AQUASTOP by VENEZIANI An effective cure against osmosis Leaders in yacht paint systems www.venezianiyacht.it AQUASTOP by VENEZIANI An effective cure against osmosis. This brochure should help you to understand what osmosis is and inform you that it is possible to prevent or repair osmosis by using a specific protection system which must be applied very accurately. Osmosis develops in a very deceitful way and its most evident effects (blisters) appear only when the disease is already in an advanced stage. To prevent or cure osmosis, Veneziani has formulated a specific product: Aquastop. The preventive treatment of osmosis, which practically creates an additional protective skin on top of the Gel-coat, should be applied to new boats or to boats which have not yet been affected by osmosis. Especially in the latter case, one must make sure, by means of a special humidity gauge, not to entrap humidity inside of the protective barrier. Entrapped water molecules could result in high pressure against the protective barrier und cause micro-crevices and therefore water absorption. It is better to carry out this humidity check also in the case when one suspects that during the anti-osmosis treatment of the boat’s hull the gel-coat has been sanded too deeply. You can carry out the procedures of this manual by yourself or contact a professional boatyard, which is advisable especially in the case of osmosis repair. In the latter case, this brochure will be useful to compare our procedure whit the work carried out. The inside of the mould is coated with anti-adhesion wax. At first, the gel-coat, corresponding to the outside layer of the hull, is applied. The gel-coat consists of a polyester resin containing pigments with the desired colour. Several layers are applied with spray equipment. Subsequently, several layers of fiberglass mats are applied. Each layer is impregnated with catalysed polyester resin. After completion of the curing period, the hull is removed from the mould. Osmosis is a phenomenon which becomes visible through the formation of blisters. The blisters are filled with water and localized between the layers of resin in the hull. In the beginning, the blisters are small in size and restricted to a few areas of the hull. When the phenomenon is progressing, the blister’s size increases and eventually the whole area of the hull is affected. The main cause of osmosis is capillarity which enables water molecules to penetrate into the fiberglass laminate of the hull. Once inside, the water reacts with the residual acidic compounds in the laminate creating a concentrated solution. More water is absorbed to balan- Gel-coat with air bubbles ce the concentration of the solution trapped inside the laminate (through osmotic pressure). This causes the formation of the well known blisters. Causes of osmosis The main causes of osmosis formation are the following: • Residues of non polymerized resin • Water soluble contaminants in the laminate • Micro-porosities in the gel-coat or in the fiberglass mats due to air entrapment during the manufacturing process. Cavities between gel-coat and laminate GRP SEA WATER Manufacturing resin Cross-section of a hull showing air entrapment in the gel-coat, cavities and non polymerized resin due to manufacturing defects or excessive sanding of the gel-coat in the past. Non polymerized manufacturing resin Air cavity Deterioration of osmosis due to an increase of internal concentrations and to water absorption from the outside, which causes blistering. Damaged surface to be removed 2 1 Phases of blistering The osmotic blistering on boat hulls can be divided into five different phases. If you study the drawing shown here below and compare it with the conditions of your boat’s hull, it might be possible to carry out a preventive action suitable to avoid severe damage caused by osmosis. 1) Formation of air blisters, often of small size, in the Gel Coat. 2) Take up of water in the blisters Formation of blisters 1 Air blisters 2 Water take up caused by the permeability of the Gel Coat. 3) Hydrolysis of the gel-coat resin as well as of the laminate resin and formation of a concentrated solution. 4) Increase of the blister size due to osmotic pressure. 5) Cracking of blister, caused by the increasing pressure in the blisters. It is of paramount importance to choose the right materials for any repair work. In the diagram shown 3 Formation of blisters 4 Increase of blisters below the effectiveness of different materials used in boat building is indicated. 5 Cracking of Gel Coat 3 1 How to recognize osmosis After each boating season it is advisable to check the hull of your boat. When the boat has been hauled out of water, pressure wash the hull with fresh water and inspect it carefully. There are blisters and blisters. Some blisters occur for reasons other than osmosis. Old layers of antifoulings which are porous and delaminating can cause blistering. Blisters originating from osmosis are easy to recognize for their characteristic dome shape, because they are hard to cut open and because they contain a liquid with a strong vinegar smell. If you are concerned that the hull is affected by osmosis, remove the antifouling in 6 spots of the hull, 3 on each side, at the center, the stern and the bow. For each spot an area of 10 X 10 cm is sufficient. Measure the humidity content in the hull with a suitable humidity gauge. If the hull is affected by osmosis, the humidity content will be significantly higher than 10%. 