Dear Redmond Middle School Community: This letter is to inform you that for the second year in a row, there will be a service dog on our campus during the school day throughout the year. This service dog, under the supervision of an adult handler, is trained to recognize and perform tasks for the benefit of our student. Service dogs are recognized as a reasonable accommodation under Title II of the ADA federal regulations and are allowed in public settings, including schools. There are and have been other service dogs at work in the Lake Washington School District. The name of the service dog working at our school is Curly, and he is a yellow Labrador Retriever. He gets to go everywhere with his student so he can help if needed. We will all see Curly at assemblies and at lunch as well as in some classrooms. When Curly is working, we do not interrupt him from his work, by trying to pet him or call out his name, even though he is really cute! Curly has had extensive training in manners and obedience as a puppy and then advanced training in how to work with his student. He even knows how to find his student if he ever got lost. Curly lives with his student and his family. The family has learned how to command him to use his skills to help his student effectively. There will always be an adult handler around to make sure Curly knows when to go into action, and Curly will always follow the directions from his handler. If your student has an identified allergy to dogs, please email or call me directly ASAP. My contact information is at the bottom of this letter. Additionally, if your student is afraid of animals, please note that Curly will only be with his student and handler and will not have direct contact with other students. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding. Sincerely, Kelly A. Clapp, Principal 425-936-2442 [email protected]
