Borneo
About the country
The island is divided among three countries: Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Approximately 73% of the island is Indonesian territory. The Malaysian states of
Sabah and Sarawak in the north occupy about 26% of the island. The sovereign
state of Brunei, located on the north coast, comprises about 1% of Borneo's
land area. Borneo is home to one of the oldest rainforests in the world, along
with the Daintree Rainforest in Australia and the Amazon. Borneo is surrounded
by the South China Sea to the north and northwest, the Sulu Sea to the
northeast, the Celebes Sea and the Makassar Strait to the east, and the Java
Sea and Karimata Strait to the south. Borneo's highest point is Mount Kinabalu.

Borneo and specifically the island of Sipadan is known as one of the world’s top
dive sites. Your team could learn to dive and gain a PADI open water
qualification.
Expedition Programmes
For groups wanting a significant challenge, an ascent of Mt Kinabalu in the Kota
Kinabalu national park is a must. The mountain towers above the rainforest, to
reach it you must trek through pristine forest with an abundance of creepers
ferns orchids butterflies and birds. Heading into the jungle to learn the local
skills and experience life living in the jungle is an experience not to be missed.

Fieldtreks to Borneo will be spoilt by the vast diversity of wildlife and plant life to
encounter. A visit to the Orang-utan Sanctuary at Sepilok will give pupils the
opportunity to learn about the habits of these incredible mammals as well as to
contribute to their conservation. Pupils can then head into the jungle, along the
Kinabatangan River which is home to rare species of bird and the enigmatic
proboscis monkey.