4 OSMOSIS HUMIDITY GAUGES The dielectric constant of water is 75 times higher than that of air and significantly higher than that of boat building materials. This property makes it easy to measure the humidity content of GRP laminates with a suitable humidity gauge. PROPERTIES OF HUMIDITY GAUGES Fast scanning of large areas. Non destructive testing. Unaffected by soluble salts. BOAT HULL INSPECTION Water adsorption by boat building materials is a source of problems, which become visible when the well known blistering on boat hulls made of GRP occurs. Humidity gauges have a pad sensor suitable for fast and safe measuring of the humidity content. A humidity check of the boat hull can safe a lot of time and money if performed prior to carry out any kind of osmosis treatment. Veneziani recommends not to carry out any treatment as long as the humidity content of the hull is higher than 10-12%. A humidity gauge with pad sensor. ATTENTION: ALWAYS APPLY THE RECOMMENDED QUANTITY OF AQUASTOP! The barrier effect of AQUASTOP in the osmosis REPAIR SYSTEMI In the case of new boats, the gel-coat acts as an waterproof barrier. When osmosis occurs, the gel-coat must be removed completely and replaced with an Aquastop coating of at least 600 microns. ATTENTION. On the market you can find sometimes glass laminates of poor quality, which may affect the performance of the AQUASTOP system. In this case we recommend to apply an additional coat of AQUASTOP with brush as a sealer, prior to the application the repair system of 600 microns. REMARK. It is of outmost importance to comply with the thickness specified by Veneziani. You can check the thickness as follows: Measure the thickness during application with a wet thickness gauge. Or Apply, independently from the number of coats and the application method, the recommended liters, using the theoretical coverage of AQUASTOP for the calculation: 5m2/L. Example. For a hull of 30 m 2 you need 6,6 L of AQUASTOP per coat with a total consumption of about 20 L for the whole repair system. 2 APPLICATION Aquastop by Veneziani Aquastop consists of a solventfree mixture of epoxy resins, with the following features: • Very high impermeability • High thickness (can be applied at 200 microns per coat without sagging) Aquastop provides excellent protection against osmosis both as a preventive treatment for new boats and as a repair treatment for damaged boats. If a boat has been damaged by osmosis, the best advise is to contact one of the Veneziani Specialized Application Centers. Our Main Technical Department is at your disposal for information and advice. Aquastop has been formulated with a tinting pigment. After application it shows a clear light blue color. This coloration is useful during painting to understand how much product is being applied: the higher the thickness, the AQUASTOP Barrier coat for anti-osmosis protection CHARACTERISTICS Aquastop is a barrier coat with high impermeability designed specifically for the treatment of GRP boat hulls affected by osmosis as well as for preventive treatment against osmosis. This product is resistant against fresh and sea water and provides also an effective corrosion protection for submerged metal parts (keels, flaps, rudders, etc.). 6 darker the color. Aquastop should be applied within a temperature range of 15° to 35° C and at a relative humidity below 70%. If during the drying period there is an abrupt change of climatic condition, this may cause the formation of a sticky layer (amine blushing), which is easy to remove with water and an abrasive sponge. Wait until dry before resuming the application of the coating system. If the 48 hours of maximum recoat time are exceeded, the last coat must be properly sanded before recoating. Also a new boat’s hull may have structural defects non visible by naked eyes, such as air bubbles or contaminants, and preventing is much cheaper and less time consuming then repairing. 1 Degrease the gel-coat carefully until you are sure to have removed all traces of anti-adhesion waxes left over from the manufacturing process. We recommend to use abrasive sponges and DETERSIL, a specific detergent from Veneziani. 2 Wash down with fresh water. Dry sandpaper with 120 - 180 grade abrasive paper or wet sandpaper with 240 - 320 grade abrasive paper. 3 Apply 2 coats of AQUASTOP with brush or short pile roller. The recoating interval is 16 hours minimum and 48 hours maximum. The theoretical coverage is 5 m2/L per coat and the total DFT 400 microns. 4 We recommend to wait at least 72 hours before applying the subsequent coat of ADHERGLASS or ADHERPOX in order obtain proper chemical curing of AQUASTOP and ensure a better impermeability. ADHERGLASS: Apply 1 coat of by brush at a thickness of 15 microns and a theoretical coverage of 13,3 m2/L. Minimum recoating time: 6 hours at 20° C. 2 ADHERPOX: Apply 1 coat of by brush, roller or spraying at a thickness of 100 microns and a theoretical coverage of 6 m2/L. Minimum recoating time: 10 hours at 20°C; maximum: 3 months if recoated with antifouling unlimited if recoated with itself. 5 Apply 2 coats of ANTIFOULING. For the right choice of antifouling please consult the brochure “Painting your Boat” by Veneziani. 7 2 APPLICATION Preventive system with one-pack primer HULL 2 coats of AQUASTOP. Recoat time 16 hours (DFT 200 microns per coat, theoretical coverage 5 m2/L). After 72 hours: 1 coat of ADHERGLASS (DFT 15 microns per coat, theoretical coverage 13,3 m2/L). After 6 hours: 2 of ANTIFOULING (DFT and theoretical coverage depending on the type of antifouling). Attention! If the maximum recoat time has expired, it is necessary to sand before the application of the next coat. Apply to bare Gel Coat WE RECOMMEND to launch the boat at least one week after the application of the last coat of Aquastop and within 2 months. 