 Ten Year Plan.

Tairua Holiday
Park
At its 8 February 2010 meeting
the Community Board
supported leasing a smaller
portion of the Tairua Holiday
Park site on completion of the
service lane improvements and
car park. This was achieved in
August 2011 with a lease being
signed with a new operator and
the camp ground was reopened
in time for the Rugby World Cup.
Tsunami warning system
Pauanui Airfield
A tsunami warning system has recently been
installed in Tairua and Pauanui and was
successfully tested in September. The system
consists of sirens mounted at Ocean Beach Road,
Tairua, Vista Paku, Pauanui Boulevard, Beaumont
Green, Pauanui and modified fire service sirens. A
tsunami warning siren will sound continuously in
one tone.
Richard and Cathy Jellyman were appointed as custodians to manage
the operation of the Pauanui airfield from 1 July 2011.
As a timely reminder copies of the ‘Tsunami
Action Plans’ for both Tairua and Pauanui have
been updated and are available from Information
Centres or by calling customer services at Council.

The high demand for water during the peak period

physically how much water is available in
our rivers, streams and groundwater sources,
Waikato Regional Council resource consent limits,
treatment capacity and storage volume.
Tune in to your local radio station for water
restrictions or visit our website under ‘summer

To report water leaks or offences during water
restrictions, contact the Council.