8 2 Preventive system with two-pack primer HULL 2 coats of AQUASTOP. Recoat time 16 hours (DFT 200 microns per coat, theoretical coverage 5 m2/L). After 72 hours: 1 coat of ADHERPOX (DFT 100 microns per coat, theoretical coverage 6 m2/L). After 10 hours: 2 of ANTIFOULING (DFT and theoretical coverage depending on the type of antifouling). Attention! If the maximum recoat time has expired, it is necessary to sand before the application of the next coat. Apply to bare Gel Coat REMARK: pin the case of sailboats with keel the same osmosis preventive system can be applied to the bare metal after suitable surface preparation and after application of 1 coat of EPOXY PRIMER, thickness 40 microns; theoretical coverage 10,5 m2/L. For the right choice of antifouling please request the brochure “Painting your Boat” by Veneziani. 9 2 Repair system 1 Removal of all damaged layers (Gel Coat and if necessary also damaged layers of GRP) by means of grit-blasting or hydroblasting. Both procedures are effective. 2 Chiseling by means of flat chisel and rubber hammer, a procedure to use in case of very deep osmosis. After the drying (curing) period possible protruding glass fibers must be removed by means of disc sanding. 3 Disc-sanding with rotary or orbital disc sanders, using a 36 grade semi-rigid abrasive disc. This procedure replaces grit-blasting in the case of superficial osmosis, when removal the Gel Coat layer is sufficient. APPLICATION Curing periods may var y from 2 months minimum to a maximum of 6 months. In order to verify the completion of the curing and the dr ying progress, the humidity content should be checked once a week and the results and dates marked with a felt pen on the most critical hull areas. Often there is a color change in the laminate from yellow to a white tint when the dr ying is progressing. During the curing period the washing down of the hull must be repeated at least 3 times, in order to make sure that all bleeding liquid shall be eliminated. It may be necessar y to open the laminate in suspect areas by means of a chisel or a disc sander. The hull can be considered dried out when the measured humidity content is below 10%. 4 Smoothing with an elliptical planing machine (outfitted with heat-resistant blades) and subsequent disc sanding with rotary or orbital disc sanders. After a drying interval of 16 hours minimum and 48 hours maximum (at 20°C), level all imperfections with the filler EPOMAST PRO or EPOMAST. EPOMAST PRO should be preferred for lager areas because of its low specific weight. For touch-up filling EPOMAST should be used because of its fine grain and easy application or use EPOMAST RAPIDO when short drying times for sanding are required (3-4 hours). Cleaning with DETERSIL and repeated rinsing with fresh water, in order to eliminate all bleeding of acidic solution from the fiberglass laminate which could affect the outcome of the repair work. 10 Application of 1 coat of AQUASTOP with brush, after mixing of components A + B, taking care to soak all deeper cavities and using vertical and longitudinal cross strokes. The thickness must be 200 microns with a theoretical coverage of 5 m2/L. 7 5 After wards the curing period begins, during which the boat should be stored outside with a plastic sheet protection from the waterline down. If the boat is stored inside a shed, proper ventilation and humidity control is needed. Ar tificial means such as air dr yers, dehumidifiers or heaters are not always effective. 6 The humidity measurements should be carried out dividing the hull into 8 areas and making 4 measures for each side. When all damaged layers have been removed and the curing has been completed by reaching a humidity content below 10%, the coating application can start. 9 Application of 2 coats AQUASTOP with brush, short pile roller or foam roller. 10 2 Application with brush of 1 coat of ADHERGLASS, at about 15 microns and a theoretical coverage of 13,3 m2/L. Minimum recoating interval before antifouling: 6 hours at 20° C. If using a foam roller, replace it every 20 minutes since then it becomes too soft. Or application with brush of 1 coat of ADHERPOX, at about 100 microns and a theoretical coverage of 6 m2/L. Minimum recoating interval before antifouling: 10 hours at 20°C. 11 If 48 hours drying time are exceeded, sand the surface before filler application. 8 Sanding of the whole hull with 60 grade abrasive paper. If using a brush, apply with longitudinal strokes. The minimum total thickness must be at least 400 microns. The recoating interval between coats is 16 to 48 hours at 20°C. Application of 2 coats of ANTIFOULING. For the right choice of antifouling please consult the brochure “Maintaining your Boat” by Veneziani. The minimum recoating interval between the second coat of AQUASTOP and the coat of ADHERGLASS should be at least 72 hours in order to obtain proper chemical curing and best impermeability. 11 2 APPLICATION Repair system with one-pack primer HULL 1 coat of AQUASTOP. Apply to GRP after removal of Gel Coat After 10 hours: 2 coats of ANTIFOULING (DFT and theoretical coverage depending on the type of antifouling). Attention! If the maximum recoat time has expired, it is necessary to sand before the application of the next coat. The only way to repair a hull affected by osmosis is to remove completely the Gel Coat as well as all deeper layers affected by the osmosis phenomenon. If the osmosis is widespread, it would be useless to repair single blisters since very likely there has already been water absorption in the apparently non affected areas too. The application of the repair system is a very difficult procedure. Therefore we recommend you to contact the Veneziani Main Technical Department, which will inform you about an AQUASTOP CENTER as close as possible to your location. 13 2 APPLICATION Frequently asked questions ?
